Individual oral symptoms in burning mouth syndrome may be associated differentially with depression and anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is an idiopathic disease characterized by the feeling of burning in the oral cavity. Ten per cent of patients presenting to oral medicine clinics have BMS. Anxiety and depression are common co-morbidities in BMS, but it is not known if they are associated with specific BMS symptoms. OBJECTIVE: In an exploratory analysis, this study examined the association of generalized anxiety and depression with individual BMS symptoms. METHODS: Forty-one patients were recruited from a dental outpatient clinic (30 with BMS and 11 with other oral conditions), evalua

Case series of undetected intranasal impression material in patients with clefts.

We report the cases of two female patients in their twenties who had had corrective surgery for bilateral cleft lip and palate as babies. They had both had residual palatal fistulas and had had further treatment that required repeated dental impressions. Several years later both had complained of persistent nasal discomfort and discharge, and routine clinical examination and investigations had failed to identify the cause. Full examination of the whole nasal cavity under general anaesthesia, in both cases, showed the presence of displaced dental impression material in the nasal floor. Removal

Effect of chewing gums on the production of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) in vivo.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of two chewing gums on the production of volatile sulfur-containing compounds (VSC) in vivo. Fourteen periodontally healthy participants (20-35 years old) were included in the test panel. Test gum 1 (TG1) contained sucrose and Test gum 2 (TG2) contained xylitol and zinc citrate. Two series of tests were conducted with a double-blind cross-over design. Following an overnight refrain from oral hygiene, VSC was measured before and at 5, 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes of chewing the test gums. In the second series, VSC production was monitored pri

Flavoring agents present in a dentifrice can modify volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs) formation in morning bad breath.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a flavor-containing dentifrice on the formation of volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs) in morning bad breath. A two-step, blinded, crossover, randomized study was carried out in 50 dental students with a healthy periodontium divided into two experimental groups: flavor-containing dentifrice (test) and non-flavor-containing dentifrice (control). The volunteers received the designated dentifrice and a new toothbrush for a 3 X/day brushing regimen for 2 periods of 30 days. A seven-day washout interval was used between the periods. The assessed parameters

Reduction of mouth malodour and volatile sulphur compounds in intensive care patients using an essential oil mouthwash.

The aim of this study was to explore the effect of an essential oil solution on levels of malodour and production of volatile sulphur compounds (VSC) in patients nursed in intensive care unit (ICU). Thirty two patients received 3 min of oral cleaning using an essential oil solution (mixture of tea tree, Melaleuca alternifolia, peppermint, Mentha piperita and lemon, Citrus limon) on the first day, and Tantum (benzydamine hydrochloride) on the second day. Two trained nurses measured the level of malodour with a 10 cm visual analogue scale (VAS) and VSC with a Halimeter before (Pre), 5 min after

Relationship between total salivary protein content and volatile sulfur compounds levels in malodor patients.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between total salivary protein and VSC levels. STUDY DESIGN: A patient group comprised 67 patients from the Fresh Breath Clinic of the Dental Hospital, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, with 18 healthy subjects as a control group. Gas chromatography was used to measure concentrations of VSCs in mouth air. After collecting resting saliva, flow rate, pH, and the amount of total protein in saliva were measured. Salivary protein patterns were analyzed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). RESULTS: In the patient gro

The effects of a new therapeutic triclosan/copolymer/sodium-fluoride dentifrice on oral bacteria, including odorigenic species.

This investigation examined the in vitro and ex vivo antimicrobial effects of a new dentifrice, Colgate Total Advanced Fresh, formulated with triclosan/copolymer/sodium fluoride, on oral bacteria, including those odorigenic bacteria implicated in bad breath. The effects of Colgate Total Advanced Fresh were compared to commercially available fluoride dentifrices that served as controls. Three experimental approaches were undertaken for these studies. In the first approach, the dentifrice formulations were tested in vitro against 13 species of oral bacteria implicated in bad breath. The second a

Somatoform salivary complaints. Case reports.

Patients with salivary gland complaints are seen with a large array of signs and symptoms. Usually these patients have an underlying pathophysiological process that can account for their symptoms. However, in a significant number of patients, no known biological process can be found that would account for the patient's complaint. In such cases, somatization is a possible cause. Somatization is a frequently cited feature of patients with various forms of mental illness. In this paper, we will attempt to illustrate the classic signs of a somatoform disorder in three different patients whose dive

The benefits of toothpaste--real or imagined? The effectiveness of toothpaste in the control of plaque, gingivitis, periodontitis, calculus and oral malodour.

Toothbrushing with toothpaste is the most widely used method of home dental care for the populations of the Western world. The traditional role of toothpaste is primarily cosmetic, in aiding the cleaning of teeth and producing fresh breath. Today, however, formulations contain ingredients which may also help oral health by way of reducing dental plaque and improving gingival/periodontal health. This article provides a short review on the usefulness of these chemicals when used primarily in toothpastes.

Organic solvents and oils as vehicles for triclosan in mouthrinses: a clinical study.

Previous experiments have shown that the nature of the detergents used in aqueous triclosan-containing mouthrinses affects the plaque-inhibiting effect of these mouthrinses, probably because of the properties of the micelles formed. It has also been shown that triclosan has a marked plaque-inhibiting effect when dissolved in pure propylene glycol. The aim of the present study was to compare the clinical effect of triclosan dissolved in oils and in the pure solvents glycerol (GLY) and polyethylene glycol (PEG). A test panel of 12 volunteers rinsed with the allocated mouthrinses for 4 days in a

A multifactorial investigation of the ability of oral health care products (OHCPs) to alleviate oral malodour.

This study assesses the relative effectiveness of 6 oral health care products in reducing oral cavity volatile sulphur compound concentrations. METHOD: A mixed model 3-factor factorial experimental design involving 6 volunteers, 7 treatment regimens (products I-VI* and water placebo) and 5 time-points (0.00-5.29 h) was undertaken.
