Rehabilitation outcome of individuals with nontraumatic myelopathy resulting from spinal stenosis.

A study was undertaken of 46 patients (19 cervical and 27 lumbar) admitted to an inpatient rehabilitation unit following surgical decompression for myelopathy or cauda equina syndrome resulting from spinal stenosis (SS). Individuals with SS represented 16 percent of all spinal cord injury (SCI) admissions. When compared to patients with traumatic SCI, patients with SS were significantly (t-test, p < .01) older (mean age 68 versus 39 years), more frequently retired/unemployed (89 percent versus 43 percent), more often married (57 percent versus 36 percent) and less often male (54 percent versus

Spinally projecting neurons of the dorsal column nucleus in a reptile: locus of origin and trajectory of termination.

Interconnections between the dorsal column nucleus and the spinal cord were investigated in a reptile, Caiman crocodilus. After placement of an anterograde tracer into the dorsal column nucleus, descending fibers are seen to leave this nucleus to enter the dorsal funiculus where they course ventrally to terminate in lamina V of the spinal cord as far caudally as C2. Placement of a retrograde tracer into cut fibers of the cervical spinal cord identified the relay cells of the dorsal column nucleus that project to the spinal cord. These neurons were mainly clustered in a caudal and ventral part

Development and validation of a model for individualized prediction of cervical insufficiency risks in patients undergoing IVF/ICSI treatment.

BACKGROUND: Women who conceived with in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) are more likely to experience adverse pregnancy outcomes than women who conceived naturally. Cervical insufficiency (CI) is one of the important causes of miscarriage and premature birth, however there is no published data available focusing on the potential risk factors predicting CI occurrence in women who received IVF/ICSI treatment. This study aimed to identify the risk factors that could be integrated into a predictive model for CI, which could provide further personalized and clin

The role of the cranial base in facial growth: experimental craniofacial synostosis in the rabbit.

Craniofacial synostosis designates premature fusion in sutures of the cranial vault (calvarium). When craniofacial synostosis is associated with a syndrome (e.g., Apert, Crouzon), premature fusion of the cranial base has been postulated to occur as well. This study was designed to determine whether the primary growth disturbance in craniofacial synostosis is located at the cranial base (i.e., spheno-occipital synchondrosis) or the calvarial vault (i.e., coronal and sagittal sutures) or both. Sixty newborn New Zealand White rabbits were randomly assigned to six groups: (I) calvarial control, (I

Balance, Gait Kinematics, and Fear of Falling After a Four-Month Targeted Training Program in a Patient with Cervical Dystonia: A Case Report.

In cervical dystonia (CD), balance and gait impairments can compromise daily activities and negatively affect quality of life. However, interventions addressing these deficits remain poorly investigated. A 54-year-old woman with CD, presenting balance and gait difficulties that interfered with work-related motor tasks, underwent a four-month training program. Sessions (40 min, three times per week) combined lower-limb strengthening, proprioceptive and balance exercises, and integrated motor-cognitive tasks. Pre- and post-intervention assessments included gait speed (GS), stride length (SL), an

Comparison of tracheal diameter in non-brachycephalic versus brachycephalic dogs using manubrium and thoracic inlet tracheal indexes.

INTRODUCTION: Narrowed tracheal lumen diameter (TLD) in dogs caused by congenital hypoplasia or acquired tracheal stenosis can result in adverse health effects. Standardized tracheal scores calculated from radiographic measurements have been used to assess tracheal diameter however comparisons have not been made to characterize differences in tracheal lumen among breeds. METHODS: The main objective of this study was to compare tracheal scores at three regions of the trachea among non-brachycephalic dogs, non-bulldog brachycephalic dogs, and bulldogs. Medical records and thoracic radiographs o

Surgical anatomy of the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve.

The internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (ibSLN) may be injured during anterior approaches to the cervical spine, resulting in loss of laryngeal cough reflex, and, in turn, the risk of aspiration pneumonia. Such a risk dictates the knowledge regarding anatomical details of this nerve. In this study, 24 ibSLN of 12 formaldehyde fixed adult male cadavers were used. Linear and angular parameters were measured using a Vernier caliper, with a sensitivity of 0.1 mm, and a 1 degrees goniometer. The diameter and the length of the ibSLN were measured as 2.1+/-0.2 mm and 57.2+/-7.7 mm, respec

Characterizing and reporting pelvic floor defects: the revised New York classification system.

The authors have devised a conceptual model and reporting system for characterizing, grading and staging pelvic floor defects. The system is user friendly and simple to learn and apply. It is based on commonly known anatomic landmarks and can be performed without memorizing or referring to a separate characterization and reporting plan. Completing the accompanying forms is self-explanatory and provides the information needed for proper comprehension and recording of anatomic defects. The model and reporting format have been used at our institutions for 5 years by medical students, residents, f

Plasma oxytocin but not prostaglandin F2 alpha metabolite levels at cerclage may predict preterm delivery.

Plasma oxytocin and prostaglandin F2 alpha metabolite (PGFM) concentrations were measured in 45 patients admitted for cerclage during the second trimester. Samples were collected before, 3 hours after, and 3 days after the Shirodkar procedure. Uterine activity was recorded by external tocography twice daily for 30 minutes. Twenty-eight women with uncomplicated pregnancy and commensurate gestational age served as controls. Cervical length, measured by ultrasonography, was significantly shorter before cerclage (36 +/- 2 mm) than after cerclage (43 +/- 2 mm) or compared with controls (48 +/- 1 mm
