A case of a twenty-one year old woman with Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection associated with human immunodeficiency virus infection that represents the fifteen case reported in the literature is here presented. Hypothesis for which this association is infrequent and several therapeutic alternatives are reviewed.

We report the case of a patient with cryptogenic cirrhosis, new onset ascites, and hyperinfection with Strongyloides stercoralis who had significant eosinophilia of the peritoneal fluid. The eosinophilia resolved with treatment of the S. stercoralis infection, and did not recur during two subsequent episodes of ascites and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. Eosinophilic ascites is rare in parasitic infection, but it has been described in a variety of disorders which are discussed.

The role of larval passage through the head in the course of the migration of Strongyloides ratti in rats was investigated. Third-stage larvae (L3) recovered from various portions of donor rats were re-injected into the skin, cranial cavity and small intestine of recipient rats to check their ability for further growth. Cultured L3 (L3c) and the L3 recovered from the skin of donor rats (L3s) did not survive in the small intestine after intestinal inoculation. However, intestinal inoculation of L3 recovered from the head of donor rats (L3h) revealed growth to the adult stage. Cultured L3 inject

Immunosuppression causes Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection, but other factors may also be involved. We report a case of S stercoralis hyperinfection in an immunosuppressed patient that followed cimetidine therapy and was diagnosed by endoscopic biopsy.

A 60-year-old woman presented with a mass in the left upper abdominal quadrant. Noninvasive studies showed a cystic structure arising from the pancreas. Pathologic studies of the tumor revealed pancreatic cystadenocarcinoma; the fluid contained Strongyloides larvae. There was no evidence of disseminated Strongyloides or immunosuppression. Results of stool examinations were also negative for Strongyloides. Were these larvae the etiologic agent for the carcinoma? Other parasitic infestations have been associated with carcinoma. This is the first reported association between Strongyloides and cys

Helminths similar to Strongyloides stercoralis were recovered from the jejunum and ileum of a 6-month-old Boston Terrier that was shedding unusually large eggs, both unembryonated and embryonated, as well as first-stage larvae in fresh feces. Clinical signs included stunting, mucoid and blood-flecked feces, radiographic evidence of diffuse interstitial pulmonary infiltrate, focal dermatitis, and anemia. Decreased intestinal absorption of carbohydrate was found by means of the oral glucose and oral lactose tolerance tests. Serum protein and calcium values were decreased. At necropsy, histopatho

A case is reported of a 79-year-old Jamaican patient suspected of having malignancy of the gastrointestinal tract. This diagnosis was excluded by a Papanicolaou stain of his gastric aspirate, which revealed ova and larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis. This is the first time such ova have been reported in a Papanicolaou smear of gastric aspirate. A review of the literature on parasites encountered in the Papanicolaou smear is presented. The primary goal of the Papanicolaou cytologic screening technique is early diagnosis of malignancy. However, like fungal, bacterial and viral infections, paras

The survey was performed to study prevalence and intensity of parasitic infection in goats. Fecal samples were examined from 336 goats in southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Maryland. On the basis of fecal egg, oocyst, and larval counts, the following results were obtained. Eimerian oocysts were found in 100% of the fecal samples and the greatest fecal oocyst counts were found in goats under 6 months of age. Strongyle eggs and Strongyloides eggs were present in 76% and 20%, respectively, of the samples. Moniezia eggs were found in 9%, Trichuris eggs in 4%, and Nematodirus eggs in 1% of the
