Treatment of oral mucositis in hematologic patients undergoing autologous or allogeneic transplantation of peripheral blood stem cells: a prospective, randomized study with a mouthwash containing camelia sinensis leaf extract.

Oral mucositis is an important side effect of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCST), mainly due to toxicity of conditioning regimens. It produces significant pain and morbidity. The present study reports a prospective, randomized, non-blinded study testing the efficacy of a new mouthwash, called Baxidil Onco(®) (Sanitas Farmaceutici Srl, Tortona, Italy) in 60 hematologic patients undergoing HCST (28 autologous, 32 allogeneic). Baxidil Onco(®), used three times a day from Day -1 to Day +30, in addition to standard prophylactic schedules, was administered to 14 patients undergoing autol

Over-the-counter and compounded mouthwashes for radiotherapy-induced xerostomia: a randomized controlled trial.

Head and neck radiotherapy quantitatively and qualitatively compromises salivary flow, and salivary substitutes have the potential to alleviate the symptoms. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of two salivary substitutes in relieving symptoms of radiotherapy-induced xerostomia through a double-blind randomized controlled trial. Twenty-four patients were selected from a dental oncology clinic and randomly assigned to the over-the-counter or compounded mouthwash group. Each patient was instructed to rinse their oral cavity with the assigned solution three times a day for 30 days. Both p

Feasibility and patient reported tolerance of cryotherapy with Cooral mouth cooling device in patients undergoing radiation therapy (CooRay): a pilot study.

BackgroundRadiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) is a major side-effect of (chemo)radiation (CRT) of patients with head and neck cancer (HNC). This study tries to establish a novel cryotherapy (CyT) method using a mouth care device (MCD; Cooral®, BrainCool AB, Lund, Sweden) to prevent RIOM.MethodsPatients were non-randomly assigned to use the MCD after every radiotherapy session for 30-60 minutes. Subjects were asked to answer daily questionnaires assessing tolerability of the intervention. Mucositis was assessed at baseline, once weekly and at weeks 1/3/6 after CRT. The primary endpoint was

Oral Ulceration with Bone Sequestration: Key Insights for Clinicians and Their Relevance in Contemporary Clinical Practice-A Narrative Systematic Review.

Background: Oral ulceration with bone sequestration (OUBS) is an uncommon clinical lesion characterized by painful mucosal ulceration associated with exposed and necrotic bone in the oral cavity, often without known factors inducing osteonecrosis. Despite its potential for diagnostic confusion with more serious lesions, such as medication-related osteonecrosis, OUBS remains poorly understood and underreported. Objectives: To systematically review the literature on OUBS and identify its main clinical and radiographic characteristics to assist in early diagnosis and appropriate management. Metho

Efficacy of Low-Level Laser Therapy for Oral Mucositis in Hematologic Patients Undergoing Transplantation: A Single-Arm Prospective Study.

Oral mucositis significantly affects the quality of life in hematologic cancer patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Despite global evidence supporting the efficacy of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) for mucositis prevention, its clinical adoption in Japan is limited. This study aimed to fill this gap by evaluating the safety and efficacy of LLLT in a Japanese patient population. In a single-group, non-blinded, exploratory trial, we compared 21 LLLT-treated patients against a historical control of 96 patients. The primary endpoint was the incidence of Grade ≥ 2 mucositis,

Oral mucositis induced by anticancer treatments: physiopathology and treatments.

Oral mucositis is a frequent and devastating side effect of anticancer treatments. It impairs the patient's quality of life and also can be life threatening because severe infections and delayed or incomplete anticancer treatments may result. This problem has been largely overlooked and underestimated in the past. However, recently studies have been performed to precisely identify the epidemiology, cost, consequences, physiopathology, and treatments of oral mucositis. Clinical guidelines have recently been published to help the daily management of this frequent complication. In addition, some

Female sex as an independent prognostic factor in the development of oral mucositis during autologous peripheral stem cell transplantation.

Oral mucositis (OM) is a frequent complication of stem cell transplantation-associated toxicity in haematological malignancies, contributing to mortality. Therapy still remains mainly supportive. We assessed risk factors in retrospective analysis of 192 autologous peripheral stem cell transplantation patients with lymphoma and multiple myeloma (MM), respectively. Futhermore, we examined the hormone levels both in serum and saliva during transplantation in 7 postmenopausal female patients with lymphoma compared to healthy controls using electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA). Dermatologic conditions in women receiving systemic cancer therapy.

As advances in cancer therapies have improved cancer-related survival, novel therapeutics have also introduced a variety of dermatologic toxicities, and an increased number of patients are living with these sequalae. Women with cancer in particular experience a spectrum of dermatologic conditions that affect their skin, hair, nail, and mucosal surfaces. Studies have shown that these toxic effects can significantly affect quality of life and alter a woman's self-image, cultural identity, femininity, sexuality, and mental health. In severe instances, dermatologic toxicities may even disrupt canc

Primary Aggressive Oral Lymphomas (PAOL): A Narrative Review of Diagnosis, Molecular Features, Therapeutic Approaches, and the Integrated Role of Dentists and Hematologists.

Primary aggressive oral lymphomas (PAOL) are a rare subset of extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphomas arising in the oral cavity without evidence of other systemic involvement at diagnosis. PAOL accounts for only about 2-3% of all lymphomas. They most commonly belong to aggressive B-cell subtypes such as Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL), with occasional cases of Burkitt lymphoma and T-cell/NK-cell lymphomas. Clinically, these malignancies often present with non-specific symptoms (e.g., swelling, pain, ulceration, tooth mobility) that mimic benign dental condition

2022 Chinese expert consensus and guidelines on clinical management of toxicity in anti-CD19 chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy for B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Adoptive cellular immunotherapy with chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells has emerged as a novel modality for treating relapsed and/or refractory B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (B-NHL). With increasing approval of CAR T-cell products and advances in CAR T cell therapy, CAR T cells are expected to be used in a growing number of cases. However, CAR T-cell-associated toxicities can be severe or even fatal, thus compromising the survival benefit from this therapy. Standardizing and studying the clinical management of these toxicities are imperative. In contrast to other hematological malignancies,

Indian Society of Periodontology Good Clinical Practice Recommendations for dental pain management and use of analgesics.

Pain is one of the most frequent reasons for seeking dental care and significantly influences patient comfort, treatment acceptance, and clinical outcomes. Effective management of dental pain requires accurate diagnosis, timely intervention, and the rational use of analgesics supported by evidence-based clinical decision-making. Recognizing the need for structured guidance for everyday dental practice, the Indian Society of Periodontology has developed Good Clinical Practice Recommendations on Pain Management and the Use of Analgesics in Dental Clinics. These recommendations were formulated by

Radiation-Induced Oral Mucositis.

Radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) is a major dose-limiting toxicity in head and neck cancer patients. It is a normal tissue injury caused by radiation/radiotherapy (RT), which has marked adverse effects on patient quality of life and cancer therapy continuity. It is a challenge for radiation oncologists since it leads to cancer therapy interruption, poor local tumor control, and changes in dose fractionation. RIOM occurs in 100% of altered fractionation radiotherapy head and neck cancer patients. In the United Sates, its economic cost was estimated to reach 17,000.00 USD per patient with
