Dynamics of a network-based SIR epidemic model with double impulsive controls.

A network-based susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) epidemic model is proposed to study the spread of infectious diseases, thereby incorporating vertical transmission and a saturated incidence rate. Additionally, it introduces double impulsive control strategies, including pulse vaccination and screening with treatment at distinct fixed intervals. Dynamical behaviors of the formulated model are analyzed using two types of transmission thresholds, namely $ R^0_{k_i} $ and $ \widehat{R^0_{k_i}} $. By applying the Floquet theorem and comparison principle, the system admits a disease-free periodi

An Integrated Approach to Addictive Behaviors: A Study on Vulnerability and Maintenance Factors.

This study aimed to explore the relationships among the variables involved in a Comprehensive Model of Addiction (CMA), which posits that the presence and severity of addictive behaviors are related to the configuration of seven psychological variables, namely childhood trauma, insecure attachment, affect dysregulation, dissociation, impulsivity, compulsiveness, and obsessiveness. A vulnerability model was proposed, in which it was suggested that affect dysregulation and complex trauma mediated the association between insecure attachment and dissociation. Furthermore, a maintenance model was e

Relations between traumatic stress, dimensions of impulsivity, and reactive and appetitive aggression in individuals with refugee status.

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic stressors and other forms of adversities, especially when experienced during childhood, shape aggressive behavior. Effects of differential dimensions of impulsivity on the relationship between psychological trauma, reactive aggression (defensive survival response to threat), and appetitive aggression (the pleasure of attacking and fighting) have not yet been assessed. METHOD: Using structural equation modeling, we sought to uncover precursors of reactive and appetitive aggression investigating a sample of 94 adult individuals with refugee status. We were interested in dir

Validation of the questionnaire for impulsive-compulsive disorders in Parkinson's disease (QUIP) and the QUIP-rating scale in a German speaking sample.

Impulsive-compulsive disorders are frequent in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Recently, a screening questionnaire and rating scale were developed for these disorders: the questionnaire for impulsive-compulsive disorders (QUIP) and QUIP-rating scale (QUIP-RS). We assessed the validity of these instruments in the German language in order to reevaluate the benefit and to obtain German screening tools in clinical practice. A convenience sample of 156 patients was assessed in Kiel and Vienna. The patients filled out the QUIP-current, the QUIP-anytime and the QUIP-RS. We validated the quest

Predicting treatment failure in pathological gambling: the role of personality traits.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was twofold: First, to assess the personality profile of treatment-seeking adult outpatients with pathological gambling compared to a matched control group under the Alternative Five Factor Model perspective, and second, to determine which personality variables would predict treatment outcome. METHODS: The final total sample consisted of 44 consecutive treatment-seeking pathological gamblers (PGs) and 88 controls paired by age and sex who completed the Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire (ZKPQ). Twelve months after starting an open program of indivi

Serotonergic responsivity and behavioral dimensions in antisocial personality disorder with substance abuse.

In order to assess the possibility of altered serotonergic responsivity in antisocial personality disorder with substance abuse (ASP), 15 men with ASP and 12 controls were challenged with the serotonin agonist, m-chlorophenylpiperazine (m-CPP), and prolactin and cortisol responses were evaluated. Psychometric measures of hostility and aggression, impulsivity, cognitive tempo, and various aspects of sociopathy were also obtained. ASP subjects had a significantly reduced prolactin response to m-CPP compared with controls, and a significantly greater cortisol response. The prolactin responses sho

Behavioral effects of congenital ventromedial prefrontal cortex malformation.

BACKGROUND: A detailed behavioral profile associated with focal congenital malformation of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) has not been reported previously. Here we describe a 14 year-old boy, B.W., with neurological and psychiatric sequelae stemming from focal cortical malformation of the left vmPFC. CASE PRESENTATION: B.W.'s behavior has been characterized through extensive review Patience of clinical and personal records along with behavioral and neuropsychological testing. A central feature of the behavioral profile is severe antisocial behavior. He is aggressive, manipulative,

Behavior completion mechanisms rather than primary drives maintain behavioral patterns.

Anxiety is identified with a state of high arousal. Agoraphobia is differentiated from specific phobias which are inherent responses to situations which threatened primitive man. In agoraphobia, attacks of high arousal are produced by situations which delay ongoing activity. It is hypothesised that such delays produce arousal by activating behavior completion mechanisms. Evidence is reviewed which indicates desensitization has a specific effect in agoraphobia but not in specific phobias. It is suggested that desensitization reduces the arousal produced by behavior completion mechanisms. -- Ave

Electrophysiological Signatures of Planned and Unplanned Continuous Movement Termination in Parkinson's Disease.

The ability to inhibit and adapt our behavior in response to changing stimuli is a critical component of everyday life. Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) may struggle to inhibit behavior, particularly in the presence of dopaminergic therapy, which can result in impulsive behavior. Impulse control disorders are often operationalized in the laboratory using motor inhibition tasks. However, deficits of motor inhibition tasks are not always observed in PD, perhaps because of the nature of the motor inhibition that is engaged in typical tasks (e.g., suppression of incipient movement such as…

Emotion dysregulation mediates the effect of borderline personality disorder on child psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Children of mothers with borderline personality disorder (BPD) face an increased risk of developing mental health issues. To prevent the intergenerational transmission of psychopathology, a thorough understanding of specific pathways is essential. BPD is characterized by symptoms such as difficulties in emotion regulation, impulsivity, and attachment insecurity, all of which have a detrimental impact on child development. Here, we explore the role of these three core characteristics as potential mediators for the impact of maternal BPD on child psychopathology. METHODS: The study

The association between anger rumination and emotional dysregulation in borderline personality disorder: A review.

INTRODUCTION: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is characterized by impulsiveness, interpersonal difficulties, emotional instability and dysfunctional cognitive processes. In addition to these symptoms, anger rumination is a cognitive mechanism often prominent in BPD patients and it has been found to be associated with maladaptive outcomes, such as increasing anger feelings, aggressive and impulsive behaviors. In this context, the aim of our review is to synthesize results on the relationship between emotional dysregulation and anger rumination in BPD with the final goal to get more inform…

Distinct Situational Cue Processing in Individuals with Kleptomania: A Preliminary Study.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorder has been suggested to meet the criteria of addiction and is often considered a behavioral addiction; however, few studies have examined whether the disorder involves altered responses to situational cues that are associated with symptoms. In this study, we examined behavioral and neural responses to situational cues among individuals with an impulse control disorder: kleptomania. METHODS: Healthy adults and kleptomania patients whose symptoms were characterized by repetitive, uncontrolled shoplifting of sales goods in stores were recruited. Images with and

Clinical, psychological, social, and family characterization of suicidal behavior in Chilean adolescents: a multiple correspondence analysis.

Introduction Suicide is the second leading cause of premature death in people between 15 and 29 years old and the third in young people between 15 and 19 years old. Adolescence is a critical period concerning mental health disorders since there is greater vulnerability to suicidal behaviors. The situation in Latin America is worrying, with Chile being one of the two countries where suicide rates of children and adolescents increase yearly. This study aims to analyze clinical, psychological, family, and social risk factors associated with suicidal behavior in a clinical sample of adolescents tr

Iowa Gambling Task Performance in Parkinson Disease Patients with Impulse Control Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: A subgroup of patients with Parkinson disease (PD) develops impulse control disorders (ICD) associated with their dopamine replacement therapy. Patients and their families may be reluctant to report ICD symptoms or unaware these symptoms are related to PD medication, which can make detecting an ICD difficult for clinicians. Ideally, a behavioral measure that is sensitive to ICD could be employed to ensure that patients with these behaviors are identified and treated. The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), a standardized decision-making task, has proven sensitive in other populations with imp

Joint nociceptor nerve activity and pain in an animal model of acute gout and its modulation by intra-articular hyaluronan.

The mechanisms whereby deposition of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals in gout activates nociceptors to induce joint pain are incompletely understood. We tried to reproduce the signs of painful gouty arthritis, injecting into the knee joint of rats suspensions containing amorphous or triclinic, needle MSU crystals. The magnitude of MSU-induced inflammation and pain behavior signs were correlated with the changes in firing frequency of spontaneous and movement-evoked nerve impulse activity recorded in single knee joint nociceptor saphenous nerve fibers. Joint swelling, mechanical and cold allodyn

Behavioral predictors of substance-use initiation in adolescents with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to examine substance-use initiation in healthy adolescents and in adolescents who have been diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. METHODS: Seventy-eight adolescents (28 healthy and 50 with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) participated in an ongoing longitudinal study of predictors of substance use. The substances most commonly reported were tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana. Aggression, conduct problems, hyperactivity, impulsivity, inattention, anxiety/depression, social difficulties, and somatic complaints were assessed at study entry and tes

Perinatal exposure to delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) alters goal-directed behavior and dopamine functioning in wistar rats.

RATIONALE: Cannabis use during 2021pregnancy is common as many pregnant women consider cannabis as a safe way to alleviate symptoms associated with pregnancy because it is "natural". However, clinical evidence links perinatal cannabis exposure to externalizing behavior in offspring. In preclinical research, most studies focus on exposure to the psychoactive constituent of cannabis, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is lipophilic, allowing it to cross the placental barrier and be secreted in maternal milk, thereby exposing the fetus/neonate. OBJECTIVE: We used operant procedures to measu

Psychiatric considerations in deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease.

Deep brain stimulation targeting the subthalamic nucleus or globus pallidus internus are highly effective for the symptomatic treatment of Parkinson's disease. The assessment and management of psychiatric issues is relevant to preoperative patient selection and to optimal postoperative outcomes. This chapter reviews the evidence on psychiatric symptoms in the perioperative state including suicidal behaviors, depression, anxiety, mania, apathy, and impulse control disorders.
