[Changes of postural statusa in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment].

The study objective was to determinate variations of stato-dynamical functional markers of postural balance system in the process of malocclusion treatment. Twenty patients aged from 14 to 30 years with class II malocclusion were recruited for this prospective study. All patients underwent electromyography of mm. temporalis and mm. maseter in rest and at maximal jaws pressure. Postural balance was evaluated by stabilometry platform and body's regions relationship was assessed by computer optical topography. Orthodontic interventions included using occlusal splint, dental straps or 'TwinForce'

Effects of skeletally anchored Class II elastics: A pilot study and new approach for treating Class II malocclusion.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the skeletal, dentoalveolar, and soft tissue effects of skeletally anchored Class II elastics and compare them with a matched control group treated by a monobloc appliance for the correction of skeletal Class II malocclusion due to mandibular retrusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve patients (6 girls, 6 boys) were randomly divided into two groups. In the elastics group, six patients (12.9 ± 1.5 years of age; 3 boys, 3 girls) were treated with skeletally anchored Class II elastics. Two miniplates were placed bilaterally at the ramus of the mandible and the other two mini

Miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion for managing arch perimeter in an adult patient.

INTRODUCTION:: Etiology of dental crowding may be related to arch constriction in diverse dimensions, and an appropriate manipulation of arch perimeter by intervening in basal bone discrepancies cases, may be a key for crowding relief, especially when incisors movement is limited due to underlying pathology, periodontal issues or restrictions related to soft tissue profile. OBJECTIVES:: This case report illustrates a 24-year old woman, with maxillary transverse deficiency, upper and lower arches crowding, Class II, division 1, subdivision right relationship, previous upper incisors traumatic

Fixed-functional appliance treatment combined with growth hormone therapy.

The purpose of this study was to illustrate the effects of growth hormone (GH) therapy and fixed functional appliance treatment in a 13-year-old Class II malocclusion patient without GH deficiency. GH has been shown to effectively increase endochondral growth and induce a more prognathic skeletal pattern. Although a major concern in Class II retrognathic patients is chin deficiency, long-term studies have shown that the mandibular growth enhancement effects of functional appliances are clinically insignificant. This case report demonstrates that the mandible grew significantly during fixed fun

Orthodontic management of missing lateral incisor by miniscrew-anchored device.

Congenitally missing teeth are one of the most common tooth anomalies associated to therapeutic sets of problems. Orthodontists should consider these clinical cases because management often requires an integrated orthodontic and restorative approach. In the present study authors reported a therapy note referred to a 14-year-old male patient affected by missing maxillary lateral incisors, bilateral dental Class II and deep bite, treated in 2009 at the Department of Orthodontics of the University of Messina. An orthodontic treatment has been planned with the aim of distalize maxillary molar and

[Orthodontic correction of a Brodie syndrome case related to oral habits].

Unilateral Brodie bite, called also Scissor bite, is a form of transversal malocclusion that often leads to minor facial asymmetry. The prevalence of this form of malocclusion is rare, especially met in mixed denture. We report a case of 11-year-old girl who presents unilateral scissor bite related to oral habits, with a skeletal class II. Modified activation by contraction of a bi-helix appliance was used to treat the unilateral scissor bite occlusion, before approaching the correction of the sagittal relationship.

Impacted maxillary central incisor: surgical exposure and orthodontic treatment.

This case report describes the treatment of a patient with a horizontally impacted maxillary central incisor, a canine in the same quadrant, and an inclusion tendency. Due to severe crowing in the maxilla and the Class II molar relationship on the impaction side, a 2-stage treatment plan was developed. In the first stage, the right first premolar and deciduous canine were extracted; this allowed enough space for the eruption of the maxillary right permanent canine. The second stage included surgical exposure and traction of the impacted central incisor with a fixed orthodontic appliance. An ex

Orthodontic treatment of a congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisor.

UNLABELLED: Clinicians agree that, regardless of gender or race, tooth agenesis has become more prominent in recent societies. The congenital absence of one or more maxillary lateral incisors poses a challenge to effective treatment planning for the restorative dentist. However, the one-sided orthodontic approach of just moving canines mesially to eliminate restorative procedures leads to compromise. Adult patients presenting with malocclusions, missing lateral incisors, or anterior crowding but who fail to get proper orthodontic treatment, requesting instead esthetic solutions that do not est

Long-term soft-tissue response to orthodontic treatment with early cervical headgear--a randomized study.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this longitudinal randomized investigation was to determine the long-term changes in the soft-tissue profile during orthodontic treatment when treatment is started with headgear (HG) in the early mixed dentition. METHODS: The subjects were 68 children (28 girls, 40 boys; mean age, 7.6 years; SD, 0.3 years) with a Class II tendency in occlusion and moderate crowding. They were randomly divided into 2 groups. In the HG group, treatment began immediately. No other appliances were used during the first 2 years. In the control group, only minor interceptive procedures

[Occlusal plane control in hyperdivergents: regarding one case].

Management of occlusal plane inclination in the sagittal dimension is one of the main concerns of practitioners. Inclination maintenance or correction can condition the success and stability of treatment. By means of a clinical case, we will attempt to discuss the different aspects of management from diagnosis to treatment, bearing in mind the local and regional context. The adopted treatment plan takes into consideration the functional and esthetic issues specific to Moroccan patients without neglecting soft tissue harmony.

[Vertical augmentation of the alveolar process by distraction osteogenesis].

This article describes the treatment of a boy with Class II deep bite and hypoplasia of the alveolar process due to agenesis of the canines and premolars. At first, the occlusion has been adjusted by advancement of the mandible and opening of the bite after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy. Later, under local anaesthesia, a segmental osteotomy of the hypoplastic alveolar process has been performed. Distraction of the hypoplastic alveolar process has been achieved by orthodontic traction on the residual dentition in the segments. After sufficient augmentation of the alveolar process, 6 implan

An evaluation of two-phase treatment with the Herbst appliance and preadjusted edgewise therapy.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the skeletal and dentoalveolar changes occurring during two-phase orthodontic treatment. A cephalometric study of Class II correction was carried out in 40 subjects (20 females, 20 males) who had been treated with the acrylic-splint Herbst appliance immediately followed by a second phase of preadjusted edgewise therapy. The average age at the start of Herbst therapy was 12.5 +/- 0.8 years for females and 13.6 +/- 1.2 years for males. Descriptive cephalometric data were compared with the normative values derived from the University of Michigan Elementar

Multidisciplinary approach to obstructive sleep apnoea: a case report.

Obstructive sleep apnoea is a well recognized clinical problem. This paper presents a case in which a joint orthodontic and surgical approach was used to diagnose and treat a patient suffering from this condition. Initially these cases could be treated with a conservative approach, which has a potential role in establishing a diagnosis.

A comparison of one-stage and two-stage nonextraction alternatives in matched Class II samples.

In the treatment of Class II malocclusion, an early phase of functional appliance treatment is commonly used to simplify subsequent fixed appliance therapy and to optimize the development of the facial skeleton. Unfortunately, these expectations enjoy little support in the refereed literature. The present study therefore was undertaken to examine the benefits of a two-stage bionator/edgewise regimen in comparison to the more conventional one-stage edgewise alternative. To minimize proficiency bias, we examined the records of the one- and two-stage Class II nonextraction patients who received t
