Aging of the frontal lobe.

Healthy aging is associated with numerous deficits in cognitive function, which have been attributed to changes within the prefrontal cortex … t age-related declines in cognition can be remediated by various methods such as physical exercise, cognitive training, or noninvasive brain stimulation. Overall, because cognitive aging is associated with numerous life-course and lifestyle factors, successful aging likely begins in early life, while maintaining cognition or remediating declines is a life-long proce …

Efficacy of stimulus discrimination training for reducing unwanted memories in student journalists.

Background: Journalists are frequently exposed to traumatic images and events, which may contribute to poor mental health, especially in those starting in the profession. Evidence-based preventative tools are needed to reduce the effects of exposure to these occupational stressors. Previous research demonstrates that the strategy journalists most commonly apply to traumatic images is suppression. Objective: This experiment investigated whether stimulus discrimination, a technique used in cognitive therapy for PTSD (CT-PTSD; Ehlers et al., 2005. Clinical decisions in fetal-neonatal neurology I. reproductive and pregnancy health influence the neural exposome over multiple generations.

Interdisciplinary fetal neonatal neurology (FNN) training requires integration of reproductive health factors into evaluations of the maternal-placental-fetal (MPF) triad, neonate, and child over the first 1000 days. Serial events that occur before one or multiple pregnancies impact successive generations. A maternal-child dyad history highlights this continuity of health risk, beginning with a maternal grandmother's pregnancy. Her daughter was born preterm and later experienced polycystic ovarian syndrome further complicated by cognitive and mental health disorders. Medical problems during he

Neurogenesis enhances response specificity to spatial pattern stimulation in hippocampal cultures.

OBJECTIVE: Adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus facilitates cognitive functions such as pattern separation in mammals. However, it remains unclear how newborn neurons mediate changes in neural networks to enhance pattern separation ability. Here, we developed an in vitro model of adult neurogenesis using rat hippocampal cultures in order to investigate whether newborn neurons can be directly incorporated into neural networks related to pattern separation to produce functional improvements. METHOD: We optimized at schedule of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) administration to enhance neu

Associations Between Self- and Informant-Reported Abilities of Instrumental Activities of Daily Living and Cognitive Functions in Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment.

OBJECTIVE: Older adults (OAs) with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) show disabilities in instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), which have been linked to compromised cognitive functioning. However, it is unclear which cognitive functions are primarily involved. The present study sought to identify the cognitive function(s) most strongly associated with the IADL limitations in MCI. METHOD: OAs with MCI (N = 120) completed cognitive tasks measuring general cognitive processing speed, working memory (WM) maintenance and updating, inhibition, and shifting ability. IADL abilities were ass

Sensory Reinforcement Feedback Using Movement-Controlled Smartphone App Facilitates Movement in Infants with Neurodevelopmental Disorders: A Pilot Study.

New wearable technology opens new possibilities for low-cost, easily accessible home-based interventions as a supplement to typical clinical rehabilitation therapy. In this pilot study, we tested a new interactive adjustable Feedback training system on 14 infants at high risk of cerebral palsy between 2 and 12 months of age to facilitate increased movements. The system consists of four wireless motion sensors placed on the infant's limbs. Inertial sensors track the infant's movements which control auditory and visual stimuli that act as motivational feedback. A 15 min usage of the Feedback tra

Spaced training improves learning in Ts65Dn and Ube3a mouse models of intellectual disabilities.

Benefits of distributed learning strategies have been extensively described in the human literature, but minimally investigated in intellectual disability syndromes. We tested the hypothesis that training trials spaced apart in time could improve learning in two distinct genetic mouse models of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by intellectual impairments. As compared to training with massed trials, spaced training significantly improved learning in both the Ts65Dn trisomy mouse model of Down syndrome and the maternally inherited Ube3a mutant mouse model of Angelman syndrome. Who Benefits from Anxiety-Related Interpretation Bias Training? The Role of Individual Differences in Interpretation Inflexibility and Intolerance of Uncertainty.

While anxiety-related cognitive bias modification for interpretations (CBM-I) is generally effective in reducing negative interpretation bias and anxiety, individuals differ in the extent to which they benefit from CBM-I. This proof-of-concept study investigated whether interpretation inflexibility and intolerance of uncertainty account for variability in CBM-I's effects on interpretations. Participants (N = 274), primarily female students, completed either a positive or a negative online single-session CBM-I training. Interpretation inflexibility and intolerance of uncertainty were measured b

A pilot study and brief overview of rehabilitation via virtual environment in patients suffering from dementia.

Dementia is one of the increasing problems of modern societies. The immediate cure is not a possible solution, at least at the moment, but science has found a number of new ways to retard and under specific conditions to halt its development. A potential, and constantly evolving scientific field is the use of Computerized Cognitive Rehabilitation (CCR) and Virtual Environments (Vr.E). According to the existing literature, subjecting patients to various neuro-rehabilitative conditions within 3D virtual environments, allows them to obtain significant therapeutic benefits in which both transferab
