The effectiveness of an interactive audio-tactile map for the process of cognitive mapping and recall among people with visual impairments.

BACKGROUND: People with visual impairments can experience numerous challenges navigating unfamiliar environments. Systems that operate as prenavigation tools can assist such individuals. This mixed-methods study examined the effectiveness of an interactive audio-tactile map tool on the process of cognitive mapping and recall, among people who were blind or had visual impairments. The tool was developed with the involvement of visually impaired individuals who additionally provided further feedback throughout this research. METHODS: A mixed-methods experimental design was employed. Fourteen pa

Cognitive Test Scores and Progressive Cognitive Decline in the Aberdeen 1921 and 1936 Birth Cohorts.

The Aberdeen birth cohorts of 1921 and 1936 (ABC21 and ABC36) were subjected to IQ tests in 1932 or 1947 when they were aged about 11y. They … itive tests scores which fell below the -1.5 SD criterion for tests of progressive matrices, namely verbal learning, digit symbol and block design, did not support the concept that Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a stable class of acquired loss of function with significant links to the later emergence of a clinical dementia syndrome. This is consistent with ma …

A homopolymer polymorphism in the TOMM40 gene contributes to cognitive performance in aging.

INTRODUCTION: A highly polymorphic T homopolymer was recently found to be associated with late-onset Alzheimer's disease risk and age of onset. OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of the polymorphic polyT tract (rs10524523, referred as '523') on cognitive performance in cognitively healthy elderly individuals. METHODS: One hundred eighty-one participants were recruited from local independent-living retirement communities. Informed consent was obtained, and participants completed demographic questionnaires, a conventional paper-and-pencil neuropsychological battery, and the computerized Cambrid

Speech and Language Development of Two Brothers With Bainbridge-Ropers Syndrome: Phenotypic and Bioinformatic Support for a Cerebellar ASXL3 Hypothesis.

Bainbridge-Ropers syndrome (BRPS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder caused by variants in the ASXL3 gene. Nearly all cases are de novo, representing widely varying ASXL3 genotypes. Commonly observed traits include feeding difficulties, global motor delays, hypotonia, intellectual disability, autism, seizures, and craniofacial and skeletal changes. Difficulty with verbal communication is present in all cases, yet speech and language characteristics have not been described closely. Here, we present two brothers with BRPS due to suspected parental germline mosaicism. Clinical histories were b

A preliminary study of the different memory systems in neurofibromatosis type 1: What is impaired and what is spared?

BACKGROUND: Since 1990's, the cognitive profile of children with a neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) has been refined by many different studies. Children with NF1 may exhibit a variety of cognitive dysfunctions. Memory difficulties have been reported, but the results are contradictory and, compared to other cognitive functions, memory has been less evaluated. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the memory profile in NF1 with a particular population, children with NF1 without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS: Eighteen children with NF1 without ADHD and eig

The effects of childhood maltreatment and anxiety proneness on neuropsychological test performance in non-clinical older adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The effect of childhood maltreatment (CM) on neuropsychological performance is well established, but the effect of anxiety proneness (AP) on such performance has been underexplored. We assessed the predictive ability of CM and AP, and their interaction, in non-clinical adolescents, for a range of previously documented neuropsychological deficits. METHODS: Multiple linear regression models were used to assess the unique and combined influences of CM and AP on neuropsychological performance in 104 non-clinical adolescents, who underwent both neuropsychiatric and neuropsychological a

Cognitive rehabilitation in a visual variant of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is commonly associated with marked memory deficits; however, nonamnestic variants have been consistently described as well. Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a progressive degenerative condition in which posterior regions of the brain are predominantly affected, therefore resulting in a pattern of distinctive and marked visuospatial symptoms, such as apraxia, alexia, and spatial neglect. Despite the growing number of studies on cognitive and neural bases of the visual variant of AD, intervention studies remain relatively sparse. Current pharmacological treatments off

Bilateral amygdala damage impairs the acquisition and use of common ground in social interaction.

OBJECTIVE: The development of "common ground," or mutual knowledge of shared information, is believed to require the ability to update a mental representation of another person's thoughts and knowledge based on verbal information and nonverbal social and emotional signals, to facilitate economical communication. As in other forms of everyday social communication, the development of common ground likely requires the orchestration of multiple cognitive processes supported by various neural systems. Here, we investigate the contribution of the amygdala to these processes. METHOD: SM, a patient w

Music Therapists' Training and Education on Suicide Prevention in the United States.

Suicide is a significant public health concern and a leading cause of death for individuals across the lifespan. This study explored (a) what settings music therapists are working in to support individuals navigating suicidality; (b) their training and education on suicide prevention; and (c) how prepared, knowledgeable, and comfortable they feel implementing suicide-related care. Using a convergent mixed methods design, 458 credentialed music therapists working in the United States completed a survey, 19 of whom worked with people navigating suicidality and completed a qualitative interview.

The Effect of Cervical Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation on Word Memory in Healthy Adults: A Randomized Single-Blind Study.

PURPOSE: The noninvasive vagus nerve stimulation has presented a promising adjunctive intervention in cognitive communication disorders. This randomized single-blind study aims to investigate the effect of cervical transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) on verbal memory in healthy adults. METHOD: Thirty-one participants were stratified into an experimental group (n = 22) receiving 30-min cervical tVNS and a control group (n = 9).
