Two patients developed symptomatic hypomagnesemia most likely secondary to gentamicin therapy. Both patients were on regular doses of the antibiotic and had hypokalemia and hypocalcemia secondary to hypomagnesemia. Mechanisms postulated for the occurrence of hypomagnesemia secondary to gentamicin therapy include drug-induced hyperaldosteronism and tubular toxicity. Patients on gentamicin therapy should have serum magnesium, calcium, and potassium levels monitored routinely.

Aminoglycoside antibiotic drugs may cause ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Our hypothesis postulates that aminoglycosides cause ototoxicity by a mechanism of magnesium depletion in the hair cells of the cochlea. The same mechanism maybe responsible for nephrotoxicity caused by aminoglycosides.

Parathyroid function was studied in two infant sisters with primary hypomagnesemia while they were both hypomagnesemic and hypocalcemic. In … of PTH release and a normal calcemic response to exogenous PTH. The factors that determine whether magnesium deficiency will result in inhibition of PTH release, in a lack of response of the bone to endogenous and exogenous PTH, or both, remain to be clarified.

In chronic Mg-deficiency, there is a decrease in the content of Mg and K+ in the heart muscle. The contents of Ca, Na+ and hydroxyproline increase. There is also an increased urinary excretion of adrenaline and especially noradrenaline. With simultaneous noise stress, these changes are even greater. The magnitude of the changes increases with the degree of Mg-deficiency. The changes in the contents of Na+, K+, Ca, Mg and hydroxyproline correlate with the excretion of noradrenaline. The increase in the collagen content can be verified by electron microscopy, and it is due to a stimulation of th

1. Within a normal range for blood magnesium in cows, 1.55-3.0 mg of Mg per 100 ml of serum or plasma, statistically significant differences between individuals were detected. 2. Reference was made to studies of the renal handling of magnesium and to demonstrations in the literature of large individual variations in the ability of cows to utilize magnesium from the diet. It is logical to assume that such variations will contribute to the creation of individual differences in plasma levels of the element. The point was emphasized that to moderate differences in plasma concentration can correspo

At the onset of lactation, dairy cows suffer from insulin resistance, insulin deficiency or both, similar to human diabetes, resulting in lipolysis, ketosis and fatty liver. This work explored the combined effects of different levels of magnesium (0.1, 0.3, 1 and 3 mM) and insulin (25, 250 and 25,000 pM) on metabolic pathways and the expression of magnesium-responsive genes in a bovine adipocyte model. Magnesium starvation (0.1 mM) and low insulin (25 pM) independently decreased or tended to decrease the accumulation of non-polar lipids and uptake of the glucose analog 6-(N-(7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-

BACKGROUND: Magnesium deficiency has been associated with type 2 diabetes and may reduce insulin sensitivity and impair glucose tolerance. The etiology of magnesium depletion in diabetes is unclear. Animal studies suggest that diabetes may impair magnesium absorption; however, there are no published data on magnesium absorption in humans with diabetes.
OBJECTIVE: Magnesium absorption from a test meal and the excretion and retention of magnesium were compared between patients with type 2 diabetes and healthy control subjects.
DESIGN: A meal labeled with 10 mg (26)Mg isotopic label was adminis…

Resistance to vitamin D in magnesium depletion has been observed in humans and in animal studies. Variable levels of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D … th one another and demonstrate that in the rat conversion of 25(OH)D to 1,25(OH)2D is unimpaired in magnesium deficiency. Resistance to vitamin D in magnesium depletion is likely due to the impaired skeletal responsivity to 1,25(OH)2D, as demonstrated in earlier studies.

Recent work in both animal and human studies emphasizes the value of magnesium in the maintenance of the functional and structural integrity of cardiac muscle. Both intracellular and extracellular magnesium concentrations can vary independently and the serum and red cell magnesium levels may not give an accurate account of intracellular cardiac magnesium deficiency. However, electrocardiographic studies of magnesium levels could provide an accurate index of intracellular cardiac magnesium levels. Twenty-four patients scheduled electively for mitral valve replacement were studied to evaluate th…

Renal excretion is the major route of magnesium elimination from the body and a positive magnesium balance would be expected under conditions of renal insufficiency. However, a compensatory decrease in tubular reabsorption is operating to maintain an adequate urinary magnesium excretion even when glomerular filtration rates are very low. Nevertheless, in end-stage renal disease, the limited ability of the kidney to excrete an increased magnesium load may result in toxic concentrations of the ion in serum. While magnesium intoxication is a real hazard when magnesium-containing drugs are given,
