Epidemiological analysis and emergency nursing care of oral and craniomaxillofacial trauma: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: We conducted a literature review on the epidemiology and emergency nursing care of oral and craniomaxillofacial trauma in order to facilitate rescue and care planning. Traumatic accidents alter oral and craniomaxillofacial anatomy and physiology, resulting in craniomaxillofacial scars and deformities, temporomandibular disorders, and oromandibular dysfunction. Such trauma affects speech, chewing, and eating; results in long hospitalization and burdensome healthcare expenses; and in severe cases may lead to potentially life-threatening complications such as respiratory

Global epidemiology of Duchenne muscular dystrophy: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a rare disorder caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis of global DMD epidemiology is not available. This study aimed to estimate the global overall and birth prevalence of DMD through an updated systematic review of the literature. METHODS: MEDLINE and EMBASE databases were searched for original research articles on the epidemiology of DMD from inception until 1st October 2019. Studies were included if they were original observational research articles written in English, reporting DMD prevalenc

Can sputum collection practices for tuberculosis improve laboratory diagnosis of pneumonic plague in developing countries?

Africa reports 90% of human plague cases yet no guidelines currently exist for the safe and accurate collection of sputum from patients with suspected pneumonic plague. Using existing tuberculosis guidelines as a model and in conjunction with epidemiological and clinical features of pneumonic plague, the authors describe the importance of formal guidelines to enhance sputum collection practices and improve safety in developing countries. A model for suggested guidelines is given.

Epidemiology of Traumatic and Nontraumatic Spinal Cord Injury: Impact of Demographic Changes and Regional Differences.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) remains a major cause of disability worldwide, with distinct epidemiologic patterns between traumatic (TSCI) and nontraumatic SCI (NTSCI). Recent demographic shifts, particularly population aging, have led to a growing proportion of NTSCI, largely driven by degenerative and neoplastic conditions. Regional differences are substantial, with low-income and middle-income countries still facing a high burden of trauma-related injuries. Early diagnosis and timely surgical intervention, are critical for improving outcomes. In parallel, long-term care models and prevention str

Scrapie and chronic wasting disease.

Scrapie and CWD share many features. There are marked similarities in the clinical presentations, the lesions, and the pathogenesis of these diseases, and some similarities in the epidemiology. Extrapolation from the scrapie model of TSE disease to CWD--which occurs in three different species, and should not be considered to be uniform in their response--may be erroneous, however. Such differences may influence diagnostics (e.g., the amount and distribution of PrPC in these different species), pathogenesis (e.g., the influence of genetics on susceptibility and resistance), and epidemiology (e.

Oral Dysbiosis and Neuroinflammation: Implications for Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Mood Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence indicates that oral microbiome dysbiosis contributes to systemic inflammation, immune activation, and neural dysfunction. These processes may influence the onset and progression of major neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. This review integrates clinical, epidemiological, and mechanistic findings linking periodontal pathogens and oral microbial imbalance to Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), depression, and anxiety. METHODS: A narrative review was conducted using PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar to identify

Cold Climate and Alzheimer's Disease: A Narrative Review of Biomedical and Environmental Mechanisms.

Emerging evidence suggests that exposure to cold environments may influence Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis through interconnected vascular, inflammatory, metabolic, and thermoregulatory mechanisms. Aging impairs physiological resilience to cold stress, which may exacerbate neurodegenerative processes in vulnerable individuals. This narrative review summarizes findings from epidemiological, mechanistic, and interventional studies on the relationship between cold exposure and AD. This article is a narrative review informed by a structured literature search conducted in PubMed and Scopus d

Young minds in distress: Exploring the global rise in youth mental health diagnoses.

Adolescence represents a critical neurobiological period marked by a developmental "mismatch" between early-maturing limbic systems and the later-maturing prefrontal cortex, conferring heightened vulnerability to the onset of psychiatric disorders. This review synthesizes global epidemiological trends, differentiates true increases in morbidity from diagnostic inflation, and integrates evidence-based intervention strategies. In high-income countries, youth depression, suicide mortality, and self-harm have risen substantially, supported by objective indicators of illness severity that extend be

Beyond Compensation: Hyperinsulinemia as an Early Driver of Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Syndrome.

Background. Cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome encompasses obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease. Insulin resistance has traditionally been considered the primary driver, with hyperinsulinemia viewed as a compensatory response. However, emerging evidence suggests that hyperinsulinemia may precede insulin resistance in specific phenotypes and contribute to early disease mechanisms. Methods. We conducted a narrative review of the role of hyperinsulinemia in CKM syndrome. Literature searches were performed in PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus th

The prevalence of orthostatic intolerance, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome and orthostatic hypotension in post-acute sequelae of COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in over 776 million confirmed cases worldwide, with post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 now recognized as a significant public health concern. Autonomic dysfunction-including orthostatic intolerance (OI), postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), and orthostatic hypotension (OH)-constitutes a major complication of post-acute sequelae of COVID-19. However, reliable epidemiological estimates remain scarce. As a result, we aim to provide the first global prevalence estimates of autonomic dysfunction in post-acute sequelae of COVID-19. Congenital Upper Airway Malformations and Malacia in Infancy: Population-Based Prevalence, Sex Differences, and Trends in Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Congenital upper airway malformations and malacia are important causes of respiratory morbidity in early infancy, yet population-based epidemiological data remain scarce, particularly in Latin America. Most available estimates derive from single-centre cohorts, limiting generalizability and health system planning. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide, retrospective, population-based study using Colombia's administrative healthcare database (RIPS). We identified healthcare encounters coded with ICD-10 diagnoses corresponding to congenital upper airway malformations and malacia among

Feline sporotrichosis hotspots during a period of declining notifications: A surveillance-sensitive analysis in hyperendemic Rio de Janeiro.

In hyperendemic settings, a reduction in notification curves may reflect that surveillance capacity is deteriorating rather than indicating epidemiological improvement; this distinction has direct consequences for disease control. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where cat-transmitted sporotrichosis has persisted for decades, provides a suitable setting to examine whether a decrease in reported cases is accompanied by persistent spatiotemporal clustering. In this ecological study, laboratory-confirmed notifications of feline sporotrichosis from 2017 to 2024 and stratified by administrative region were

Impact of varicella vaccination on the epidemiology of herpes zoster and postherpetic neuralgia: a narrative review.

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) establishes lifelong latency following primary infection and can reactivate later in life to cause herpes zoster (HZ) and its debilitating complication postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). The implementation of varicella vaccinations has profoundly altered the epidemiological landscape of VZV. This narrative review examines the current literature to evaluate the impact of these vaccination programs on the incidence of HZ and PHN. Early mathematical models based on the "exogenous boosting" hypothesis predicted a substantial surge in adult HZ due to reduced exposure to circ

Impact of seasonal changes on the epidemiology of Lassa fever in a state in North Central, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Lassa fever is a recurrent public health threat in Nigeria, particularly in endemic regions such as Kogi State. Its transmission is closely tied to environmental and seasonal dynamics, especially those influencing rodent populations. Understanding these climatic influences is essential for strengthening disease surveillance and implementing timely interventions. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using retrospective epidemiological and climatic data from 2019 to 2024. Confirmed Lassa fever case records and meteorological variables (temperature, rainfall, and

Mechanisms Linking Obesity, Insulin Resistance, and Alzheimer's Disease: Effects of Polyphenols and Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive cognitive decline, memory loss, and behavioral changes. It poses a significant global health challenge. AD is associated with the accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) in the brain, along with chronic inflammation, dysfunctional neurons, and synapse loss. While the prevalence of AD continues to rise, the current FDA-approved drugs offer only limited effectiveness. Emerging evidence suggests that obesity, insulin resistance (IR), and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) a

Global burden of gastroesophageal reflux disease, 1990-2021, with projections to 2040: an update from the global burden of disease study 2021.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) imposes substantial global burden. Its recent trends and long-term projections have not been reassessed since the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 cycle. Using GBD 2021 data, incident and prevalent cases, years lived with disability, and age-standardized rates (ASRs) were estimated for 204 countries from 1990 to 2021. Decomposition analysis categorized changes into population aging, population growth, and epidemiological change. Projections to 2040 used a Bayesian age-period-cohort model, with Nordpred and ARIMA used to assess robustness. From 1990 to

Predictive and interpretable machine learning for COVID-19 resurgences: the role of SARS-CoV-2 variants in the post-pandemic era.

BACKGROUND: Traditional COVID-19 forecasting often misses the rapid dynamics of viral competition, limiting timely ublic health responses. This study demonstrates the value of incorporating SARS-CoV-2 variant data into recurrent neural networks, using an interpretable, data-driven approach to improve accuracy in the current pandemic phase. METHODS: We validated our approach on post-pandemic data (2022–2025) from New York City and the United Kingdom, integrating epidemiological time series with genomic surveillance of variants. We implemented and compared several neural network structures, with
