OBJECTIVES: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder of gut-brain interaction with an unknown precise etiology. Intricate mechanisms underlying the disruption of bidirectional communication between the brain and the gut may influence the severity of symptoms as well as the response to self-management interventions. Management of IBS can be particularly challenging due to recurrent and resistant symptoms to therapeutic approaches. The present study aimed to evaluate the role of nurse-led self-management support on symptom management and self-reported outcomes in people with IBS.

In recent decades, it has become clear that the gut is more than just a digestive organ; it also functions as an immune organ with regulatory capabilities and acts as a "second brain" that influences brain function due to the presence and regulatory roles of the gut microbiota (GM). The GM is a crucial component of its host and significantly impacts human health. Dysbiosis, or microbial imbalance, has been closely linked to various diseases, including gastrointestinal, neurological, psychiatric, and metabolic disorders. The aim of this narrative review is to highlight the roles of the GM in ma

UNLABELLED: Ghrelin is a novel gastric peptide which has orexigenic and adipogenic properties. Circulating ghrelin concentrations are influenced by nutritional status and, probably, regulate food intake and body weight. Obesity is a common feature in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). To investigate the relationship of circulating ghrelin concentrations to the hormonal and metabolic features of PCOS women, plasma ghrelin and several hormone concentrations were evaluated in thirty-three women with PCOS and in thirty-two healthy women matched for age and body mass index (BMI). Plasma g

Twenty three adults ingested 203Pb as lead acetate on the 12th hour of a 19 h fast. Retention measured 7 days later in a whole-body counter was 61% and whole-body turnover rates suggested that initial uptake had been considerably greater. Balanced meals eaten with 203Pb reduced lead uptake to 4% and the influence of the food lasted for up to 3 h. The effects of phytate, ethylene-diaminetetra acetate (EDTA), caffeine, alcohol, glucose, a liquid meal and a light snack were tested separately with intermediate results. The effect of a meal was probably largely due to its content of calcium and pho

Parental stress can influence stress responses in offspring. In C. elegans neurons, proteostress can induce the extrusion of aggregates and organelles in large extracellular vesicles called exophers. Under mild proteostress, ~20% of ALMR neurons produce exophers. We tested if the high exopher production trait is heritable. Offspring of parents that produced exophers (both under standard growth conditions and after 6-hour food withdrawal) displayed similar exopher production levels compared to offspring of parents that didn't produce ALMR exophers and the exopher leve

Recent epidemiologic studies and meta-analysis with triglyceride levels are revealing that hypertriglyceridemia is associated with coronary heart diseases independent of other coronary risk factors, although the direct effect of serum triglycerides to atherosclerotic lesion is still uncertain. Multiple genetic and environmental factors from familial hyperlipidemia to food and alcohol intake are implicated in elevating triglycerides. Especially, a number of investigators demonstrated a relationship between atherosclerotic diseases and postprandial hyperlipidemia, which may lead to nonfasting TG

Several types of unit activity were detected in the rat pineal gland during a 48-hour water and food deprivation. The unit activity rate in stress was higher by 4-6 times than in intact rats (due to an increase in the "fast" cells number and switching of some cells from regular to a burst type of activity). Electrical stimulation of olfactory epithelium decreased the unit activity rate in the most active pinealocytes. The daytime increase in the pineal electrical activity reflects an intensification of secretion of the protein/peptide substances and, probably, serotonin but not the melatonin.

The endocrine function of the pancreas consists of the promotion of storage of nutritive substances after meals through the liberation of insulin and to guarantee the mobilization of this food energy through the secretion of glucagon during fasting. Increased hormone production may result from tumors of the islet cells (insulin: insulinoma; glucagon: glucagonoma; gastrin: Zollinger-Ellison syndrome). An absolute or relative insulin deficiency is a characteristic of diabetes mellitus, in which a relative hyperglucagonemia is also of possible pathophysiological significance. This increased secre

Sulfatase 2 (SULF2) is a heparan sulfate editing enzyme that regulates the milieu of growth factors and cytokines involved in a variety of cellular processes. We used a murine model of diet-induced steatohepatitis to assess the effect of SULF2 downregulation on the development of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and liver fibrosis. Wild-type B6;129 mice (WT) and Sulf2-knockout B6;129P2-SULF2Gt(PST111)Byg mice (Sulf2-KO) were fed a fast-food diet (FFD) rich in saturated fats, cholesterol, and fructose or a standard chow diet (SC) ad libitum for 9 mo. WT mice on FFD showed a threefold increas

INTRODUCTION: Many molecular epidemiology studies focusing on high prevalent diseases, such as metabolic disorders and cancer, investigate metabolic and hormonal markers. In general, sampling for these markers can occur at any time-point during the day or after an overnight fast. However, environmental factors, such as light exposure and food intake might affect the levels of these markers, since they provide input for the internal time-keeping system. When diurnal variation is larger than the inter-individual variation, time of day should be taken into account. Importantly, heterogeneity in d

BACKGROUND: There is a general belief that gastro-oesophageal reflux increases after meals and especially following a rapid intake.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of rapid vs. slow food intake on gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-six GORD patients with heartburn and / or acid regurgitation once a week or more often common were included in this study. Participants were asked to eat the same standard meal within either 5 or 30 minutes under observation in a random order on 2 consecutive days. A total of 28 hours of recording were obtained by int

Two studies were performed to examine the influence of fasting and food intake on the absorption and retention of nickel added to drinking water and to determine if nickel sensitization played any role in this regard. First, eight nonallergic male volunteers fasted overnight before being given nickel in drinking water (12 micrograms Ni/kg) and, at different time intervals, standardized 1400-kJ portions of scrambled eggs. When nickel was ingested in water 30 min or 1 h prior to the meal, peak nickel concentrations in serum occurred 1 h after the water intake, and the peak was 13-fold higher tha

BACKGROUND: Cancer promotes muscle wasting through an imbalance in the tightly regulated protein synthesis and degradation processes. An array of intracellular signalling pathways, including mTORC1 and AMPK, regulate protein synthesis, and these pathways are responsive to the muscle's microenvironment and systemic stimuli. Although feeding and fasting are established systemic regulators of muscle mTORC1 and protein synthesis, the cancer environment's impact on these responses during cachexia development is poorly understood. Although the IL-6 cytokine family has been widely investigated as a d
