Helicobacter pylori eradication and associated changes in the gastric mucosa.

Persistent Helicobacter pylori infection contributes towards the development of chronic gastritis. To clarify the changes in chronic gastritis as a precursor of gastric cancer secondary to H. pylori eradication is an important issue, as it has significant implications for reducing the risk of gastric cancer. Studies published to date, however, are far from consistent with regard to the morphologic changes reported following H. pylori eradication. Of these, some papers reported improvement in gastric atrophy or intestinal metaplasia, versus others reporting no improvement, with the majority of …

Extradigestive manifestation of Helicobacter pylori infection in children and adolescents.

Helicobacter pylori infection fulfills each of Koch's postulates as a human pathogen causing chronic active gastritis. Disease consequences that develop in a subset of infected subjects include peptic ulcerations, gastric adenocarcinoma and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. More recently, multiple publications have advocated a role for H. pylori infection in causing a variety of extraintestinal manifestations. Many of these reports suffer from being case reports or case series without adequate controls. As a result, purported manifestations may simply be coincidental in nature. On th…

Iron deficiency and Helicobacter pylori infection in the United States.

Using data from the current National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2000), the authors assessed whether Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) in the United States. Iron deficiency was defined as at least two abnormal results out of three biomarkers of iron stores. IDA was defined as a low hemoglobin level in the presence of iron deficiency. H. pylori infection was measured by serology. Complex survey estimators were used in the analysis. For 7,462 survey participants aged >or=3 years, H. pylori infection was associated …

Helicobacter pylori in patients can be killed by visible light.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori colonizes the mucus layer of the human stomach and may cause peptic ulcer and adenocarcinoma. Novel antimicrobial approaches are sought due to the occurrence of antibiotic resistance and consequent treatment failure. We report here that H. pylori is susceptible to inactivation by blue light. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: A controlled, prospective, blinded, trial of endoscopically delivered blue light to eradicate H. pylori in regions of the gastric antrum, in 10 patients between the ages of 21 and 80 who tested positive for H. pylori. Light (405 nm) (40 J…

Helicobacter heilmannii gastritis: a case study with review of literature.

H. heilmannii belongs to the Helicobacter family and is found in a small number of gastric biopsies. This bacterium is generally found in primates, cats, pigs, and carnivorous mammals. About 0.5% to 6% of human gastric infections have been attributed to H. heilmannii. The bacterium usually induces mild chronic gastritis but may be associated with peptic ulceration, and rare cases were reported in association with gastric carcinoma and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. We report a case of H. heilmannii chronic gastritis in a 44-year-old man with a history of chronic heartburn, found t…

Helicobacter pylori and gastrointestinal symptoms in school children in Russia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Helicobacter pylori is considered to be the major cause of chronic gastritis and duodenal ulcer disease recurrence in childhood. However, the association between H. pylori and recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) syndrome is still controversial. Therefore, the spectrum of clinical variants of gastrointestinal symptoms associated with H. pylori-positive status was studied in consecutive symptomatic children who were undergoing diagnostic endoscopy. METHODS: A consecutive series of 225 school children from the Ural area of Russia (mean age 11.1 + 1.4 years, age range 7-15 years) …

The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in benign laryngeal disorders.

Helicobacter pylori (HP) is an accepted cause of chronic active gastritis and has a major causative role in peptic ulcers. It is a gastric carcinogen. Its role in nonulcer dyspepsia (NUD) is less clear, yet 50% of patients with NUD are infected with HP, and some recent literature demonstrates long-term improvement of symptoms following eradication. HP has been investigated in several other organ systems, but has not been investigated to any major degree in laryngeal disorders, a region that could be directly exposed to the bacterium from pharyngolaryngeal reflux. This study represents one arm …
