Paternal preconception exercise and sperm epigenetic mechanisms: a systematic review on offspring health.

INTRODUCTION: Paternal biology before conception can influence offspring health beyond DNA sequence inheritance. Paternal exercise is a modifiable exposure that can remodel the male germline epigenome through DNA methylation, histone modifications, and small non-coding RNAs, potentially affecting offspring development and metabolism. METHODS: This systematic review searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, and EMBASE without year restrictions. Experimental animal studies were eligible if sires exercised before conception and reported sperm or offspring epigenetic outcomes along

Rethinking revascularization in patients with stable angina.

Traditional and current perception for benefit of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is that patients with stable angina will obtain s … ent explained by placebo effects or transient non-cardiac causes of chest pain. However, the chosen exercise tolerance improvement may have been too optimistic in a population with good functional capacity. Also PCI was anatomic and not functional driven, and follow-up duration may have been to short to wear off the placebo effect. While the evidence is not sufficie …

Hyperthermia and voluntary exhaustion: integrating models and future challenges.

Over the past decade, research interest has risen on the direct effects of temperature on exercise capacity and tolerance, particular in the heat. Two major paradigms have been proposed for how hyperthermia may contribute to voluntary fatigue during exercise in the heat. One suggests that voluntary exhaustion occurs upon the approach or attainment of a critical internal temperature through impairment in a variety of physiological systems. An alternate perspective proposes that thermal inputs modulate the regulation of self-paced workload to minimize heat storage. This review seeks to summarize

Medical aspects of sport diving.

Medical issues in sport diving include illnesses that are caused by diving, and medical disorders that compromise safety. Cerebral air embol … divers can return to diving after myocardial infarction or bypass surgery if they demonstrate good exercise tolerance and no ischemia on a graded exercise test, which simulates the physical activity needed for safe diving.

A comparison of digoxin, diltiazem and their combination in the treatment of atrial fibrillation.

Fourteen patients (four females) with chronic atrial fibrillation were entered into a randomized, double-blind crossover study to compare th … pm), but there was no evidence that this reduction in ventricular rate was associated with improved exercise tolerance. The results suggest that further reduction of the rapid ventricular rates seen in digitalized patients with AF by the use of diltiazem does not appear to be of benefit in the majority of patients.

The influence of physical training on glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, and lipid and lipoprotein concentrations in middle-aged hypertriglyceridaemic, carbohydrate intolerant men.

The effects of 9 weeks of moderate intensity exercise training while on a weight-maintaining diet were studied in 19 untrained middle-aged, hypertriglyceridaemic, carbohydrate intolerant men. Initial mean maximum oxygen consumption was low (29.7 +/- 1.0 ml.min-1.kg-1; mean +/- SEM) and improved (34.2 +/- 1.4 ml.min-1.kg-1, p less than 0.01) with exercise training. Fasting glucose, insulin, lipid and lipoprotein concentrations did not change. While the abnormal glucose response to oral glucose did not change with training, insulin concentrations were significantly (p less than 0.05) lower at 90

Exercise-induced hypercapnia in the horse.

The effects of exercise intensity and duration on blood gases in thoroughbred horses were studied to characterize the apparent exercise-induced failure in pulmonary gas exchange that occurs in these animals. In response to 2 min of exercise, arterial CO2 tension (PaCO2) decreased in mild and moderate exercise, returned to normocapnic levels in moderate to heavy exercise, and rose 5-10 Torr above resting values during very heavy exercise when CO2 production (VCO2) exceeded 20 times the resting value, and mixed venous CO2 tension approximated 140 Torr. Exercise-induced hypoxemia occurred at the

Low-load Resistance Exercise with Perceptually Primed Practical Blood Flow Restriction Induces Similar Motor Performance Fatigue, Physiological Changes, and Perceptual Responses Compared to Traditional Blood Flow Restriction in Males and Females.

In the recent past, practical blood flow restriction (pBFR) using non-pneumatic, usually elastic cuffs has been established as a cost-effective alternative to traditional blood flow restriction (BFR) using pneumatic cuffs, especially for training in large groups. This study investigated whether low-load resistance exercise with perceptually primed pBFR using an elastic knee wrap is suitable to induce similar motor performance fatigue as well as physiological and perceptual responses compared to traditional BFR using a pneumatic nylon cuff in males and females. In a randomized, counterbalanced

Greater endurance capacity and improved dyspnoea with acute oxygen supplementation in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients without resting hypoxaemia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Supplemental oxygen is commonly prescribed in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), although its bene … nts with IPF, breathing oxygen at FiO2 of 0.50 at rest seems safe. During exercise, oxygen improves exercise tolerance, alleviates exercise-induced hypoxaemia and reduces dyspnoea. A potential relationship between oxygen administration and improved skeletal muscle metabolism should be explored in future studies.
