Field trials evaluating selected commercially available mosquito traps variously baited with light, carbon dioxide, and/or octenol were conducted from 18-27 September 2000 in a malarious area near Paekyeon-ri (Tongil-Chon) and Camp Greaves in Paju County, Kyonggi Province, Republic of Korea. The host-seeking activity for common mosquito species, including the primary vector of Japanese encephalitis, Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles, was determined using hourly aspirator collections from a human and propane lantern-baited Shannon trap during hours when temperatures exceeded 15 degrees C. The total

The Indian National Malaria Eradication Programme (NMEP) is reporting 2.5 to 3 million malaria cases, and about 1,000 malaria deaths annually. Malaria in the northeastern states is stable and in the peninsular India unstable. There are six major and three minor malaria vectors, of which Anopheles culicifacies transmits malaria in rural areas and An. stephensi in the towns. Other vectors are of local importance. Plasmodium vivax is the dominant infection and accounts for 60-65% cases whereas P. falciparum contributes 30-35% cases. Field operations to control malaria are impeded by resistance an

About 30 yr after malaria eradication, surveys to assess the presence and abundance of anopheline vectors were carried out in central and southern Italy and in the islands of Sardinia and Sicily from 1992 to 1994. Anopheles labranchiae Falleroni was present in scattered foci in all regions, except for Tuscany, where it breeds almost exclusively in rice fields (Grosseto Province). Most common breeding sites were rivers and streams, followed by ponds and ground pools. The highest adult density was found in Tuscany near rice fields and along the west coast of Calabria. Anophelines in Grosseto wer

A critical phase in the life cycle of the fly species that cause myiasis is host location by the adult females, whether by direct location of and contact with the host, or by indirect location through the selection of sites frequented by hosts. The stimuli to which these flies respond in host location, principally visual and olfactory, are discussed here in the context of their use to enhance the performance of trapping systems used in research, monitoring and control. The three major families of flies encountered in myiasis can be divided into two groups for comparison of host-location strate

Malaria is a serious public health problem in numerous countries of the world. In Africa alone, it is estimated that more than a million children less than five years of age die each year from this disease. The problem has become more critical with the development of Plasmodium falciparum resistance to chloroquine, the high cost of replacement antimalarials, and vector resistance to the cheaper insecticides such as DDT. Emphasis now is on sustainable control programs that can be implemented by communities with assistance from primary health care providers. This has led to a re-examination of i

The western extension area of the Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa (OCP) covers five countries: Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali (western part), Senegal and Sierra Leone. From 1986 to 1990, national teams employed by the respective governments have been regularly collecting entomological data on the vectors of onchocerciasis in these countries. As in the initial programme area of the OCP, the entomological surveillance network was composed of entomological sectors and subsectors (the latter are called "operational bases" in the western extension). In 1990, 308 staff in 47 capture tea

Three organophosphorus compounds- malathion, folithion and temephos- and two synthetic pyrethroids- alphamethrin and deltamethrin- were used for monitoring the susceptibility status of larvae and adults of six vector mosquito species: Culex quinquefasciatus (Filariasis) and Aedes albopictus (Dengue) (both laboratory and field strains); laboratory strains of Aedes aegypti (Dengue), Anopheles stephensi and Anopheles culicifacies (Malaria), and Culex tritaeniorhynchus (Japanese encephalitis) in India. From the LC50 values obtained for these insecticides, it was found that all mosquito species inc

The effects of bi-weekly flumethrin pour-on treatments at 1 mg kg bodyweight on tsetse fly population and trypanosome infection rates were monitored over a one-year period (2/89-2/90) in 2000 head of cattle on a trial farm, located in the Lamu District in East Kenya, an adjacent control farm and a transsecting road for additional fly monitoring. The tsetse fly population on the trial farm dropped from pretreatment counts of 118 flies/trap/week (Feb. 1989) to 13 in June 1989 and 32 in Jan. 1990. During the same period and months the fly population in the control farm was 90.34 and 87 flies/trap

Mosquito collections by using light traps have been carried out at 10 to 11 stations in Kyoto City area at intervals of about 10 days every year. Mean percent indexes (MPI), being calculated from the data of mosquito collections, were used for comparison of the annual abundance of mosquitoes. It is no doubt that Culex tritaeniorhynchus summorosus has decreased recently and this decrease is correlated with the reduction of human patients of Japanese encephalitis. Wide use of two herbicides, CNP and nitrofen, for rice plant cultivation, may probably be one of the reasons for the decrease of the

Eggs from crosses of 40 adult male R. prolixus irradiated with 6K rad gamma-rays with normal females had a mean fertility of 23.9%, only 2 crosses being completely sterile. The 86 F1 progeny of both sexes, when outcrossed with normal mates, had a mean egg fertility of 12.6;, and 43 of these matings were completely sterile. Twenty-eight "F2" bugs reared from F1 X normal crosses were mated with normal partners and had a mean fertility of 44.6%, 6 of them being fully fertile, a reversal towards normal fertility. Cytogenetic examination of F1, "F2" and "F3" males showed that these changes in ferti

As a suitable emergency measure to arrest epidemics of Japanese encephalitis in Korea, the ultra-low-volume method of spraying insecticide to control the mosquito vector Culex tritaeniorhynchus has been tested in 2 successive years over a 16-km (2) area, utilizing a large fixed-wing aircraft. Malathion concentrate applied at 0.36 litres/ha gave insufficient control of the parous (infective) females, and no reduction in total numbers of this species. Fenitrothion concentrate applied at 0.45 litres/ha resulted in a 77-87% reduction in total numbers and an 87-98% reduction in parous females over
