Genital warts: Canadians' perception, health-related behaviors, and treatment preferences.

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to gauge the perceptions of Canadians toward genital warts, related health behaviors, and treatment preferences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An online survey supported by an unrestricted grant from Graceway Canada was conducted in February 2011 by Leger Marketing. It included 9 demographic questions and 17 questions relating to genital wart perception (2 multiple-choice, 15 four-point rating from strongly agree to strongly disagree). RESULTS: The survey was completed by 1520 Canadian adults aged 18 to older than 75 years, of whom 52% (786/1520) were female. Fifty-two pe

Rabies-related knowledge and practices among persons at risk of bat exposures in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a fatal encephalitis caused by lyssaviruses. Evidence of lyssavirus circulation has recently emerged in Southeast Asian bats. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Thailand to assess rabies-related knowledge and practices among persons regularly exposed to bats and bat habitats. The objectives were to identify deficiencies in rabies awareness, describe the occurrence of bat exposures, and explore factors associated with transdermal bat exposures. METHODS: A survey was administered to a convenience sample of adult guano miners, bat hunters, game wardens, and residents/

The prevalence and correlates of DSM-IV disorders in the Iraq Mental Health Survey (IMHS).

Data on the prevalence and correlates of anxiety, mood, behavioral, and substance disorders are presented from a 2007-8 national survey of the Iraq population, the Iraq Mental Health Survey (IMHS). The IMHS was carried out by the Iraq Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Iraq Ministry of Planning and the World Health Organization (WHO) World Mental Health (WMH) Survey Initiative. Interviews were administered to a probability sample of Iraqi household residents by trained lay interviewers. The WHO Composite International Diagnostic interview (CIDI) was used to assess DSM-IV disorders. T

Quality and reliability of semaglutide content on different Chinese short video platforms: a study focusing on side effects.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the quality, reliability, and content characteristics of semaglutide-related short videos on three major Chinese short-video platforms (Bilibili, TikTok, and Rednote), with a focus on exploring differences in the presentation of side effects across different platforms and uploader types. Rather than examining specific clinical indications or dosing regimens, this study focuses on how semaglutide-related information is presented to the general public in real-world short-video contexts. It seeks to clarify the impact of platform ecology and creator identity

Informing Policy Responses to Digital Technology Use and Youth Mental Health and Well-Being: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: The mental health of children, adolescents, and youths is a growing concern globally, with increasing prevalence of conditions and help-seeking behavior. Alongside traditional factors, digital determinants are now prominent influences on mental health. With digital platforms integral to young people's lives, and problematic social media use rising, policymakers face the challenge of balancing the benefits and risks of young people's digital technology use. Decisive action is hindered by inconsistent evidence on the impacts of social media and other technology use on mental health a

Genetic evidence that FGF21 signaling reduces problematic alcohol use and alcohol-related liver disease.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) analogs are in development for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), but their impact on problematic alcohol use (PAU), alcohol use disorder, binge drinking, and alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) is unknown. METHODS: We leveraged genome-wide association study data from the UK Biobank, FinnGen, Million Veterans Program, and GenomALC for PAU, alcohol use disorder, binge drinking, weekly drinks, and ALD. Our four-tier evaluation included: (1) multivariable Mendelian randomization (MR) and mediation with circulat

Effects of a Safety User Interface Bundle on Verification Intentions in Generative AI Chat Use Among Older Chinese Adults: Randomized Vignette Survey.

BACKGROUND: Generative AI chat systems are increasingly used for everyday information seeking, but plausible errors and omissions can mislead users when outputs are accepted without scrutiny. Interface-level safety cues may help users calibrate trust and engage in verification; yet, evidence in older Chinese adults remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to test whether adding a safety user interface (UI) bundle to a generative AI chat interface increases verification intention among older Chinese adults and to examine selected secondary outcomes, including reliance intention, trust cali

Complexity of Adherence Challenges: Understanding Syndemic Factors Affecting HIV Treatment Adherence During Treatment Initiation in Cape Town, South Africa.

People living with HIV and beginning antiretroviral therapy (ART) often struggle with medication adherence and attending appointments due to multi-level challenges such as depression symptoms, substance use, stigma and disclosure, food insecurity, health system challenges, transportation challenges, and gender inequity. The SUSTAIN trial seeks to improve initiation adherence through multiple monitoring and support interventions in three clinics in Mitchells Plain township, Cape Town, South Africa. We qualitatively explored the multi-level challenges impacting adherence at the individual, inter

Barriers to malaria prevention among immigrant travelers in the United States who visit friends and relatives in sub-Saharan Africa: A cross-sectional, multi-setting survey of knowledge, attitudes, and practices.

BACKGROUND: Despite achievements in the reduction of malaria globally, imported malaria cases to the United States by returning international travelers continue to increase. Immigrants to the United States from sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) who then travel back to their homelands to visit friends and relatives (VFRs) experience a disproportionate burden of malaria illness. Various studies have explored barriers to malaria prevention among VFRs and non-VFRs-travelers to the same destinations with other purpose for travel-but few employed robust epidemiologic study designs or performed comparative an

Brainstem Evoked Potential Indices of Subcortical Auditory Processing After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

OBJECTIVES: The primary aim of this study was to assess subcortical auditory processing in individuals with chronic symptoms after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) by measuring auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) to standard click and complex speech stimuli. Consistent with reports in the literature of auditory problems after mTBI (despite normal-hearing thresholds), it was hypothesized that individuals with mTBI would have evidence of impaired neural encoding in the auditory brainstem compared to noninjured controls, as evidenced by delayed latencies and reduced amplitudes of ABR components

[Diagnosis of functional heart complaints from the psychosomatic viewpoint].

Disorders of the cardiovascular system are common. Heart pain is one of the most frequent complaints leading patients to seek medical help. Although psychologically conspicuous behaviour in patients with functional cardiac complaints are well known, they are--if at all--diagnosed quite late. Descriptive diagnostics of functional cardiac complaints according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10, Chapter 5) are discussed (Figure 1). Possible physical causes of the disease must first be excluded. In a second step it must be clarified whether the complaints even those non-verbal

"Because you just get stuck in this hamster wheel" - experience and narratives of work-family conflicts among patients in psychosomatic rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Workplace problems are among the most common reasons for entering psychosomatic rehabilitation (PR). Parents with mental disorders (MD) often face additional caregiving demands alongside combined work and family responsibilities. However, this issue has received little attention in rehabilitation research so far. This so-called Work-Family Conflict (WFC) is associated with depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions, yet little is known about how patients with MD experience and interpret these conflicts. METHODS: We conducted a secondary qualitative analysis of 32 semi

Endometrial cancer awareness as a public health blind spot: a cross-sectional survey study.

BACKGROUND: Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecological cancer. With well-established risk factors and symptoms yet no early-detection screening test, patient-led symptom awareness is essential for early detection. With endometrial cancer rates rising, especially among younger populations, identifying gaps in public knowledge is essential for informing public health strategy. This study evaluates awareness of endometrial cancer symptoms and risk factors among healthy women to identify systemic disparities with global policy implications. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey of Isra

A systematic review culturally adapted Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CaCBT) for Arabic-speaking populations including North African subgroups.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for common mental disorders. However, most CBT protocols have been developed within Western cultural frameworks, which may limit their relevance for culturally diverse populations. Culturally adapted CBT (CaCBT) seeks to enhance treatment acceptability and effectiveness by integrating linguistic, cultural, religious, and contextual factors. Despite growing interest in culturally adapted interventions, evidence regarding Arabic-speaking populations, including North African subgroups, remains fragmented. METHODS: Following

Resiliency is a Predictor of Clinical Outcomes in a Chronic Pain Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Multidimensional strategies to improve pain have advanced the understanding of pain and pain treatment, yet the examination of biopsychosocial factors and associated treatments within pain management has not reached the mainstream. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to explore whether psychological variables added to routinely collected medical information were associated with clinical outcomes and the need for additional treatments after an initial chronic pain intervention. STUDY DESIGN: This prospective, observational study recruited patients during their initial pain

Evaluating implementation preparedness for suicide screening and referral in a Nepali emergency department: A mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Most research on appropriate, feasible, and effective suicide screening has excluded research conducted in non-Western and low-income settings. This study explores preparedness and co-designing a suicide screening and referral intervention in a Nepali emergency department (ED) using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR). METHOD: To assess implementation readiness and context, we conducted eight key informant interviews and four focus-group discussions with clinical staff along with 3 months of embedded ethnography. We also assessed clinical staff (n = 26) k

Spatial and clinical epidemiology of spotted fever rickettsioses and ehrlichiosis, North Carolina, 2010-2019.

BACKGROUND: North Carolina (NC) ranks among the top five states for spotted fever rickettsiosis (SFR) cases and second for ehrlichiosis in the U.S. Identifying geographic clusters of cases is important to elucidate disease risk and inform public health response, including resource allocation. This study examined geographic patterns of tick-borne disease incidence in NC over a 10-year period and modeled predictors of disease severity. METHODOLOGY/FINDINGS: We analyzed 6,748 SFR and 1,216 ehrlichiosis cases reported to the NC Electronic Disease Surveillance System between January 2010 and Decem

TB will never end because of us: Experiences of TB preventive treatment among people living with HIV/AIDS in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health challenge, particularly for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). TB preventive treatment (TPT) has been found to reduce the risk of TB among PLWHA. As TPT has become a standard component of HIV care, understanding client-level perceptions and knowledge of TPT is crucial to optimizing uptake. METHODS: This qualitative sub-study was conducted within a cluster-randomized trial evaluating a TPT initiation strategy in two provinces of South Africa. The qualitative component explored patient understanding and experiences with HIV, TB, and
