Characterization of the aluminum and beryllium fluoride species bound to F-actin and microtubules at the site of the gamma-phosphate of the nucleotide.

Aluminum fluoride and beryllium fluoride complexes have previously been shown to bind tightly to F-ADP-actin and GDP-microtubules in competition with Pi and to mimic the XDP-Pi transient state of the polymerization. The structure of the bound complexes is investigated here in further detail. Using a fluoride ion-specific electrode, the number of fluoride atoms per aluminum or beryllium atom in the bound complex could be determined. The results indicate that AIF-4 and either BeF2(OH)-.H2O or BeF3-.H2O are the tightly bound species in both F-actin and microtubules. The dependences of the binding

Fluoride complexes of aluminium or beryllium act on G-proteins as reversibly bound analogues of the gamma phosphate of GTP.

Fluoride activation of G proteins requires the presence of aluminium or beryllium and it has been suggested that AIF4- acts as an analogue of the gamma-phosphate of GTP in the nucleotide site. We have investigated the action of AIF4- or of BeF3- on transducin (T), the G protein of the retinal rods, either indirectly through the activation of cGMP phosphodiesterase, or more directly through their effects on the conformation of transducin itself. In the presence of AIF4- or BeF3-, purified T alpha subunit of transducin activates purified cyclic GMP phosphodiesterase (PDE) in the absence of photo

[Fluoride osteosis of hydro-telluric origin in a female patient with renal insufficiency. Apropos of a case with histomorphometric analysis].

We report a case of fluorosis due to high water and soil contents in a 23-year-old Algerian woman. The condition, which is infrequent at this age, was promoted by chronic renal failure due to a congenital renal malformation. Roentgenograms showing osteosis with increased bone density were suggestive of fluorosis rather than renal osteodystrophy. Bone tissue fluoride assay confirmed fluorosis. Histomorphometric analysis of bone biopsy specimens showed mixed lesions: major osteocondensation due to bone fluorosis and morphologic and dynamic osteomalacia related to the chronic renal failure.

Four years of monthly professional toothcleaning and topical fluoride application in Brazilian schoolchildren. I. Effect on gingivitis.

The effect on gingivitis of monthly professional toothcleaning, without oral hygiene instruction, was evaluated in 103, 7- to 11-year-old Brazilian children. Plaque and gingivitis (PlI and GI) were recorded initially and after 1, 2, 3 and 4 years. The baseline examination showed a similar high level of plaque (PlI approximately 1.55) and low level of gingivitis (GI approximately 0.32) around permanent teeth of both test and control groups. The test children were given monthly professional toothcleaning followed by topical application of fluoride gel (APF), totaling 32 sessions. At all annual f

Red-light photoredox catalysis with bridged fluorescein derivatives: mechanistic insights and application to fluoride-responsive photopolymerization.

We demonstrated bridged fluoresceins (BFLs) as a class of metal-free red-light photocatalysts that feature structurally tunable and switchable activity in aqueous solutions. Mechanistic studies using photoinitiated radical polymerizations under controlled atmospheres revealed that BFLs engage in efficient oxidative and reductive quenching cycles with co-initiators proceeding through excitation, intersystem crossing, single-electron transfer, and regeneration processes. Notably, molecular oxygen plays dual roles: (i) serving as a co-initiator through O2-derived reactive oxygen species that init

Japan's Four-Decade Natural Experiment in Early Childhood Caries: A Perspective on Prevention Pathways Beyond Fluoride.

Japan's marked decline in early childhood caries (ECC) has been documented through uniquely comprehensive national dental examinations, with standardized population surveys conducted continuously for more than four decades. This perspective discusses how Japan achieved sustained reduction in ECC despite the absence of community water fluoridation and historically limited use of toothpaste with effective fluoride concentration in infancy. Drawing on national surveillance and epidemiological evidence, I consider how changes in dietary patterns, caregiver practices, oral health behaviours, and br…

Effect of ammonia-free silver fluoride application on the resin-dentin interface subjected to an in situ cariogenic challenge.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate whether an ammonia-free silver diamine fluoride solution can prevent adhesive interface degradation when subjected to an in situ cariogenic challenge (CC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-six sound human molars were sectioned to obtain flat mid-coronal dentin surfaces, and half of the specimens received ammonia-free silver diamine fluoride pretreatment. Specimens were then restored using two universal adhesives (Single Bond Universal, SBU; and Zipbond, ZIP) applied with either the etch-and-rinse (ER) or self-etch (SE) strategy. Composite buildups were const

Equity or Two-Tier Care? Guardrails for Silver Diamine Fluoride and Delegated Early Childhood Caries Pathways.

Early childhood caries (ECC) is a complex, multifactorial disease shaped by biofilm ecology, host susceptibility, diet and behaviors, and structural determinants of health. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is an effective non-restorative option for arresting cavitated lesions in many settings and can support access when definitive care is delayed. However, translating short-horizon "arrest" outcomes into broad policy claims-that SDF-first, delegated pathways can substitute for dentist-led diagnosis and comprehensive rehabilitation-risks institutionalizing a two-tier standard of care for children

Morphology-Controlled γ-Alumina Adsorbents: Fluoride Removal Performance and Cyclic Regeneration Stability in Aqueous Media.

Excessive fluoride in groundwater and industrial wastewater poses serious risks to human health. Although commercial γ-alumina is a low-cost adsorbent recommended for defluoridation, its limited adsorption capacity and poor regeneration stability hinder its practical application. In this work, three template-free γ-alumina materials with distinct morphologies (nanosheets, rhombic flakes, and nanofibers) were synthesized by a mild hydrothermal method and systematically compared with commercial granular γ-alumina. To isolate the effect of morphology, all four γ-alumina adsorbents were prepared w…

Elemental changes in tooth hard tissues during demineralization and fluoride-induced remineralization: an SEM-EDX study.

BACKGROUND: Tooth enamel and dentin are the most highly mineralized tissues in the human body, and their structural stability depends on the balanced content of calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and fluoride (F). Demineralization leads to the loss of these ions, weakening the tooth structure and increasing susceptibility to caries. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate elemental changes in Ca, P, and F in intact, demineralized, and remineralized teeth across the enamel, dentin-enamel junction and peripulpal dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 45 extracted human teeth were longitudinally sectioned t

Hydrated Electron-Driven Defluorination Coupled With In Situ Mineralization: An Integrated Approach for SF6 Degradation and Fluoride Immobilization.

The extreme atmospheric persistence of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), coupled with its high global warming potential, necessitates effective degradation strategies. Herein, we report a reduction-precipitation platform that simultaneously achieves SF6 defluorination and in situ fluoride immobilization. Hydrated electrons ( e aq - $e_{aq}^{-}$ ) generated via photoreduction drive the cleavage of SF bonds, achieving enhanced SF6 degradation. Crucially, in situ precipitation with calcium salts directly converts the released fluoride ions into fluorite (CaF2), eliminating secondary pollution. XRD
