Why have multiple cortical areas?

Image processing requires free access to information about all parts of an image, but a nerve cell in V1 can only interact directly with a tiny fraction of the other cells in V1. The problem this poses might be alleviated by forming secondary "neural images" in which information is re-arranged, and some possible rules of projection for forming such images are explored. It is also suggested that all parts of the cerebral cortex detect, and subsequently signal, suspicious coincidences in their inputs. Acquiring knowledge of the associative structure of sensory messages, in the form of the unexpe

A photographic perspective on the origins, form, course and relations of the acetylcholinesterase-containing fibres of the dorsal tegmental pathway in the rat brain.

The dorsal tegmental pathway in the rat brain has been studied using acetylcholinesterase (AChe) staining alone, after lesions, and combined with the horseradish-peroxidase (HRP) tracing method. This paper characterises in photographs, diagrams and text the origins, form, extent and relations of its visible AChe-staining fibres in 3 planes. This record should provide a template for further investigations. The pathway largely takes origin from ChAT-containing pedunculopontine (PPTg) and laterodorsal (LDT) nuclei; some non-cholinergic cell groups may also contribute, notably locus coeruleus (LC)

Dopaminergic D-3 binding sites are not presynaptic autoreceptors.

Postsynaptic dopamine (DA) receptors have been classified biochemically and pharmacologically into two types: D-1 receptors mediate adenylate cyclase stimulation, demonstrating micromolar affinity for DA and butyrophenone antagonists; D-2 receptors mediate adenylate cyclase inhibition, demonstrating nanomolar affinity for DA and butyrophenone antagonists. D-1 receptors are labelled by 3H-thioxanthene antagonists, while D-2 receptors are labelled by both 3H-agonists and all 3H-antagonists. A third class of dopaminergic binding site, termed D-3, represents high-affinity 3H-agonist binding sites

Ultrastructural evidence for the existence of a direct hypothalamic--vagal descending pathway.

The ultrastructural changes in the presynaptic nerve terminals in the dorsal vagal nucleus were studied in rats with bilateral electrolytic lesions placed in the dorso-medio-caudal hypothalamic area in the sagittal plane of the dorsomedial nuclei, just behind these nuclei in the P3,5--P3,7 interval. On days 3, 4 and 5 following placement of the hypothalamic lesions, degeneration of some of the presynaptic profiles in the dorsal vagal nucleus was found in the experimental animals. The data obtained provide evidence for the existence of descending hypothalamic axons terminating in the medulla ob

Nodoventricular accessory atrioventricular connection associated with dual atrioventricular pathways: a case report and review of the literature.

A case is presented of a patient free from tachyarrhythmias or prior evidence of pre-excitation syndrome, in whom electrophysiologic study revealed evidence of dual AV nodal pathways associated with a nodoventricular bypass tract. Programmed atrial extrastimuli testing revealed that conduction through the fast AV nodal pathway was associated with a normal HV interval and normal QRS morphology. Conduction through the slow AV nodal pathway was always associated with a short HV interval and ventricular pre-excitation. No tachyarrhythmias could be induced with atrial extrastimuli or rapid atrial p

Thermosensory defects after cervical spinal cord lesions in the cat.

The behavioural thermosensitivity of cat paws was examined before and/or after restricted uni- and/or bilateral lesions had been made in the spinal cord between the first and fifth cervical segments. Unilateral lesions of the lateral funiculus, which involved at least its whole width at the level of the central canal, reproducibly were found to interfere with the contralateral sensitivity for temperature increases and/or decreases. No corresponding thermosensory deficiencies were found after unilateral lesions involving the ventral spinal quadrant or the dorsal funiculus. Various bilateral and

Organization of the thalamo-cortical connexions to the frontal lobe in the rhesus monkey.

In 25 rhesus monkeys horseradish peroxidase was injected in different parts of the frontal cortex. The retrogradely labelled thalamic neurons formed longitudinal bands, some of which crossed the internal medullary lamina, and extended from one thalamic nucleus into another. On the basis of these findings the frontal cortex was subdivided into seven transverse cortical strips which receive afferents from seven longitudinal bands of thalamic neurons. The most rostral transverse strip receives afferents from the most medial thalamic band which is oriented vertically and extends through the most m

Receptive fields of barrels in the somatosensory neocortex of the rat.

Peripheral receptive fields of "barrels" in the somatosensory neocortex (SmI) of rats were determined with microelectrope recording and anatomical techniques. A method of flattening each hemisphere prior to embedding was devised so that the organization of layer IV could be seen through the full extent of SmI on a single section. All of the barrels in the rat are located within layer IV of Smi. sinus hairs on the lateral and rostral face and furry buccal pad project to a continuous sheet of barrels in the head area of the contralateral SmI. Lamination and differential distribution of thalamic afferents within the sensory-motor cortex of the squirrel monkey.

The structure of the first somatic sensory area (areas 3, 1 and 2), of the motor area (area 4) and the intervening transitional field (area 3a) is described in the squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) using Nissl, Bodian, Weil and Golgi preparations. The laminar arrangement of both cells and axons is briefly described and this correlated with the distribution of thalamic afferents as identified in experiments conducted with the Nauta and autoradiographic techniques. The latter method was used particularly in order to assess quantitative differences in the density of thalamic projections to the f

Cerebellar cortical efferents of the posterior lobe vermis in a prosimian primate (Galago) and the tree shrew (Tupaia).

The topographical organization of cerebellar cortical efferents of the posterior lobe vermis was studied in a prosimian primate (Galago senegalensis) and the tree shrew (Tupaia glis). Two patterns emerge; one which shows longitudinal zones of the entire vermis and a second which shows that induvidual lobules within the overall longitudinal pattern terminate in specific areas of the ipsilateral medial cerebellar nucleus (NM) and vestibular complix. The posterior lobe vermis consists of a narrow midline portion which projects bilaterally into the NM and a paramidline zone which projects only int

Protein kinase A deficiency causes axially localized neural tube defects in mice.

We have studied the function of protein kinase A (PKA) during embryonic development using a PKA-deficient mouse that retains only one functional catalytic subunit allele, either Calpha or Cbeta, of PKA. The reduced PKA activity results in neural tube defects that are specifically localized posterior to the forelimb buds and lead to spina bifida. The affected neural tube has closed appropriately but exhibits an enlarged lumen and abnormal neuroepithelium. Decreased PKA activity causes dorsal expansion of Sonic hedgehog signal response in the thoracic to sacral regions correlating with the regio

Cardiac outflow tract malformations in chick embryos exposed to homocysteine.

OBJECTIVE: Increased homocysteine concentrations have been associated with cardiac outflow tract defects. It has been hypothesized that cardiac neural crest cells were the target cells in these malformations. Cardiac neural crest cells migrate from the neural tube and contribute to the condensed mesenchyme of the aorticopulmonary septum and outflow tract cushions of the heart. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of homocysteine on cardiac neural crest cells in relation to heart malformations. METHODS: Homocysteine was injected either into the neural tube lumen (30 micromol/l),

Pathways underlying afferent signaling of bronchopulmonary immune activation to the central nervous system.

Bronchopulmonary inflammation, such as that associated with asthma, activates afferent neural pathways. We recently demonstrated that localized inflammation in the lungs, induced by intratracheal administration of ovalbumin in ovalbumin-preimmunized mice (an animal model of asthma) results in activation of the dorsolateral part of the nucleus of the solitary tract, a major target of vagal afferent fibers innervating the lungs and airways. Activation of the nucleus of the solitary tract was evident in the absence of activation of the area postrema, a circumventricular organ, consistent with the…
