A Lightweight Multi-Articular Passive Exoskeleton Using a Single Elastic Band to Improve Crouch Gait Pattern: A Pilot Study.

Crouch gait, characterized by excessive flexion of the lower-limb joints, is a common gait disorder among children with cerebral palsy (CP) that compromises mobility and increases energy expenditure. Although surgical and orthotic interventions can improve alignment, maintaining these benefits requires continued postural support and gait practice. While powered exoskeletons have been developed to support upright and coordinated movement, they are often too heavy and complex for practical use. To address this, we developed a lightweight passive exoskeleton that assists the hip, knee, and ankle

Diagnostic Cut-off Values for Newly Developed Noninvasive Elastance-Based Indices in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy-Associated Cardiomyopathy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy–associated cardiomyopathy (DMDAC) is a leading cause of mortality in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Conventional reliance on ejection fraction (EF) may underestimate early myocardial dysfunction. This study utilized the previously published dataset by Ajiboye et al. (Heart Vessels 40(8):696–706, 2025) comprising 30 DMDAC patients who underwent serial cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging between 2014 and 2023. Noninvasive indices—mean elastance, contractility, and energy efficiency—were derived using an innovative optimization approach by integrating

Bond Softening and Elastic Confinement of Monolithic Dense Binary Alloys for High Volumetric Capacity of K-Ion Battery Anodes.

Two-dimensional (2D) Sb─Bi alloys are considered as the promising high-capacity and high-rate anodes of potassium-ion batteries, yet their practical application is limited by low density and structural degradation. Herein, we propose an intrinsic-extrinsic dual-stabilization strategy that integrates 2D binary Sb0.6Bi0.4 nanosheets into 3D elastic graphene networks, constructing a highly dense monolithic architecture (HD-Sb0.6Bi0.4@G). This design features with high density (2.6 g cm-3) and electrical conductivity (555.6 S m-1), delivering large volumetric capacity (1355.1 mAh cm-3) and high ar

Nonsurgical Repositioning of the Premaxilla Using a "Lasso" Elastic Band Technique in Conjunction With Presurgical Lip, Alveolus, and Nose Approximation (PLANA).

This case report presents a patient with bilateral complete cleft lip and palate with a severely deviated and rotated premaxilla. The infant was treated with a combination of lip taping and presurgical lip, alveolus, and nose approximation (PLANA) therapy for 3 months before primary lip and nose repair. Derotation and centering of the premaxilla was accomplished using a "Lasso" elastic band system, facilitating PLANA therapy. This treatment protocol promoted an esthetic lip and nose repair, while minimizing soft tissue tension and avoiding a surgical premaxillary setback.

Diaphyseal forearm fractures without fluoroscopy: Titanium elastic nailing system (TENS): A paediatric case series from Nepal.

In resource-limited settings such as rural Nepal, the lack of intra-operative fluoroscopy often forces clinicians to choose between suboptimal conservative management or referral to distant centres. Our case series presents the feasibility of the titanium elastic nailing system for displaced childhood both-bone forearm fractures using tactile feedback and portable radiography instead of a C-arm. While the rate of open reduction was higher than in a fluoroscopy-guided series (2/9 for radius, 4/9 for ulna), all cases achieved stable intramedullary placement and clinical union. This approach offe

Comparative Study of Functional and Radiological Outcomes of Antegrade Versus Retrograde Titanium Elastic Nailing for Pediatric Ulnar Diaphyseal Fractures.

Background Pediatric forearm fractures account for approximately 40% of childhood skeletal injuries, with ulnar fractures being particularly prevalent. Titanium Elastic Nailing (TEN) offers an effective minimally invasive option for these injuries; however, the optimal nail entry point - antegrade (olecranon) versus retrograde (distal ulna) - remains debated. This study compared functional and radiological outcomes, complication profiles, and implant-related morbidity between the two approaches. Methods A retrospective comparative study was conducted from May 2023 to May 2025 at the R.L. Jalap

Mechanical characterization of elastic edible films with single, crosslinked and interpenetrating biopolymer networks using combined uniaxial and biaxial analysis.

Stretchable and compliant films can be prepared from edible biopolymers such as hydrocolloids and proteins. Their mechanical performance under stress affects their potential applications. This study investigates the uniaxial and biaxial extensional properties of various edible hydrogel films plasticized to various degrees. Hydrogel films consisting of single biopolymer networks (SN), crosslinked networks (CN) and interpenetrating networks (IPN) were prepared using gelatine, gelatine-caseinate and alginate-agar, respectively, with different concentrations of glycerol. Their extensional properti

Mechanical behavior of elastic abdominal binders and semi-rigid corsets under patient-applied forces and physiologically relevant loading.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal binders are commonly prescribed after abdominal surgery and hernia repair despite limited evidence supporting their mechanical effectiveness. Elastic abdominal binders and semi-rigid corsets are frequently used interchangeably, although their mechanical behavior under physiologically relevant conditions remains poorly defined. AIM: To compare the mechanical behavior of elastic abdominal binders and semi-rigid corsets under patient-applied forces and controlled tensile loading, and to assess their effects on dynamic abdominal circumference and basic respiratory parameters.

Reorientation of Spin Polarization in Pt via Elastic Spin Scattering for Efficient Magnetization Switching in Mn3Sn/Pt/Co Trilayer.

Spintronic devices driven by spin-orbit torque (SOT) technology hold immense potential for energy-efficient memory. Given the reliance of conventional SOT devices on magnetic fields, achieving field-free magnetization switching is a prerequisite for the advancement toward high-density integration. While harnessing low-symmetry materials enables switching without field via unconventional spin currents, however, this approach faces an intrinsic trade-off where the introduction of out-of-plane spin polarization compromises the dominant in-plane component, resulting in prohibitive critical current

Viscous and Elastic Efficacies in Thickening Liquid Foods for Dysphagia Patients: Examination Using Newtonian and Shear-Thinning Viscoelastic Liquids.

A role of the shear-thinning property of thickened liquids used for supporting the dysphagia patients was examined utilizing the rheologically various properties of test liquids. The test liquids prepared through exploration of viscoelastic liquids were a Newtonian viscous liquid and non-Newtonian ones whose shear-thinning levels were different. For these test liquids, the flow experiments were performed with the swallowing model apparatus. The viscous effect in the flows in the apparatus was estimated by Stokes' law of resistance. The elastic effect, in other words, the elastic efficacy in th

A simulation-based comparison of Boruta, LASSO, and Elastic Net for variable selection in logistic regression, with an ovarian cancer miRNA application.

BACKGROUND: Variable selection is a central challenge in logistic regression, particularly in high-dimensional biomedical applications where correlated predictors and limited sample sizes complicate reliable identification of relevant variables. This study aims to systematically compare three widely used variable selection approaches - Boruta, LASSO, and Elastic Net - under a range of data-generating conditions and to illustrate their performance using an ovarian cancer miRNA dataset. METHODS: We conducted a simulation study across 36 logistic regression scenarios varying in sample size, dime

Orthodontic camouflage for skeletal class III patients with anterior and posterior crossbite using miniscrews and intermaxillary elastics: A case report.

Correcting skeletal Class III malocclusion in adults can be challenging and may require either orthognathic surgery or orthodontic camouflage, depending on a malocclusion's severity. This case report describes the successful use of mini-screws to distalize the mandibular whole arch in a female patient aged 18 undergoing non-extraction camouflage therapy for skeletal Class III malocclusion. The patient presented with anterior and posterior crossbites, crowding in both upper and lower arches, and the concave profile. After third molar extractions, followed by initial alignment and leveling, two

Bi-ventricular elastic material parameters estimation using 3D CMR myocardial strains in rheumatic heart disease patients.

Understanding the elastic material behavior of myocardium during the diastolic phase is critical for evaluating cardiac function and improving treatments for diastolic abnormalities. This study introduces a novel multi-objective optimization framework that incorporates both strain and volume measurements to enhance the accuracy of myocardial property assessments in Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) patients and healthy controls. By employing global volume and strain measurements instead of segmented strains from the sixteen AHA regions, we achieve a robust alignment with the Klotz curve across all
