Growth modulation and dynamic correction of early-onset thoracic scoliosis using a PEEK spring rib plate system: a porcine model study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the growth modulation and corrective effects of a novel polyetheretherketone spring rib plate (PEEK-SRP) implant in a porcine model of early-onset thoracic scoliosis (EOS). METHODS: 15 one-month-old pigs underwent thoracic nerve transection to induce right thoracic scoliosis. After 1.5 months of curve progression, animals were assigned to 3 groups: Untreated Group (UG, n = 6): Observed without intervention; Treated Group (TG, n = 6): PEEK-SRP implanted at three ribs on the convex apical levels; and Sham Group (SG, n = 3): Underwent the same surgical procedures as TG witho

Anterior thoracic posture increases thoracolumbar disc loading.

In the absence of external forces, the largest contributor to intervertebral disc (IVD) loads and stresses is trunk muscular activity. The relationship between trunk posture, spine geometry, extensor muscle activity, and the loads and stresses acting on the IVD is not well understood. The objective of this study was to characterize changes in thoracolumbar disc loads and extensor muscle forces following anterior translation of the thoracic spine in the upright posture. Vertebral body geometries (C2 to S1) and the location of the femoral head and acetabulum centroids were obtained by digitizing

Trunk asymmetry and facial symmetry in young adults.

The aim of the present study was to detect possible associations between trunk and cervical asymmetry and facial symmetry. Frontal cephalograms prepared in the natural head position, representing 79 subjects (40 males, 39 females) with mild to moderate trunk asymmetry, were analyzed separately for thoracic humps, lumbar prominences, and cervical inclination by discriminating two groups: right-sided-dominant and left-sided-dominant. The differences between the groups were analyzed using an unpaired 2-group t test. The results showed that location of the thoracic humps and inclination of the cer

Outcome of in-patient rehabilitation in patients with M. Scheuermann evaluated by surface topography.

For the follow-up of patients with sagittal spinal deformities and postural disorders, we do not have well validated measuring systems at our disposal. All clinical measuring parameters are liable to a high margin of error. With a growing number of patients suffering from postural disorders and kyphoses, we have to look for other possibilities to monitor changes of the back, as well as in the short term, without the support of X-rays. As the measuring of the surface with the Formetric system showed a high measurement reliability in previous studies, we used this system to demonstrate the rehab

Clinical features of collagen VI-related dystrophies: A large Brazilian cohort.

OBJECTIVES: Collagen VI-related dystrophies (COL6-RDs) have a broad clinical spectrum and are caused by mutations in the COL6A1, COL6A2 and COL6A3 genes. Despite the clinical variability, two phenotypes are classically recognized: Bethlem myopathy (BM, milder form) and Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy (UCMD, more severe form), with many patients presenting an intermediate phenotype. In this work, we present clinical and genetic data from 28 patients (27 families), aged 6-38 years (mean of 16.96 years), with COL6-RDs. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Clinical, muscle histology and genetic data are p

Discrepancy in clinical versus radiological parameters describing deformity due to brace treatment for moderate idiopathic scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: The shape of the torso in patients with idiopathic scoliosis is considered to reflect the shape of the vertebral column, however the direct correlation between parameters describing clinical deformity and those characterizing radiological curvature was reported to be weak. It is not clear if the management proposed for scoliosis (physiotherapy, brace, surgery) affects equally the shape of the axial skeleton and the surface of the body. The aim of the study was to compare clinical deformity of (1) idiopathic scoliosis girls being under brace treatment for radiological curves of 25 t

The relationships between low back pain and lumbar lordosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Clinicians regard lumbar lordotic curvature (LLC) with respect to low back pain (LBP) in a contradictory fashion. The time-honored point of view is that LLC itself, or its increment, causes LBP. On the other hand, recently, the biomechanical role of LLC has been emphasized, and loss of lordosis is considered a possible cause of LBP. The relationship between LLC and LBP has immense clinical significance, because it serves as the basis of therapeutic exercises for treating and preventing LBP. PURPOSE: This study aimed to (1) determine the difference in LLC in those with and

Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping of the Cervical Spinal Cord at 3T and Application to Multiple Sclerosis.

Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) is an advanced MRI technique that links phase variations to the local tissue susceptibility. In multiple sclerosis (MS), QSM has shown promise in characterizing brain lesions by assessing chronic inflammation and myelin content. However, in the spinal cord (SC), the question remains as to whether QSM can classify MS lesions as demyenilated/remyenilated and detect chronic inflammation. SC QSM poses novel challenges due to the small size, mobility and curvature of the cord, as well as magnetic field inhomogeneities caused by nearby vertebrae and physiolo

Spatial metabolomics revealed multi-organ toxicity and visualize metabolite changes induced by borneol in zebrafish.

This study focuses on the potential hazards of borneol (BO) to aquatic organisms and human health. BO has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, and is widely used in medicine, cosmetics, and detergents. In this study, zebrafish was used as a model organism to systematically evaluate the effects of BO on the heart, liver, kidney, and nervous system. The effects of BO on metabolites of zebrafish were studied using MALDI-MSI. The results showed that a high concentration of BO (500 μM) could induce morphological abnormalities (swim-bladder loss, spinal curvature, body-length

Convolutional Neural Network-Based Approach for Cobb Angle Measurement Using Mask R-CNN.

Background: Scoliosis is a disorder characterized by an abnormal spinal curvature, which can lead to negative effects on patients, affecting their quality of life. Given its progressive nature, the classification of the scoliosis severity requires an accurate diagnosis and effective monitoring. The Cobb angle measurement method has been widely considered as the gold standard for a scoliosis assessment. Commonly, an expert assesses scoliosis severity manually by identifying the most tilted vertebrae of the spine. However, this method requires time, effort, and presents limitations in measuremen

Geometric morphometric analysis of the brainstem and cerebellum in Chiari I malformation.

BACKGROUND: Chiari I malformation (CMI) is characterized by inferior descent of the cerebellar tonsils through the foramen magnum and is associated with headache and neck pain. Many morphometric research efforts have aimed to describe CMI anatomy in the midsagittal plane using classical measurement techniques such as linear dimensions and angles. These methods are less frequently applied to parasagittal features and may fall short in quantifying more intricate anatomy with fewer distinct homologous landmarks. METHODS: Landmark-based geometric morphometric techniques were used to asses CMI mor

Minimally Invasive Controlled Growing Rods for the Surgical Treatment of Early-Onset Scoliosis-A Surgical Technique Video.

BACKGROUND: Spinal deformities in children and adolescents can be easily divided into those occurring and diagnosed before the age of 10-early-onset scoliosis-and those occurring and diagnosed after the age of 10-late-onset scoliosis. When the curvature continues to progress and exceeds a Cobb angle of more than 60-65 degrees, surgical treatment should be considered. The most common treatment procedure for EOS is the surgical correction of the deformity using standard growing rods (SGRs), and in the case of congenital defects with additional hemivertebrae, it is the resection of the hemiverteb
