Reliability of Lexical Stress Transcription in Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

PURPOSE: Lexical stress errors are a reported characteristic of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) in American English-speaking children. However, the ability to reliably identify stress errors may vary given several factors. This study examines the interrater reliability of lexical stress accuracy ratings derived from phonetic transcriptions. METHOD: Fifty-six General American English-speaking participants with CAS aged 9-16 years engaged in picture-naming and multisyllabic word imitation tasks at up to four different time points. Some participants (n = 37) engaged in face-to-face data collec

A Response to Mailend et al.: Refined Operational Definitions for the Apraxia of Speech Rating Scale.

PURPOSE: This letter addresses a recent paper by Mailend et al. (2025) that expressed concerns about the Apraxia of Speech Rating Scale (ASRS) and offered guidelines and definitions regarding its principles, scale labels, item definitions, and scoring procedures, including the addition of new items to the scale. The primary purpose of this letter is to clarify the uncertainty that other users of the scale may have about whether the current ASRS version (ASRS 3.5; Duffy et al., 2023) should be altered to include the numerous proposed revisions. It provides examples of proposed revisions that, i

Inner Speech Can Predict Naming Treatment Outcomes in Aphasia: A Pilot, Single-Subject Design Study.

PURPOSE: This single-subject design study examined whether self-reported inner speech (IS)-the subjective experience of retrieving a word internally-can predict item-level outcomes in a cueing-based naming treatment for individuals with poststroke aphasia. METHOD: Five adults with chronic, poststroke aphasia completed an IS self-report task and naming task to identify appropriate treatment stimuli in two categories: successful IS (sIS) and unsuccessful IS (uIS). Participants then completed 2 weeks of hierarchical, cueing-based naming treatment targeting both sIS and uIS items. Treatment effec

Improving Intelligibility in Childhood Apraxia of Speech Through Communication Partner Training.

PURPOSE: Perceptual learning, improved understanding, of a degraded speech signal is driven by speech predictability. A hallmark feature of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is speech variability and inconsistency. This initial case study examined whether both naive and familiar listeners can improve their understanding of a child with CAS through perceptual training. METHOD: Speech recordings were collected from a 4-year-old boy with CAS and presented to listeners within a structured pretest-training-posttest paradigm. In Experiment 1, naive listeners (n = 44) received training using speech

A Novel Treatment of Error Awareness for Acquired Apraxia of Speech and Aphasia: Effects of a Single-Case Experimental Design Investigation.

PURPOSE: Error awareness (EA) is the ability to identify errors in one's speech productions. Persons with aphasia and apraxia of speech (A-AOS) have been found to vary widely in their EA abilities. EA, as measured by the accuracy of self-judgments of word production accuracy, has been found to be moderately associated with response to AOS treatment. EA training has rarely been included in AOS treatments, and the impact of EA as a treatment ingredient has not been studied. This study was designed to examine the effects of a novel treatment for impaired EA in individuals with A-AOS-the Treatment

Interactive Alignment After Communication Partner Training in Adults With Traumatic Brain Injury.

PURPOSE: Adults with moderate-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) often have significant communication challenges, particularly in interpersonal conversations. Most research aiming to understand these challenges has used static measures of behaviors shown by the person with TBI. Conversation is a dynamic, self-organizing, interactive communication genre, however, and static measures cannot capture those dynamics. We sought to advance understanding of conversational dynamics after TBI by characterizing partners' interactive alignment (IA), wherein two people begin to use the same words, gesture

Engaging Children in Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Development: Utilizing an Interactive iPad Tool to Capture Picture-Based P300-Based BCI Augmentative and Alternative Communication Design Preferences.

INTRODUCTION: P300-based brain-computer interface augmentative and alternative communication (P300-BCI-AAC) systems show promise for supporting communication for children with severe speech and physical impairments. However, little is known about how children prefer these displays to be designed. This study examined children's design choices and the rationales guiding those choices to inform the development of user-centered, pediatric BCI-AAC displays. METHOD: Thirty-eight typically developing children (8-12 years of age) used a P300-BCI-AAC design application to create their preferred pictur

Effects of Instruction With the Accessible Literacy Learning App on Three Literacy Skills for Children Who Use Augmentative and Alternative Communication.

PURPOSE: Despite the inestimable importance of literacy skills for children who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), many AAC users do not develop even basic literacy skills. The Accessible Literacy Learning (ALL) curriculum is evidence-based; however, little research has investigated the effects of instruction using the ALL app, and no research has examined parent-implemented adapted literacy instruction. METHOD: A single case study with a multiple-baseline across-participants design was used to investigate the effects of instruction using the ALL app, implemented by trained

The Cognitive Substrates of Action Fluency: A Multivariate Analysis in Parkinson's Disease.

PURPOSE: Action fluency (AF), the rapid generation of verbs, has been proposed as a sensitive marker of cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, it is unclear whether AF reflects domain-general executive-generative abilities or a disease-specific motor semantic deficit. This study examined the cognitive predictors of AF in individuals with PD without dementia (PD-ND). METHOD: Thirty-one older adults (14 PD-ND, 17 healthy controls) matched on age, sex, and education completed AF, letter fluency, semantic fluency, design fluency, processing speed, and global cognition tasks.
