Direct oral anticoagulants versus vitamin K antagonists in epistaxis patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Epistaxis is the most common otolaryngological emergency and up to one third of patients in treated on an inpatient basis take oral anticoagulants (OAC). Direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC), an OAC subgroup, have been on the market since 2010 and are being increasingly prescribed due to the cardiological and haematological guidelines that favour them over vitamin K antagonists (VKA), the older of the OAC subgroups. The present study aims to investigate which subgroup of epistaxis patients taking OACs has a more favourable outcome. DESIGN/SETTING: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Efficacy of intercostal cryoneurolysis as an analgesic adjunct for chest wall pain after surgery or trauma: systematic review.

BACKGROUND: There is a critical need for non-narcotic analgesic adjuncts in the treatment of thoracic pain. We evaluated the efficacy of intercostal cryoneurolysis as an analgesic adjunct for chest wall pain, specifically addressing the applicability of intercostal cryoneurolysis for pain control after chest wall trauma. METHODS: A systematic review was performed through searches of PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library. We included studies involving patients of all ages that evaluated the efficacy of intercostal cryoneurolysis as a pain adjunct for chest wall pathology. Quantitative and q

Effect of preoperative nutritional supplementation on postoperative outcomes for patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy for cancer: a systematic review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: This review aims to present the best available evidence related to the effect of preoperative nutritional supplementation on postoperative outcomes for patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy for cancer. INTRODUCTION: Pancreaticoduodenectomy surgery is the only curative option for early head of pancreas and periampullary cancers. This complex, high-risk procedure is associated with significant morbidity, making opportunities to improve outcomes paramount. Nutritional supplementation in the preoperative period may enhance the body's ability to withstand the stress of major surge

The Impact of Urgent (<8 Hours) Decompression on Neurologic Recovery in Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury: A Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between urgent decompression and neurologic recovery for traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) remains controversial. This meta-analysis was conducted to determine the beneficial effects of surgery within 8 hours for patients with TSCI. METHODS: A systematic search in EMBASE, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and PubMed for relevant studies was conducted from the earliest records until December 2019. Studies that compared outcomes of early (<8 hours) surgery versus late (≥8 hours) surgery for patients with TSCI were selected for analysis. RESULTS: Nine cohort studies invol

Antibiotic-loaded bone cement in primary total knee arthroplasty: does it reduce the risk of periprosthetic joint infection?

BACKGROUND: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a widely used technique, the purpose of which is to improve or eliminate knee pain produced by osteoarthritis. One of the most severe complications of primary TKA is periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). To reduce the risk of PJI, some surgeons use antibiotic-loaded bone cement (ALBC) in primary TKA, but others do not. In other words, the routine use of ALBC in primary TKA is controversial. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to perform a narrative review of recent literature with the aim of answering the following question: Does ALBC reduce

Is secondary robotic pyeloplasty safe and effective as primary robotic pyeloplasty? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Robot-assisted laparoscopic pyeloplasty (RLP) has excellent surgical safety and efficacy in primary pyeloplasty. In recent, the application of robotics has explored to more complex surgical conditions such as failed pyeloplasty. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the surgical and clinical outcomes of secondary RLP compared with primary RLP. Following PRISMA guidelines, we carried out an extensive literature search in the PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Google Scholar to extract the published articles comparing primary vs. secondary RLP up to April 2019. Management of Isolated Skull Fractures in Pediatric Patients: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Isolated skull fractures (ISFs) in children are one of the most common emergency department injuries. Recent studies suggest these children may be safely discharged following ED evaluation with little risk of delayed neurological compromise. The aim of this study was to propose an evidence-based protocol for the management of ISF in children in an effort to reduce medically unnecessary hospital admissions. METHODS: Using PubMed and The Cochrane Library databases, a literature search using the search terms (pediatric OR child) AND skull fracture AND (isolated OR linear) was perform

Clinical evaluation of prophylactic abdominal aortic balloon occlusion in patients with placenta accreta: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Severe obstetric hemorrhage caused by placenta accreta results in significant maternal morbidity and mortality. As a new technology, abdominal aortic balloon occlusion (AABO) is becoming an important treatment for patients with placenta accreta. To evaluate the safety and efficacy of AABO, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of previous studies. METHODS: We used a three-check subset including placenta accreta (placenta previa, percreta, increta, etc.), balloon, and aortic (aortas, aorta, etc.) to form a retrieval formula and searched in MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane
