Metabolic fate of chromium compounds. I. Comparative behavior of chromium in rat administered with Na251CrO4 and 51CrCl3.

Comparative metabolic fate of labelled chromium chloride and sodium chromate and interaction of these compounds in the rat liver and blood were investigated after their oral and intravenous administration. Gastrointestinal absorption of both compounds was below 1% of the oral dose, but trivalent chromium showed higher radioactivity than the hexavalent form in rats (biological half-life: CrCl3 91.79 days, Na2CrO4 22.24 days). The higher residual activity of the trivalent chromium was also observed after intravenous administration. Both forms of chromium were excreted more in the urine via the k…

Limitations of using citrulline levels as a marker of gastrointestinal function in patients with chronic intestinal failure.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Citrulline (CIT), produced almost exclusively by enterocytes, is a potentially sensitive biomarker of small intestine absorptive function in patients with chronic intestinal failure (CIF). The aim of this study was to evaluate the utility and limitations of plasma citrulline (CIT) level measurements in assessing gastrointestinal function in patients with chronic intestinal failure (CIF), including a comparison between patients with and without cancer. METHODS: The study was conducted among 56 CIF patients. The study of the profile of plasma CIT was performed by tandem mas

Research progress on the relationship between Helicobacter pylori infection and iron deficiency anemia.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection affects around half of the global population and is a globally highly prevalent pathogen that is closely linked not only to gastrointestinal diseases such as chronic atrophic gastritis, functional dyspepsia and peptic ulcer but also to the development and progression of a variety of extra-gastrointestinal diseases. Numerous studies have shown the correlation between H. pylori infection and iron-deficiency anemia (IDA). The prevalence of H. pylori infection is higher in individuals with IDA, and the hemoglobin level of patients with IDA can be increased

Deleterious impacts of Western diet on jejunum function and health are reversible.

The goal of this study was to determine whether the influence of a high-fat high-sugar diet (Western diet) on intestinal function and health was reversible. We measured transepithelial short circuit current (Isc), across freshly isolated segments of jejunum from male C57Bl/6J mice randomly assigned to one of the following groups for the study duration: high-fat high-sugar diet for 24 wk (HFHS), HFHS diet for 12 wk then switched to standard chow and water for a further 12 wk (Std), and lean controls (standard chow and water for 24 wk). At the completion of the study, segments of jejunum were fr

Clinical Consequences of Delayed Gastric Emptying With GLP-1 Receptor Agonists and Tirzepatide.

CONTEXT: Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists (RAs) are established therapeutics for type 2 diabetes and obesity. Among other mechanisms, they slow gastric emptying and motility of the small intestine. This helps to limit postprandial glycemic excursions and reduce chylomicron formation and triglyceride absorption. Conversely, motility effects may have detrimental consequences, eg, retained gastric contents at endoscopy or general anesthesia, potentially complicated by pulmonary aspiration or bowel obstruction. DATA ACQUISITION: We searched the PubMed database for studies involvi

Correlation between Alzheimer's Disease and Gastrointestinal Tract Disorders.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia globally. The pathogenesis is multifactorial and includes deposition of amyloid-β in the central nervous system, presence of intraneuronal neurofibrillary tangles and a decreased amount of synapses. It remains uncertain what causes the progression of the disease. Nowadays, it is suggested that the brain is connected to the gastrointestinal tract, especially the enteric nervous system and gut microbiome. Studies have found a positive association between AD and gastrointestinal diseases such as periodontitis, Helicobacter pylori infection,

Assessment of Amniotic Fluid Volume in Pregnancy.

Amniotic fluid (AF) is an integral part of the fetal environment and is essential for fetal growth and development. Pathways of AF recirculation include the fetal lungs, swallowing, absorption through the fetal gastrointestinal tract, excretion through fetal urine production, and movement. In addition to being a marker for fetal health, adequate AF is necessary for fetal lung development, growth, and movement. The role of diagnostic imaging is to provide a detailed fetal survey, placental evaluation, and clinical correlation with maternal conditions to help identify causes of AF abnormalities

Alterations in GLP-1 and PYY release with aging and body mass in the human gut.

The lining of our intestinal surface contains an array of hormone-producing cells that are collectively our bodies' largest endocrine cell reservoir. These "enteroendocrine" (EE) cells reside amongst the billions of absorptive epithelial and other cell types that line our gastrointestinal tract and can sense and respond to the ever-changing internal environment in our gut. EE cells release an array of important signalling molecules that can act as hormones, including glucagon-like peptide (GLP-1) and peptide YY (PYY) which are co-secreted from L cells. While much is known about the effects of

Identification of zinc-chelating pumpkin seed (Cucurbita pepo L.) peptides and in vitro transport of peptide-zinc chelates.

In this study, pumpkin seeds peptide was purified, characterized, and evaluated for their zinc-chelating capability, as well as in vitro bioaccessibility and transportation. Raw pumpkin seeds protein hydrolysate (PSPH) was produced by papain hydrolysis. The peptide fractions with the highest zinc-chelating abilities were purified using immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC) followed by gel filtration chromatography (GF). Eight peptides were identified, two of which with the lowest molecular weights were synthesized (RPKHPLK and RPKHPLSHDL) for determining potential bioaccessibility a

Electrosprayed chitosan-coated alginate-pectin beads as potential system for colon-targeted delivery of ellagic acid.

BACKGROUND: Ellagic acid (EA), a potent dietary antioxidant, has limited bioavailability owing to its rapid absorption in the stomach and small intestine, and EA is transformed to more bioavailable compounds - urolithins - in the colon. An encapsulation system that sustains the release of EA in the gastrointestinal system and delivers more EA into the colon could improve the oral bioavailability of EA. Electrosprayed EA-loaded alginate-pectin beads were produced and coated with low- (LC) and high-molecular-weight chitosan (HC). The EA release from uncoated and coated beads under simulated gast

Congenital short bowel syndrome: systematic review of a rare condition.

BACKGROUND: Congenital short bowel syndrome (CSBS) is a rare gastrointestinal disorder caused by intrauterine reduction of small bowel length whose etiology is still unknown. Chronic diarrhea, vomiting, and failure to thrive are the most important complications, arising from less absorptive intestinal surface. This review examines clinical features and outcomes of CSBS patients. METHODS: A PubMed and EMBASE research on CSBS was performed. Inclusion criterion was congenital short bowel diagnosis in a range of ages between 33 weeks of gestational age and 15 years old (IQR 38 days). Exclusion cr

Gut microbiota and Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

About two third of the human microbial commensal community, namely the gut microbiota, is hosted by the gastrointestinal tract which represents the largest interface of the organism to the external environment. This microbial community co-evolved in a symbiotic relationship with the human beings. Growing evidence support the notion that the microbiota plays a significant role in maintaining nutritional, metabolic and immunologic homeostasis in the host. Microbiota, beside the expected role in maintaining gastrointestinal homeostasis also exerts metabolic functions in nutrients digestion and ab

Transdermal selegiline.

Although older monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are effective in the treatment of depressive disorders, they are underutilized in clinical practice due to main concerns about interaction with tyramine-containing food, and side effects. Efforts to address these safety issues led to the development of a transdermal formulation of selegiline, called selegiline transdermal system (STS). STS has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of major depression. Transdermal administration of selegiline bypasses gastrointestinal absorption and first-pass metabolis…

Safety evaluation of dietary aluminum.

Aluminum is a nonessential metal to which humans are frequently exposed. Aluminum in the food supply comes from natural sources, water used in food preparation, food ingredients, and utensils used during food preparations. The amount of aluminum in the diet is small, compared with the amount of aluminum in antacids and some buffered analgesics. The healthy human body has effective barriers (skin, lungs, gastrointestinal tract) to reduce the systemic absorption of aluminum ingested from water, foods, drugs, and air. The small amount of aluminum (<1%) that is systemically absorbed is excreted pr

Pharmacokinetic Characterization of the Gastrointestinal Acute Radiation Syndrome Mitigator YK-4-250 in Male and Female Mice Under Non-Irradiated and Partial Body Irradiation Conditions.

The therapeutic evaluation of novel small-molecule candidates requires a comprehensive understanding of their pharmacokinetic (PK) profiles under both baseline physiological conditions and pathophysiological stress states, such as radiation exposure. This study evaluates YK-4-250, a long acting Tempol-conjugated angiotensin receptor blocker (TCARB) being developed to treat gastrointestinal acute radiation syndrome (GI-ARS). Specifically, the study characterizes YK-4-250's non-compartmental PK profile following oral administration of 20 and 40 mg/kg doses to male and female, non-irradiated and

[Malnutrition in Inflammatory Bowel Disease].

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), like ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), are a group of conditions with unknown etiology. Their pathogenesis is based on the interaction between environmental, genetic, and immunological factors, as well as alterations in the gut microbiota. Although malnutrition can occur in any type of IBD, its prevalence, which fluctuates among 13.3 and 99.9%, it could be greater in CD due to more extensive involvement of the gastrointestinal tract; it may worsen depending on the activity, duration, and extent of the inflammatory response. The causes associat

Tropical sprue: a forgotten entity.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Tropical sprue, once a major cause of malabsorption syndromes, is declining in prevalence. As a consequence of its rarity, and the absence of specific diagnostic tests, diagnosis of this condition is often delayed or missed. The purpose of this review is to draw attention again to this condition and to its overlap with postinfectious irritable bowel syndrome. RECENT FINDINGS: Sporadic case reports of diagnosis in travelers to endemic countries as well as reports of its continuing occurrence in endemic countries indicate the need for continuing diagnosis of the disease. Most
