THE DEVELOPMENT OF IRRIGATION AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE TRANSMISSION OF BILHARZIASIS IN TANGANYIKA.

Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium are widely distributed throughout East Africa, each being transmitted by several intermediate hosts. It is feared that the increased use of irrigation, which is proposed in Tanganyika to expand agricultural productivity, will also increase the incidence and intensity of schistosomal infection. Nine newly developed irrigation schemes have been examined to provide base-line data against which any future observations on the build-up of bilharziasis can be compared. A description is given in tabular form of each scheme together with the results of sn

The Real-World Safety Profile of Haloperidol: A Comprehensive Pharmacovigilance Analysis Using the Large-Scale FAERS Database.

OBJECTIVE: Haloperidol is a widely prescribed antipsychotic, but its long-term safety profile across broad populations remains insufficiently researched. Using the large-scale FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database, this study sought to comprehensively characterize the real-world adverse event profile of haloperidol and identify potential safety signals. METHODS: Adverse event reports from FAERS spanning Q1 2004 through Q1 2026, with haloperidol listed as the primary suspect drug, were analyzed. Disproportionality analyses employing four complementary algorithms (ROR, PRR, BCPNN,

Topic-specific living databases of clinical trials: A scoping review of public databases.

INTRODUCTION: Conducting systematic reviews of clinical trials is time-consuming and resource-intensive. One potential solution is to design databases that are continuously and automatically populated with clinical trial data from harmonised and structured datasets. This scoping review aimed to identify and map publicly available, continuously updated, topic-specific databases of clinical trials. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, the preprint servers medRxiv, arXiv, Open Science Framework, and Google. We characterised each database using seven predefined features (access mod

Insight into human allogeneic CAR-T therapy: an open-access dataset.

Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy demonstrates significant efficacy in various cancers, predominantly as a subsequent treatment line following multiple prior therapies. When compared to autologous options, allogeneic CAR-T products offer distinct advantages related to cell quality and cost-effectiveness. Because CAR-T cells differ fundamentally from conventional pharmaceuticals, mathematical modeling is essential to elucidate their exposure-response relationships. However, model utility depends on robust parametrization, which requires high-quality data. Although clinical data a

The Claims Data Learning & Enhancing for Algorithm Refinement (CLEAR) Study: Overview of the Study Design and Baseline Profile.

Medical claims data are increasingly used in epidemiological studies but are inadequately validated to ensure their reliability in identifying diseases. We developed the Claims data Learning & Enhancing for Algorithm Refinement (CLEAR) Study as a database platform to enable the systematic, low-cost implementation of validation studies in Japan. The CLEAR Study links routinely generated medical claims data from hospitals with diagnostic data (eg, laboratory data and diagnostic imaging reports) at the patient level. Using diagnostic data as the gold standard for disease identification, researche

A novel bilateral cross-attention network for multi-label fundus disease diagnosis.

Multi-label fundus disease classification aims to assign multiple ocular disease labels to bilateral fundus images, enabling automated screening and clinical decision support. In contrast to most existing computer-aided systems that process each eye independently and rely on shallow feature fusion, we explicitly model binocular structure and adaptively combine information from both eyes to handle complex, real-world fundus scenes. To this end, we introduce DualCrossAttnNet, a multi-label fundus disease classification network specifically designed for binocular analysis. In particular, we obtai

Cross-View Multimodal Vision-Based Assessment Framework for Traditional Chinese Medicine Rehabilitation Training.

Vision-based assessment can provide convenient and cost-effective evaluation in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) rehabilitation training, where action quality assessment (AQA) from computer vision offers a promising solution. Existing automatic AQA frameworks for physical therapy typically rely on skeletal data captured from a single viewpoint, which is inefficient for TCM techniques such as acupuncture or Tuina that involve dense hand self-occlusion and complex hand-object interactions. To address these challenges, we propose CME-AQA, a cross-view, multimodal vision-based assessment framewo

Enhancing classification accuracy in medical datasets using a hybrid distance and cluster refinement-based K-means clustering method.

Machine learning methods, especially the K_Means clustering method, have demonstrated potential in analyzing medical data by facilitating pattern detection. However, the classic K_Means algorithm suffers from two major limitations: (1) its reliance on a single, often suboptimal distance metric (typically Euclidean), and (2) the lack of a mechanism to refine clusters post-assignment, which can lead to poor cohesion and misgrouping. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel enhanced K-Means clustering framework with two key innovations: (i) a hybrid distance approach that combines

Evaluation of Energy and Nutrient Estimates from Large Language Models Using Text-Based Queries.

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) have emerged as promising tools for estimating energy and nutrient values, yet most existing evaluations focus on image-based queries rather than text-based queries. Few studies compare LLM estimates with reference databases commonly used in nutrition research. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine agreement between LLM estimates and a research food composition database for energy and nutrients and to determine if agreement varies by food group. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of energy and nutrient estimates for frequently consumed

The application of transoral robotic surgery in the treatment of head and neck tumors: a bibliometric analysis based on the web of science core collection database.

The conventional approach for treating head and neck tumors typically involves open surgery, such as mandibular osteotomy. This method not only results in substantial trauma but may also cause facial deformity, malocclusion, severe dysphagia, and other complications. Recently, transoral robotic surgery (TORS) has become a viable alternative for complex head and neck tumor resections, offering a clearer and wider surgical field along with enhanced precision and flexibility, significantly minimizing the complications associated with open surgery. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of

ETHER: a proposal for a European peri-operative data sharing and registry network.

Peri-operative medicine is a critical component of contemporary healthcare delivery. Despite significant advancements, peri-operative complications remain a relevant concern. Obtaining reliable risk estimates, identifying potential causes, and studying new interventions, revised policies or implementation of best practices to prevent complications, requires data from a large number of participants. Electronic Patient Record systems offer the opportunity to unlock these data, but the limited standardisation of databases and sharing frameworks available across Europe limit the effective use of t

Model-based, data-driven and hybrid biometric person authentication using cardiac signals of electrical, mechanical and optical nature.

The article is devoted to development, investigation, and comparative analysis of the new model-based, data-driven and hybrid authentication technologies utilizing cardiac signals of different physical nature (electrocardiogram (ECG), seismocardiogram (SCG) and photoplethysmogram (PPG)). The proposed model-based and hybrid pipelines rely on representing cardiac signals as cyclic random processes with variable rhythm and on rhythm-adaptive processing for cycle alignment and feature extraction. The rhythm-adaptive estimate of the mathematical expectation is used as a compact subject-specific rep

Demographic and clinical trends of young breast cancer patients from the national cancer database: disproportionate effect on minority populations.

PURPOSE: There is an increasing incidence of young breast cancer (YBC) patients with uncertainty surrounding the factors and patterns that are contributing. METHODS: We obtained characteristics and survival data from 206,156 YBC patients (≤ 40 years of age) diagnosed between 2005 and 2019 from the National Cancer Database (NCDB). Patients were subdivided into two comparison groups based on year of diagnosis (2005-2009, Old vs. 2015-2019, New group). A Chi-square test of independence was employed to measure the changes. Cox proportional hazards model was used to explore the variables influenci

VLM-CPL: Consensus Pseudo-Labels From Vision-Language Models for Annotation-Free Pathological Image Classification.

Classification of pathological images is the basis for automatic cancer diagnosis. Despite that deep learning methods have achieved remarkable performance, they heavily rely on labeled data, demanding extensive human annotation efforts. In this study, we present a novel human annotation-free method by leveraging pre-trained Vision-Language Models (VLMs). Without human annotation, pseudo-labels of the training set are obtained by utilizing the zero-shot inference capabilities of VLM, which may contain a lot of noise due to the domain gap between the pre-training and target datasets. To address

Slope Chain Code-based scale-independent tortuosity measurement on retinal vessels.

Retinal vascular tortuosity presents valuable potential as a clinical biomarker for many relevant vascular and systemic diseases. Our work exhibits twofold: first, the definition of a novel scale-invariant metric to measure retinal blood vessel tortuosity; and second, the generation of a local database, called SCALE-TORT, with the intention of providing a means to test the scale invariance property on real retinal vessels rather than on synthetic data. The proposed scale invariant tortuosity metric is based on the Extended Slope Chain Code which uses variable straight-line segments for describ
