Potassium iodide in erythema nodosum and other erythematous dermatoses.

Potassium iodide therapy has a history of more than 150 years. It has been tried in many diseases in the past. However, with the development of modern medications indications for potassium iodide therapy are very limited. It is well known that potassium iodide is the drug of choice for sporotrichosis. Subacute nodular migratory panniculitis and erythema nodosum have also been treated successfully with this drug.

Acute Epstein-Barr virus infection resembling cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.

Primary, acute Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is associated with a variety of cutaneous eruptions, including the viral exanthem of infectious mononucleosis and erythema multiforme. Latent, chronic EBV infection can rarely result in development of lymphoproliferative disorders with cutaneous manifestations; however, these disorders do not arise from primary infection. In this report, we present a case of primary, acute EBV infection presenting with histopathologic features closely mimicking aggressive cytotoxic cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.

[Skin manifestations of graft-versus-host reaction following bone marrow transplantation].

We review the cutaneous manifestations of acute and chronic graft versus host disease (GvHD). Acute GvHD is characterized by initial itching, pain on pressure and erythema which begins on posterior auricular skin, palms and soles. The disease evolves into a typical but nonspecific maculopapular rash. Confluent rashes and follicular erythema may occur. Erosive oral lesions usually develop. The most severe variant of GvHD is toxic epidermal necrolysis, which often has a fatal outcome. The onset of chronic GvHD usually occurs more than 100 days after bone marrow transplantation and may be precede

A review of important skin disorders occurring in the posttransplantation patient.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation continues to be the mainstay of treatment for many hematologic dyscrasias and malignancies, including acute leukemias, lymphomas, and aplastic anemia. There can be significant complications, however, and often these complications are manifested in the skin as an eruption. Common among these are acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis, eruption of lymphocyte recovery, staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome, morbiliform drug eruptions, infections, and toxic erythema of chemotherapy…

Influenza-Associated Urticaria Multiforme Mimicking Serum Sickness in a Toddler: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Urticaria multiforme (UM) is a benign hypersensitivity reaction of early childhood characterized by transient annular urticarial plaques with dusky centers and acral edema. Although self-limited, UM is frequently misdiagnosed as serum sickness-like reaction (SSLR), erythema multiforme (EM), or urticarial vasculitis due to overlapping features such as fever, edema, and inflammatory laboratory abnormalities. Diagnostic uncertainty may therefore lead to extensive investigations, hospitalization, and unnecessary systemic corticosteroid therapy. A three-year-old male with a history of atopic dermat…

Exanthems and drug reactions.

BACKGROUND: Drug reactions are a common cause of rashes and can vary from brief, mildly annoying, self limiting rashes to severe conditions involving multiple organ systems. OBJECTIVE: This article outlines an approach to exanthems that may be related to drug reactions and details appropriate management. DISCUSSION: Rashes related to drug reactions are both nonallergic and allergic. Nonallergic rashes are usually predictable and may be avoidable. Allergic rashes include morbilliform erythema, urticaria and angioedema, erythema multiforme and vasculitic rashes. The vast majority of cases are …

In the pursuit of classifying severe cutaneous adverse reactions.

We suggest adding an additional type of lesion to the existing 4 types of lesions of the erythema multiforme (EM), Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), namely "flat typical target" and call the original typical targets "raised typical target." The EM group would consist of raised typical targets and raised atypical targets, similar to the original definition, and the SJS/TEN group would consist of flat typical targets, flat atypical targets and macules with or without blisters. In our proposed modified classification (Table 1), all the lesions that are found in…
