[Risk factors for the development of vision disorders in polymyalgia rheumatica with giant cell arteritis].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Visual disorders, even blindness, are serious complications of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) associated with temporal arteritis. Their early recognition in patients at high risk is essential to avoid the development of such visual disorders. It was the aim of this study to identify these risk factors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Clinical and laboratory data and biopsy findings in 131 patients (94 women, 37 men; mean age 74 years) with PMR and concomitant temporal arteritis were analysed retrospectively. RESULTS: Visual disorders occurred in 61 of the 131 patients. Temporal

Chiasmal syndrome in sarcoidosis.

Four patients had involvement of the anterior visual pathway by sarcoidosis. In two cases recognition of the systemic disease was delayed because only visual symptoms were present. Three cases had evidence of hypothalamic-pituitary axis dysfunction, with histologically proved granulomatous infiltration of this region. The chiasmal syndrome in sarcoidosis is characterized by a pattern of blindness in one eye, atrophy of the optic discs, and temporal visual field loss in the contralateral eye with variable degrees of pituitary dysfunction. The condition is medically treatable and simulates the c

Evaluation of visual performance and eye movements in patients with blue light-filtering intraocular lenses versus ultraviolet light-filtering intraocular lenses.

BACKGROUND: Eye movement plays an important role in visual perception and provides essential visual information for everyday tasks. Our previous study indicated that the visual performance and eye movement pattern were impaired in age-related cataract patients and could be improved after cataract surgery, but the impact of different intraocular lens (IOL) types was obscure. Previous studies found that blue light might affect the eye movement pattern and cognitive function. In this study, we explored the visual performance and eye movement pattern in post-cataract surgery patients implanted wit

The role of vision and proprioception in implicit and explicit self-movement recognition.

The recognition of one's own body is a fundamental component of body self-representation. While several studies have reported a self-advantage (enhanced performance when processing one's own body parts), this phenomenon appears complex and inconsistently observed across tasks. In particular, a self-advantage often emerges in implicit tasks, where self-recognition is incidental, whereas explicit self-recognition tasks sometimes reveal no advantage or even a self-disadvantage. Although previous research has examined various aspects of movement self-recognition, systematic investigations directly

Hemodynamic and electroencephalographic responses to illusory figures: recording of the evoked potentials during functional MRI.

The feasibility of recording event-related potentials (ERP) during functional MRI (fMRI) scanning using higher level cognitive stimuli was studied. Using responses to illusory figures in a visual oddball task, evoked potentials were obtained with their expected configurations and latencies. A rapid stimulation scheme using randomly varied trial lengths was employed, and class-wise characteristics of the hemodynamic response were obtained by a nonlinear analysis of the fMRI time series. Implications and limitations of conducting combined ERP-fMRI experiments using higher level cognitive stimuli

Outline drawing across dimensions: Recognizing minimal-information artefacts in 2D and 3D.

Human visual recognition critically depends on edge-based information, which forms the fundamental cues for identifying objects by their outlines and shapes. Where two-dimensional studies have established that line drawings enable recognition performance comparable to full-color images, the extension of these principles to three-dimensional artefacts within immersive virtual reality (VR) remains underexplored. The precise impact of 3D visualization on recognition accuracy, especially under conditions of minimal visual cues, raises unresolved questions about how the human visual system integrat

Bilateral retinal implants for improving visual restoration: a simulated bionic vision study.

Degenerative diseases of the retina produce a severe deterioration in visual perception. Visual prostheses enable partial vision restoration by eliciting phosphenes (perceived spots of light) through electrical stimulation. By using augmented reality (AR) to simulate bionic vision (SBV), this study aims to provide insights on the potential benefits of bilateral retinal implants. While monocular implants have been extensively studied, research on binocular implants remains limited. Twenty-four volunteers participated in this study, and were divided into two groups, SBV-monocular and SBV-binocul

Visual functions in non-overlapping visual field defects: dichoptic experiments in healthy subjects with simulated scotomas.

In clinical care, glaucoma patients are often assumed to have normal vision as long as each point of visual space is seen normally by at least one eye. Recent studies have challenged this assumption. In glaucoma, visual perception of spatially fragmented binocular input may be altered by long-term neural adaptation and by acute sensory effects. These two components cannot be disentangled easily in glaucoma patients, but the latter component can be isolated with simulated visual field defects in healthy subjects. Therefore, the aim of this study was to find out if simulated non-overlapping visu

Diminished orientation-specific surround suppression of visual processing in schizophrenia.

Visual perception of a stimulus is a function of the visual context in which it is displayed. Surround suppression is a specific form of contextual modulation whereby the perceived contrast of a center stimulus is decreased by a high-contrast surround. Recent studies have demonstrated that individuals with schizophrenia are less prone to visual contextual effects, suggesting impairments in cortical lateral connectivity. We tested whether altered contextual modulation in schizophrenia is stimulus orientation selective. Participants viewed an annulus consisting of contrast-reversing sinusoidal g

Visual association pathways in human brain.

Visual information processing are realized by the posterior association cortex spreading in front of the striate and parastriate areas from which two major visual association pathways arise. The dorsal or the occipito-parietal pathway which transmits the inputs from the peripheral as well as the central visual field to the parietal association cortex is responsible for the visuospatial analysis of the visual informations. The occipito-temporal or the ventral pathway originates only from the foveal vision area, and sends the visual inputs to the inferior temporal lobe which engages in visual pa

Spatially invariant coding of numerical information in functionally defined subregions of human parietal cortex.

Macaque electrophysiology has revealed neurons responsive to number in lateral (LIP) and ventral (VIP) intraparietal areas. Recently, fMRI pattern recognition revealed information discriminative of individual numbers in human parietal cortex but without precisely localizing the relevant sites or testing for subregions with different response profiles. Here, we defined the human functional equivalents of LIP (feLIP) and VIP (feVIP) using neurophysiologically motivated localizers. We applied multivariate pattern recognition to investigate whether both regions represent numerical information and

Left hemiparalexia of Chinese characters: neglect dyslexia or disruption of pathway of visual word form processing?

The objective of the study was to further elucidate the potential mechanisms underlying left hemiparalexia induced by a splenium lesion in corpus callosum. A patient KY, who had infarctions in the splenium and the left ventral medial occipitotemporal area, was examined with neuropsychological tests and fMRI. KY presented left hemiparalexia when he read aloud characters presented in central foveal field tachistoscopically as well as in free-view field. KY also showed left hemialexia for characters in left visual field, while no left hemiparalexia occurred when characters were presented in the r

Visual pattern adaptation in subjects with photoparoxysmal EEG response: evidence for increased visual cortical excitability.

PURPOSE: Photosensitivity, or photoparoxysmal response (PPR), is an abnormal EEG reaction to intermittent photic stimulation (IPS), consisting of spikes, spike-waves, and intermittent slow waves. Depending on the spread of the abnormal activity, PPR subgroups have been defined as having either propagating PPR or localized, occipital spikes (OS) only. Recent research suggests an enhanced excitability in the occipital cortex may underlie this reaction during IPS, but it remains unclear whether changes in excitability affect the function of the occipital cortex to other, less provocative visual s

Lateralized visual hallucinations: an analysis of affective valence.

Visual formaesthesias (hallucinations) are a common symptom of neurological insult. Research on emotional valances and the laterality of emotional valence extends to clinical populations experiencing visual hallucinations. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the relationship of reported hemispace of visual formaesthesia and associated emotional valence. Based on current literature exploring asymmetries in the processing of emotional valence, it was predicted that right visual formaesthesias would be predominantly associated with positive emotion and that left visual formaesthesias woul

A Generic Mechanism for Perceptual Organization in the Parietal Cortex.

Our visual system's ability to group visual elements into meaningful entities and to separate them from others is referred to as scene segmentation. Visual motion often provides a powerful cue for this process as parallax or coherence can inform the visual system about scene or object structure. Here we tested the hypothesis that scene segmentation by motion cues relies on a common neural substrate in the parietal cortex. We used fMRI and a set of three entirely distinct motion stimuli to examine scene segmentation in the human brain. The stimuli covered a wide range of high-level processes, i

Effective Connectivity from Early Visual Cortex to Posterior Occipitotemporal Face Areas Supports Face Selectivity and Predicts Developmental Prosopagnosia.

UNLABELLED: Face processing is mediated by interactions between functional areas in the occipital and temporal lobe, and the fusiform face area (FFA) and anterior temporal lobe play key roles in the recognition of facial identity. Individuals with developmental prosopagnosia (DP), a lifelong face recognition impairment, have been shown to have structural and functional neuronal alterations in these areas. The present study investigated how face selectivity is generated in participants with normal face processing, and how functional abnormalities associated with DP, arise as a function of netwo

Functional characterisation of the extrastriate body area based on the N1 ERP component.

Electrophysiological and functional neuroimaging evidence points to the existence of neural populations that respond strongly and selectively to the appearance of the human body and its parts. However, the relationship between ERP and fMRI markers of these populations remains unclear. Here we used a previously identified functional dissociation between two body-selective regions identified with fMRI (extrastriate body area or EBA; fusiform body area or FBA) in order to better understand the source of a body-selective N1 ERP component. Specifically, we compared the magnitude of the N1 elicited

Bees use three-dimensional information to improve target detection.

Bumblebee detection of a flat circular disc (two-dimensional (2D) presentation) and a disc which was presented 10 cm in front of a structured background (and thus provided three-dimensional (3D) cues) was compared. A dual choice test using a Y-maze apparatus was conducted to estimate the minimum visual angle at which the bees were able to detect the disc. At large visual angles of 15, 10 and 5 degrees bees' performance between the 2D and the 3D presentation did not differ. However, when the disc subtended 3 degrees at the bee's eye, the bees performed significantly better when 3D information w

Emerging neurophysiological specialization for letter strings.

In adult readers, printed words and other letter strings activate specialized visual functions within 200 msec, as evident from neurophysiological recordings of brain activity. These fast, specialized responses to letter strings are thought to develop through plastic changes in the visual system. However, it is unknown whether this specialization emerges only with the onset of word reading, or represents a precursor of literacy. We compared 6-year-old kindergarten children who could not yet read words to adult readers. Both age groups detected immediate repetitions of visually presented words,

Cognitive changes in short-term hypothyroidism assessed with event-related brain potentials.

Hypothyroidism is a common clinical problem during (131)Iodine-therapy of thyroid cancer. In the present investigation, possible cognitive dysfunction during hypothyroid state was assessed by means of neuropsychological tests and the recording of event-related brain potentials (ERPs). Fifteen patients undergoing therapy for thyroid cancer were examined twice: (1) substituted with thyroid hormones, (2) during hypothyroid state immediately prior to treatment. Standard neuropsychological tests were applied during both sessions and subjects showed a mild-to-moderate impairment in their hypothyroid
