Evidence of rabies virus exposure among humans in the Peruvian Amazon.

In May of 2010, two communities (Truenococha and Santa Marta) reported to be at risk of vampire bat depredation were surveyed in the Province Datem del Marañón in the Loreto Department of Perú. Risk factors for bat exposure included age less than or equal to 25 years and owning animals that had been bitten by bats. Rabies virus neutralizing antibodies (rVNAs) were detected in 11% (7 of 63) of human sera tested. Rabies virus ribonucleoprotein (RNP) immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies were detected in the sera of three individuals, two of whom were also seropositive for rVNA. Rabies virus RNP IgM

Bats worldwide carry hepatitis E virus-related viruses that form a putative novel genus within the family Hepeviridae.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is one of the most common causes of acute hepatitis in tropical and temperate climates. Tropical genotypes 1 and 2 are associated with food-borne and waterborne transmission. Zoonotic reservoirs (mainly pigs, wild boar, and deer) are considered for genotypes 3 and 4, which exist in temperate climates. In view of the association of several zoonotic viruses with bats, we analyzed 3,869 bat specimens from 85 different species and from five continents for hepevirus RNA. HEVs were detected in African, Central American, and European bats, forming a novel phylogenetic clade in

Human rabies--Wisconsin, 2010.

In late December 2010, a male resident of Wisconsin, aged 70 years, sought treatment for progressive right shoulder pain, tremors, abnormal behavior, and dysphagia at an emergency department (ED). He was admitted for observation and treated with benzodiazepines and haloperidol, a neuroleptic, for presumed alcohol withdrawal syndrome. The next day, he had rhabdomyolysis, fever, and rigidity, and neuroleptic malignant syndrome was diagnosed. The neuroleptic was discontinued, but the patient's clinical status worsened, with encephalopathy, respiratory failure, acute renal failure requiring hemodi

Genetic diversity of Histoplasma capsulatum isolated from infected bats randomly captured in Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina, using the polymorphism of (GA)(n) microsatellite and its flanking regions.

The genetic diversity of 47 Histoplasma capsulatum isolates from infected bats captured in Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina was studied, using sequence polymorphism of a 240-nucleotides (nt) fragment, which includes the (GA)(n) length microsatellite and its flanking regions within the HSP60 gene. Three human clinical strains were used as geographic references. Based on phylogenetic analyses of 240-nt fragments achieved, the relationships among H. capsulatum isolates were resolved using neighbour-joining and maximum parsimony methods. The tree topologies obtained by both methods were identical and

Japanese encephalitis viruses from bats in Yunnan, China.

Genome sequencing and virulence studies of 2 Japanese encephalitis viruses (JEVs) from bats in Yunnan, China, showed a close relationship with JEVs isolated from mosquitoes and humans in the same region over 2 decades. These results indicate that bats may play a role in human Japanese encephalitis outbreaks in this region.

Sexual selection and genital evolution in mammals: a phylogenetic analysis of baculum length.

Studies in invertebrate taxa suggest that postcopulatory sexual selection is an important factor in genital evolution. However, despite wide interspecific variation in genital morphology, evidence for an influence of sexual selection on mammalian genitalia is equivocal. Here I conduct phylogenetically controlled comparative analyses across four mammalian orders to assess how one aspect of this variation--male genital length--scales with (a) male body mass and (b) relative testis mass, the latter providing an index of the intensity of sperm competition. In all four orders, baculum (=os penis) l

Natural and experimental infection of sheep with European bat lyssavirus type-1 of Danish bat origin.

In 1998 and 2002, European bat lyssavirus type-1 (EBLV-1) was demonstrated in brain tissue of five Danish sheep suffering from neurological disorders. Four of the five sheep also had encephalic listeriosis. The animals originated from four flocks on pastures within a limited area of western Jutland. In a serological investigation in two of the herds, from which three of the diseased animals originated, EBLV-1 neutralizing antibodies were detected in only one of 69 sheep. In follow-up surveys, 2110 sheep sera collected at Danish slaughterhouses during 2000 were all negative for EBLV-1-antibodie

Collection, seminal characteristics and chilled storage of spermatozoa from three species of free-range flying fox (Pteropus spp.).

This study reports observations on the collection and characteristics of semen from free-range populations of flying fox in Brisbane, Australia. Semen was successfully recovered by electroejaculation from 107 of 115 wild flying foxes (Pteropus alecto, Pteropus poliocephalus and Pteropus scapulatus). A proportion of ejaculates collected from all three species contained seminal vesicle secretions, the incidence of which appeared related to breeding season. Ejaculate volume was small (5--160 microL), requiring a specialised collection vessel and immediate extension to avoid desiccation. Sperm mor

Experimental hendra virus infectionin pregnant guinea-pigs and fruit Bats (Pteropus poliocephalus).

Antibodies to Hendra virus (HeV) have been found in a high percentage of fruit bats (Pteropus spp.) in Australia, indicating a possible reservoir for the virus. The aim of the experiments reported here was to investigate transplacental infection as a possible mode of transmission of the virus in fruit bats and other animals. In a first experiment, 18 pregnant guinea-pigs in the mid-stage of gestation were inoculated with HeV, as an experimental model in a conventional laboratory animal. Nine developed HeV disease as confirmed by viral isolation, histopathology and immunohistochemistry. In five

Perceptions and public health risks of the bat-human interface in households from fragmented rural landscapes in southern Chile.

Land-use change and habitat fragmentation in southern Chile have favored synanthropic bat species, promoting their contact with domestic animals and humans, representing a potential risk of exposure. This study aimed to characterize dwellings with bat colonies in rural zones of the Los Ríos and Los Lagos regions, estimate the frequency of human-bat contact, and determine the health risk perception from residents. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in 69 rural dwellings. A structured survey was used to gather information on demographics, household characteristics, frequency of co

The disappearance of ORF8 in human-adapted coronaviruses: the Cheshire cat paradigm.

We studied the fate of a gene called ORF8 in different coronaviruses species during their passage to humans. We showed that this gene harbored stop codons in many epidemic SARS-CoV-2 variants in humans and in up to 86% of SARS-CoV-2 circulating in 2023 and therefore could be a non-virulence gene whose disappearance helps the epidemics spread. We questioned whether this is a general phenomenon following coronavirus passage to humans from another species, most often bats. We studied SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2, MERS-CoV, and the four coronaviruses endemic in humans for several years or decades and obse

A critical residue in a conserved RBD epitope determines neutralization breadth of pan-sarbecovirus antibodies with recurring YYDRxxG motifs.

The emergence of pandemic coronaviruses remains a global health concern, highlighting the need for broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) that can target multiple sarbecoviruses. In this study, we isolated and characterized a novel antibody, pT1679, that demonstrates exceptional neutralization breadth. The antibody prevented infection with SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern, such as Omicron BA.1, and effectively neutralized pseudotyped viruses displaying S proteins from many SARS-CoV-2 variants and various bat and pangolin sarbecoviruses, including both SARS-CoV-like and SARS-CoV-2-like viruses.

Echolocation frequency alteration, and hearing loss induced by an ototoxic drug in the echolocating bat Hipposideros pratti.

Noise exposure increases the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the outer hair cells (OHCs) of the cochlea, which subsequently damages OHCs and causes noise-induced hearing loss. However, increasing evidences have shown that echolocating bats can maintain their auditory sensitivity after intense noise exposure, indicating that they have a strong capacity to clear ROS, or that noise exposure does not increase ROS levels in the cochlea of the animals. To differentiate between these possibilities, the constant frequency-frequency modulation bats, Hipposideros pratti, were intraperitoneally

Structural determinants of spike infectivity in bat SARS-like coronaviruses RsSHC014 and WIV1.

UNLABELLED: The recurrent spillovers of coronaviruses (CoVs) have posed severe threats to public health and the global economy. Bat severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-like CoVs RsSHC014 and WIV1, currently circulating in bat populations, are poised for human emergence. The trimeric spike (S) glycoprotein, responsible for receptor recognition and membrane fusion, plays a critical role in cross-species transmission and infection. Here, we determined the cryo-electron microscopy (EM) structures of the RsSHC014 S protein in the closed state at 2.9 Å, the WIV1 S protein in the closed state at

Probable Pangolin Origin of SARS-CoV-2 Associated with the COVID-19 Outbreak.

An outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the 2019 novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) began in the city of Wuhan in China and has widely spread worldwide. Currently, it is vital to explore potential intermediate hosts of SARS-CoV-2 to control COVID-19 spread. Therefore, we reinvestigated published data from pangolin lung samples from which SARS-CoV-like CoVs were detected by Liu et al. [1]. We found genomic and evolutionary evidence of the occurrence of a SARS-CoV-2-like CoV (named Pangolin-CoV) in dead Malayan pangolins. Pangolin-CoV is 91.02% and 90.55% identical to SARS-CoV-2

A viral metagenomic survey identifies known and novel mammalian viruses in bats from Saudi Arabia.

Bats are implicated as natural reservoirs for a wide range of zoonotic viruses including SARS and MERS coronaviruses, Ebola, Marburg, Nipah, Hendra, Rabies and other lyssaviruses. Accordingly, many One Health surveillance and viral discovery programs have focused on bats. In this report we present viral metagenomic data from bats collected in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia [KSA]. Unbiased high throughput sequencing of fecal samples from 72 bat individuals comprising four species; lesser mouse-tailed bat (Rhinopoma hardwickii), Egyptian tomb bat (Taphozous perforatus), straw-colored fruit bat (Eid

Evolution and Cryo-electron Microscopy Capsid Structure of a North American Bat Adenovirus and Its Relationship to Other Mastadenoviruses.

UNLABELLED: Since the first description of adenoviruses in bats in 2006, a number of micro- and megabat species in Europe, Africa, and Asia have been shown to carry a wide diversity of adenoviruses. Here, we report on the evolutionary, biological, and structural characterization of a novel bat adenovirus (BtAdV) recovered from a Rafinesque's big-eared bat (Corynorhinus rafinesquii) in Kentucky, USA, which is the first adenovirus isolated from North American bats. This virus (BtAdV 250-A) exhibits a close phylogenetic relationship with Canine mastadenovirus A (CAdV A), as previously observed wi
