Can reading disabilities be diagnosed without using intelligence tests?

Unlike conventional procedures, which use IQ in making diagnostic and eligibility decisions regarding learning disabilities, this demonstration study used listening comprehension and other reading-related tasks to make a differential diagnosis of reading disabilities. Tests of listening and reading comprehension were administered to 180 children from Grades 3 through 8. A regression equation was then derived to predict reading comprehension from listening comprehension. The regression equation was applied to the listening comprehension scores of seven children from Grades 3 to 8 who had readin

Oronasal fistulae in repaired cleft palates.

The study reviews oronasal fistulae occurring after palatoplasty. Subjects were fifty-two patients who had received palatoplasty in our clinic from 1981 to 1987. In twenty-one cases (40%) oronasal fistulae persisted. Two-thirds of these fistulae were slits or pinholes. The ratio of fistula occurrence was relatively high compared to other reports. Most of them were observed at the junction of the premaxilla and maxilla. There was no significant difference between fistula formation and the distance of the push back, and also there was no correlation with the width of the cleft.

Efficacy of speech therapy in children with language disorders: specific language impairment compared with language impairment in comorbidity with cognitive delay.

OBJECTIVE: this article discusses the effect of speech therapy on language comprehension, language production and non-verbal functioning in two groups of children with developmental language disorders. DESIGN: retrospective study-a follow-up after a mean of 2 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: verbal and non-verbal functioning before and after therapy were examined in 31 language-impaired children with normal hearing and good health. In 16 children the language functioning was substantial behind their non-verbal functioning. They were categorised as children with specific language impairment (SLI

Normal adult aging and the contextual influences affecting speech and meaningful sound perception.

It is widely accepted that hearing loss increases markedly with age, beginning in the fourth decade ISO 7029 (2000). Age-related hearing loss is typified by high-frequency threshold elevation and associated reductions in speech perception because speech sounds, especially consonants, become inaudible. Nevertheless, older adults often report additional and progressive difficulties in the perception and comprehension of speech, often highlighted in adverse listening conditions that exceed those reported by younger adults with a similar degree of high-frequency hearing loss (Dubno, Dirks, & Morga

The nance obturator, a new fixed obturator for patients with cleft palate and fistula.

In patients with fistulas that impair function (e.g., feeding, resonance, intelligibility), obturators are used to improve feeding and reduce nasal air emission by occluding the abnormal opening between the oral and nasal cavities. This report describes a novel method for occluding an anterior palatal fistula in patients with cleft palates. The new design for a fixed obturator is based on the Nance appliance, which was originally used as a space maintainer, but has been redesigned for closing an anterior palatal fistula in a patient with cleft lip and palate. The Nance obturator may be used wh

Vocal folds disorder detection using pattern recognition methods.

Diagnosis of pathological voice is one of the most important issues in biomedical applications of speech technology. This study focuses on the classification of pathological voice using the HMM(Hidden Markov Model), the GMM(Gaussian Mixture Model) and a SVM (Support Vector Machine), and then compares the results to work done previously using an ANN (Artificial Neural Network). Speech data were collected from those without and those with vocal disorders. Normal and pathological speech data were mixed in out experiment. Six characteristic parameters (Jitter, Shimmer, NHR, SPI, APQ and RAP) were

[Surgical voice rehabilitation after laryngectomy by a modification of the Asai procedure].

A new technique of primary neoglottic reconstruction for surgical restoration of voice following total laryngectomy is described in detail. The procedure is based on the principle of Asai's technique, but can be performed as a one-step procedure. Within the last 2 years, the technique has been used in 20 patients with T2-T4 tumors without subglottic extensions and without extensive infiltration of the hypopharyngeal mucosa. The mean period of observation was 14.2 +/- 5.5 months. In two patients the speech fistula had to be removed because of aspiration problems, while six patients required dil

Follow-up study of a right- and a left-hemispherectomized child: implications for localization and impairment of language in children.

Two hemispherectomized girls, one operated on the right, the other on the left, were followed from time of surgery until 9 and 10 years of age and compared with respect to course of language acquisition following surgery. At conclusion of follow-up, receptive and expressive language, phoneme perception and production, and sentence processing of the two hemispherectomized children were compared with those of two control groups of similar age, one developing language normally, the other language-impaired. The left-hemispherectomized child's abilities were similar to those of the language-impaire

Defining Language Profiles in Young Autistic Children Across Verbal, Speaking, and Generative Dimensions.

Language trajectories in autism are highly heterogeneous and cannot be captured by unidimensional classifications. Research and clinical practice often rely on verbal/non-verbal or speaking/non-speaking labels, but these categories, when used in isolation, obscure distinct linguistic profiles. Spoken language is also frequently used as a proxy for structural language skills, despite evidence that speech may not be generative or productive. A multidimensional perspective is therefore needed to determine whether verbal skills, spoken output, and linguistic generativity reflect dissociable aspect

Verbal auditory agnosia in children.

Four (possibly five) boys are described with a profound comprehension deficit for acoustic language, leading to severe or complete abolition of expressive speech. One boy had presumed megalencephaly from birth but was of superior intelligence. He had a severe articulation deficit from early childhood, with delayed acquisition of speech. Another boy is thought to have a small angiomatous anomaly in the depth of the left parietal lobe. No brain lesions are known in the other three. Evidence for bilateral brain dysfunction consists of minor motor abnormalities in three boys, oromotor deficits in

Improving the accuracy of automated cleft speech evaluation.

An automated cleft speech evaluator, available globally, has the potential to dramatically improve quality of life for children born with a cleft palate, as well as eliminating bias for outcome collaboration between cleft centers in the developed world. Our automated cleft speech evaluator interprets resonance and articulatory cleft speech errors to distinguish between normal speech, velopharyngeal dysfunction and articulatory speech errors. This article describes a significant update in the efficiency of our evaluator. Speech samples from our Craniofacial Team clinic were recorded and rated i

Alternative organization of speech perception deficits in children.

Children's first-language perception base takes shape gradually from birth onwards. Empirical research has confirmed that children may continue to fall short of age-based expectations in their speech perception. The purpose of this study was to assess the contribution of various perception processes in both reading and learning disabled children. A series of experiments was carried out with 450 Hungarian-speaking schoolchildren: learning disabled, reading disabled and typically developing control first-, second-, and third-graders. Data from seven perception tasks - focusing on acoustic, phone
