"You get to know the people and whether they're talking sense or not": Negotiating trust on health-related forums.

The internet is increasingly being used as a source of health advice and information by individuals with long term conditions (LTCs). Specifically, online forums allow people to interact with others with similar conditions. However, it is not clear how online health information is assessed by those with LTCs. This study aims to address this gap by exploring how individuals with contested and uncontested LTCs utilise internet forums. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 participants with ME/CFS and 21 participants with type 1 and 2 diabetes and analysed using thematic analysis. Par

Using UV photoaged photography to better understand Western Australian teenagers' attitudes towards adopting sun-protective behaviors.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine whether the viewing of a personal photoaged photograph had the capacity to alter Western Australian teenagers' pro-tanning attitudes. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with fifteen teenagers. FINDINGS: The teenagers' pro-tanning attitudes prior to viewing their photoaged photograph are encapsulated in the study's central theme: 'You've got to look after your skin and use sunscreen, but I always forget!'. Post-viewing their photoaged facial image many teenagers reiterated their intentions to adopt (when they remembered) skin-protective

Qualitative Comparison of Women's Perspectives on the Functions and Benefits of Group and Individual Prenatal Care.

INTRODUCTION: Women's definitions and experiences of the functions and benefits of their routine prenatal care are largely absent from research and public discourse on prenatal care outcomes. This qualitative study aimed to develop a framework of women's prenatal care experiences by comparing the experiences of women in individual and group prenatal care. METHODS: We conducted serial qualitative interviews with racially diverse low-income women receiving individual prenatal care (n = 14) or group prenatal care (n = 15) through pregnancy and the early postpartum period. We completed 42 second-

Stages of change of the readiness to quit smoking among a random sample of minority Arab male smokers in Israel.

BACKGROUND: Despite advanced smoking prevention and cessation policies in many countries, the prevalence of cigarette smoking among indigenous and some ethnic minorities continues to be high. This study examined the stages of change (SOC) of the readiness to quit smoking among Arab men in Israel shortly after new regulations of free-of-charge smoking cessation workshops and subsidized medications were introduced through primary health care clinics. METHODS: We conducted a countrywide study in Israel between 2012-2013. Participants, 735 current smokers; 18-64 years old; were recruited from a s

Adapting an evidence-based HIV behavioral intervention for South African couples.

BACKGROUND: In South Africa, heterosexual couples are at risk for HIV infection and transmission through substance use, gender-based violence and traditional gender roles, and sex risk behaviors such as having multiple partners and unsafe sex. METHODS: To address these interconnected HIV risks among heterosexual couples, we used the ADAPT framework to modify an existing, efficacious women's HIV prevention intervention (the Western Cape Women's Health CoOp) to include components of an evidence-based couple's intervention from the United States (Project Connect) and components from the Men as P

African American women's perspectives on breast cancer: implications for communicating risk of basal-like breast cancer.

African American women suffer a disproportionately high burden of basal-like breast cancer, an aggressive subtype that has no targeted therapy. While epidemiologic research has identified key prevention strategies, little is known about how best to communicate risk to this population. This study explored women's knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes about breast cancer to learn about risk perceptions. Six focus groups were conducted in North Carolina with 57 women (ages 18-49). Age, race (especially perceptions of cancer as a "White disease"), and lack of family history of breast cancer were all s

The provider perception inventory: psychometrics of a scale designed to measure provider stigma about HIV, substance abuse, and MSM behavior.

Nongay identified men who have sex with men and women (NGI MSMW) and who use alcohol and other drugs are a vulnerable, understudied, and undertreated population. Little is known about the stigma faced by this population or about the way that health service providers view and serve these stigmatized clients. The provider perception inventory (PPI) is a 39-item scale that measures health services providers' stigma about HIV/AIDS, substance use, and MSM behavior. The PPI is unique in that it was developed to include service provider stigma targeted at NGI MSMW individuals. PPI was developed throu

The characterization of IL-17A expression in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.

BACKGROUND: Interleukin (IL)-17A, mainly produced by Th17 cells, was previously described as an inflammatory cytokine that induces a profile of proinflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and metalloproteinases. Recent studies have revealed that IL-17 is correlated with inflammatory lung disorders by triggering an accumulation of neutrophils. More recently, we have shown that the expression of IL-17 may be involved in the development of nasal polyps (NPs). Here, we describe the characterization of IL-17 expression in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNPs) from northeast Ch

Problem posing and cultural tailoring: developing an HIV/AIDS health literacy toolkit with the African American community.

The rate of HIV infection among African Americans is disproportionately higher than for other racial groups in the United States. Previous research suggests that low level of health literacy (HL) is an underlying factor to explain racial disparities in the prevalence and incidence of HIV/AIDS. The present research describes a community and university project to develop a culturally tailored HIV/AIDS HL toolkit in the African American community. Paulo Freire's pedagogical philosophy and problem-posing methodology served as the guiding framework throughout the development process. Developing the

Reductions in sexually transmitted infections associated with popular opinion leaders in China in a randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: A community level randomised controlled trial of a Community Popular Opinion Leader (C-POL) intervention to reduce bacterial and viral sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unprotected extramarital sex was carried out over 2 years in five countries. The main study results did not find significant intervention effects. This paper presents a sub-analysis examining the differential intervention impacts among high-risk and low-risk participants in the China site. METHODS: From 2002-2006, 3912 migrant market vendors aged 18 and 49 years were recruited at an urban site in China. Ma

Patient-provider communication and low-income adults: age, race, literacy, and optimism predict communication satisfaction.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether literacy, numeracy, and optimism are related to low-income adults' satisfaction with their healthcare provider's communication skills. METHODS: Low-income adults (N=131) were recruited from seven counties in Indiana through University extension programs. To achieve research triangulation, participants were surveyed and interviewed about their communication satisfaction with health providers. RESULTS: Survey data revealed that four variables significantly predicted satisfaction: age, race, literacy, and optimism. Low-income adults in the current study were more cr

Safer choices 2: rationale, design issues, and baseline results in evaluating school-based health promotion for alternative school students.

BACKGROUND: Students attending 'alternative' high schools form relatively small, highly mobile high-risk populations, presenting challenges for the design and implementation of HIV-, other STI-, and pregnancy-prevention interventions. This paper describes the rationale, study design, and baseline results for the Safer Choices 2 program. STUDY DESIGN: Modified group-randomized intervention trial with cross-over of schools but not of students. The study cohort was defined a priori as those who completed the baseline measures and were still enrolled at the time of first follow-up. DESIGN RESULTS
