Distribution response of the diploid hybrid species Hippophae goniocarpa to climate change based on a three-dimensional geographic gradient.

Hippophae goniocarpa has been confirmed by molecular ecological evidence as a diploid hybrid species derived from the natural hybridization of Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. sinensis and Hippophae neurocarpa. Its distribution is strictly confined to sympatric hybrid zones of its parental species, exhibiting neither niche expansion nor significant heterosis. While existing studies have largely focused on the genetic evidence and mechanisms underlying its hybrid origin, the response of its geographic distribution to climate change remains largely unknown. To predict the distribution patterns and dy

Malaria transmission dynamics under climate change and solar geoengineering in South Asia: a GLENS-based assessment.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is expected to reshape malaria transmission dynamics in tropical and subtropical regions. Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI), a proposed solar geoengineering strategy to reduce global warming, could have unintended consequences for vector-borne diseases such as malaria. This study investigates how SAI, through the Stratospheric Aerosol Geoengineering Large Ensemble (GLENS-SAI) scenario, could alter malaria transmission patterns across seven South Asian countries-Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Iran, India, Nepal, and Pakistan-compared with an unmitigated warming

Assessing the determinants of municipal solid waste generation in Europe: A machine learning approach.

Waste management is significant for achieving climate goals, considering its contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions. While differences in waste management systems and generation rates across European countries are closely linked to socio-economic, demographic, and environmental factors, previous studies have predominantly focused on specific regions or local municipalities. This study addresses this gap by analyzing Europe as a single entity, providing an overview of the current waste management practices and legislation, assessing influencing factors and employing machine learning (M

Mathematical Modeling for Scrub Typhus and Its Implications for Disease Control.

BACKGROUND: The incidence rate of scrub typhus has been increasing in the Republic of Korea. Previous studies have suggested that this trend may have resulted from the effects of climate change on the transmission dynamics among vectors and hosts, but a clear explanation of the process is still lacking. In this study, we applied mathematical models to explore the potential factors that influence the epidemiology of tsutsugamushi disease. METHODS: We developed mathematical models of ordinary differential equations including human, rodent and mite groups. Two models, including simple and comple

A river runs through it: intraspecific variability in hotter-drought-related physiological traits across the Mississippi divide in Pinus taeda L.

Human activities are intensifying heatwaves and droughts, threatening forest ecosystems worldwide. However, understanding intraspecific variation in physiological traits that confer resistance to hotter drought is critical for predicting tree responses to climate change. In Pinus taeda L., long-term geographic isolation across the Mississippi River Valley after the last glacial maximum has resulted in distinct population genetic structures, likely reflecting historical adaptation to contrasting climatic conditions in western and eastern refugia. However, it remains unclear whether contemporary

Relation of climatic exposures with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy in a two-center retrospective cohort.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate relation between climatic exposures and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) in Chinese cities Shanghai and Sanya. BACKGROUND: ICP is a pregnancy-specific liver disease associated with adverse fetal outcomes. Although the etiology of ICP remains unclear, climatic exposures are increasingly recognized as one of the critical correlates in ICP onset. METHODS: This is a two-center retrospective cohort study included 48, 081 pregnant women from Shanghai (31°N, temperate) and Sanya (18°N, tropical). Baseline demographic data, pregnancy outcomes and meteorological d

Incorporating cyclone risk in the design of marine protected and conserved areas as an ecosystem-based adaptation approach.

Marine protected and conserved areas (MPCAs) are promoted as an ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) approach to increase community and ecosystem resilience to climate change. However, traditional approaches to MPCA design typically do not consider climate risk or habitat condition under a climate threat. We used the Great Sea Reef (GSR) in Fiji as a case study to develop a land-sea prioritization framework that links modeled sediment runoff from rainfall during extreme cyclone events to the probability of coral reefs being in good condition. We incorporated this information in an MPCA prioritizat

Rainstorm regimes modulate cyanobacterial bloom dynamics in deep reservoirs: Synergistic effects of nutrient pulses and hydrological perturbations.

Global expansion of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms, driven by anthropogenic nutrient loading and climate change, poses escalating threats to water security. While altered precipitation regimes are recognized as critical climate multipliers, their hierarchical controls on cyanobacterial harmful algal bloom dynamics remain poorly quantified, particularly in stratified reservoirs. Here, we integrate a 60-yr (1961-2020) trend analysis of rainfall extremes with 4 yr (2017-2020) of high-frequency monitoring of hydrology, nutrients, and phytoplankton through manual sampling and autonomous buoys

Predicting the Effect of Temperature Changes on Phlebotomus papatasi Activity, as the Main Vector of Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Iran.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) represents a significant vector-borne disease in Iran. Our study examined the status of zoonotic CL (ZCL) in the country and forecasted the influence of global climate change on the monthly activity of Phlebotomus papatasi, the main vector of ZCL in the country. To predict the impact of climate change on the monthly activity of Ph. papatasi, we obtained the monthly average minimum and maximum temperatures for both the reference and future periods, using the MIROC6 model and two different shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP) scenarios. Based on our analysis, we found

Quality of nutritional status assessment and its relationship with the effect of rainfall on childhood stunting: a cross-sectional study in rural Burkina Faso.

OBJECTIVES: In Burkina Faso, one in every four children under 5 years is stunted. Climate change will exacerbate childhood stunting. Strengthening the health system, particularly the quality of nutrition care at primary health facilities, can minimise the adverse climate effect on stunting. Thus, we examined the quality of nutritional status assessment (QoNA) during curative childcare services in primary health facilities in rural Burkina Faso and its relationship with rainfall-induced childhood stunting. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using anthropometric, rainfall, an

Who becomes more violent among Korean adolescents? Consequences of victimisation in school.

BACKGROUND: Mainly Western studies suggest that bullying increases risk of subsequent offending. Less is known about risk of violence specifically. Very little such research is from Asia - none from Korea. AIM: This study aimed to answer three research questions: Is being a victim of bullying in Korean schools associated with later perpetration of violent behaviour? Does type of bullying influence type of offending? Does school climate or parental control mediate this relationship? METHOD: Juvenile justice intake officers identified 606 young offenders who were asked to complete questionnair

Global climate change and its potential impact on disease transmission by salinity-tolerant mosquito vectors in coastal zones.

Global climate change can potentially increase the transmission of mosquito vector-borne diseases such as malaria, lymphatic filariasis, and dengue in many parts of the world. These predictions are based on the effects of changing temperature, rainfall, and humidity on mosquito breeding and survival, the more rapid development of ingested pathogens in mosquitoes and the more frequent blood feeds at moderately higher ambient temperatures. An expansion of saline and brackish water bodies (water with <0.5 ppt or parts per thousand, 0.5-30 ppt and >30 ppt salt are termed fresh, brackish, and salin

Eco-epidemiological clustering and cluster-wise forecasting of dengue in Mexico, 2020-2025.

Dengue transmission varies markedly across Mexico, posing challenges for short-term operational planning. We propose a two-layer framework that (i) constructs incidence-free eco-epidemiological clusters for the 32 Mexican states and (ii) produces one-week-ahead forecasts of weekly dengue cases at the cluster level with quantified uncertainty, expressed through P10-P90 prediction bands. Our analysis covers 283 epidemiological weeks per state from 2020 to 2025, with all 32 states retained after meteorological quality control. Clusters are identified using full-covariance Gaussian mixture models

An improved model for the population dynamics of cattle gastrointestinal nematodes on pasture: parameterisation and field validation for Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora in northern temperate zones.

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) are amongst the most important pathogens of grazing ruminants worldwide, resulting in negative impacts on cattle health and production. The dynamics of infection are driven in large part by the influence of climate and weather on free-living stages on pasture, and computer models have been developed to predict infective larval abundance and guide management strategies. Significant uncertainties around key model parameters limits effective application of these models to GIN in cattle, however, and these parameters are difficult to estimate in natural populations

ERAHUMED: An integrated modelling platform for the landscape-level ecological risk assessment of pesticides used in rice-farming systems.

Pesticides are major stressors affecting freshwater biodiversity; however, the cumulative risks posed by multiple substances used within the same crop, across different crops, or over multi-year application cycles remain poorly understood. Here we introduce the ERAHUMED model, a modeling platform designed to assess the ecological risks of pesticide mixtures associated with rice farming at the landscape scale. The model uses the Albufera Natural Park (Valencia, Spain), one of the most important Mediterranean coastal wetlands, as a reference area. ERAHUMED integrates a hydrological module, an ag

Assessing ecological quality in open-pit coal mines based on different remote sensing indices.

Open-pit coal mines are widely distributed in China, and the ecological monitoring of which is susceptible to geographical heterogeneity in hydrothermal conditions, vegetation types, and soil characteristics. To achieve accurate cross-regional monitoring, it is essential to evaluate the applicability of ecological quality assessment indices. Based on Google Earth Engine and uniform Landsat 8 OLI data, we used the standardized remote sensing ecological index (RSEIs), land surface ecological status composition index (LSESCI), new remote sensing-based ecological index (RSEInew), and surface coal

Impact of climate and land use on the temporal variability of sand fly density in Sri Lanka: A 2-year longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis has emerged as an escalating public health problem in Sri Lanka, with reported cases increasing nearly three folds over past decade, from 1,367 in 2014 to 3714 cases in 2023. Phlebotominae sand flies are the vectors of leishmaniasis. Their density is known to be influenced by context-specific climatic and land use patterns. Thus, we aimed to investigate how these factors drive sand fly density across Sri Lanka. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We analysed monthly collections of sand flies (n = 38,594) and weather data from ten sentinel sites representing three main ge

Modeling the 2016-2017 Yemen cholera outbreak with the impact of limited medical resources.

We present a mathematical model to investigate the transmission dynamics of the 2016-2017 Yemen cholera outbreak. Our model describes the interaction between the human hosts and the pathogenic bacteria, under the impact of limited medical resources. We fit our model to Yemen epidemic data published by the World Health Organization, at both the country and regional levels. We find that the Yemen cholera outbreak is shaped by the interplay of environmental, socioeconomic, and climatic factors. Our results suggest that improvement of the public health system and strategic implementation of contro
