Anatomical study of the scleral ring and eyeball of the long-eared owl (Asio otus) with anatomical methods and diagnostic imaging techniques.

BACKGROUND: The scleral ring in birds consists of ossicles that are fixed as small plates by cartilage joints and have no articulation to other parts of the skeleton. OBJECTIVE: Due to inadequate examination of the scleral ring anatomy and its specific form in owls, this study aimed to investigate the exact structure of the scleral ring and some morphometric characteristics of the eyeball in a long-eared owl (Asio otus). METHODS: The eyes of 20 alive and 10 dead male and female owls were examined. In addition to common anatomical methods, computed tomography scans and radiographic and ultras

A novel two-stage strategy combing tissue expansion and Nagata`s technique for total auricular reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: This study was performed to explore the clinical application of the Nagata's technique for combing tissue expansion in auricular reconstruction. METHODS: The auricular reconstruction was performed in two surgical stages. At the first stage, an 80 ml expander was inserted in the mastoid region after preoperative evaluation. After a gradual expansion period and nearly 2-month rest time, the flap achieved the appropriate area and thickness. At the second stage, the expander was removed and a three-layer cartilage framework was inserted into the pocket through a Y-shaped lobule incisi

The role of imaging in the evaluation of hoarseness: A review.

Hoarseness is a common symptom indicating an abnormal change in the quality of voice and has a lifetime prevalence of around 30%. There are multiple causes of hoarseness, ranging from acute laryngitis, chronic laryngitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux, functional dysphonia due to vocal overuse or abuse, vocal cord paralysis (VCP), to various pathologies and masses in the larynx. A detailed history and thorough physical examination, and in many cases, laryngoscopy by a clinician are the initial steps in its management. Laryngoscopy should be considered if hoarseness persists for more than 2 weeks wi

Abnormal Proteoglycan Synthesis Due to Gene Defects Causes Skeletal Diseases with Overlapping Phenotypes.

In recent years, massively parallel sequencing technologies have helped us to identify novel disease genes and solve the mysteries behind rare diseases. Today, we know that some diseases with many overlapping and distinct clinical features, as presented in this review, can be caused by mutations in genes that encode enzymes playing crucial roles at different steps of the exact same pathway. In this review, we exclusively focused on 5 genes - XYLT1, XYLT2, B4GALT7, B3GALT6, and B3GAT3 - that encode enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of the common tetrasaccharide linker region of proteoglycans

[Spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid fistula in the tegmen tympani].

The author's experience with spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) otorrhea from the tympanomastoid tegmen is based on the management of two clinical cases, the temporal bone histopathological findings in a third case suffering fatal meningitis and a review of the literature. Characteristically, the disorder occurs in otherwise healthy ears and is the consequence of embryogenic faults in the dura mater and adjacent tegmen. After years of exposure to physiologically normal CSF pressures, these faults may fistulize into the tympanomastoid compartment. The onset may be at any age, but is more com

Effect of mavoglurant (AFQ056), a selective mGluR5 antagonist, on the pharmacokinetics of a combined oral contraceptive containing ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel in healthy women.

Generalized arterial calcification of infancy (GACI) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by early onset of extensive mineralization of the cardiovascular system. The classical forms of GACI are caused by mutations in the ENPP1 gene, encoding a membrane-bound pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase that hydrolyzes ATP to AMP and inorganic pyrophosphate. The asj-2J mouse harboring a spontaneous mutation in the Enpp1 gene has been characterized as a model for GACI. These mutant mice develop ectopic mineralization in skin and vascular connective tissues as well as in cartilage and collagen-

Auricular reconstruction in congenital anomalies of the ear.

In looking at the use of autogenous cartilage for auricular reconstruction as a corrective option for congenital anomalies of the ear, it is obvious that it has become refined to the point that the surgical outcome typically pleases patients and their families if their expectations are realistic. Thus, surgeons are able to help ward off the agonizing abuse that these young patients are inevitably subjected to when born with deformities that are visible to peers. Delay of reconstruction beyond age 10 can lead to significant, and possibly, permanent psychologic sequelae resulting from harassment

[Relapsing polychondritis developing in a patient with Graves' disease: a possible association with propylthiouracil].

A 31-year-old woman presented 1993 with fever, painful swelling of cartilaginous portions of the ears and the bridge of nose, polyarthralgia including costochondroral pains, and episcleritis. She has been taking propylthiouracil since 1991 when she was diagnosed as Graves' disease. Laboratory evaluations revealed an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) of 133 mm/h, a high CRP level of 13.2 mg/dl and positive antinuclear antibodies and anti-type II collagen antibodies. Histopathological findings of the biopsy specimen from the auricular cartilage included chondrocyte degeneration, matr

Endoscopic push-through technique compared to microscopic underlay myringoplasty in anterior tympanic membrane perforations.

BACKGROUND: Microscopic myringoplasty is the most frequently performed procedure for repairing tympanic membrane perforations. The endoscopic transcanal approach bypasses the narrow ear canal segment and provides a wider view. METHODS: An open-label randomised clinical trial was conducted on 56 patients with small anterior tympanic membrane perforations. Perforations were repaired with an endoscopic push-through technique (n = 28) or a microscopic underlay technique (n = 28). Follow up was conducted using endoscopic examination and pure tone audiometry three months' post-operatively. RESULTS
