Social perception in deaf individuals: A meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies.

Deaf individuals may report difficulties in social interactions. However, whether these difficulties depend on deafness affecting social brain circuits is controversial. Here, we report the first meta-analysis comparing brain activations of hearing and (prelingually) deaf individuals during social perception. Our findings showed that deafness does not impact on the functional mechanisms supporting social perception. Indeed, both deaf and hearing control participants recruited regions of the action observation network during performance of different social tasks employing visual stimuli, and in…

Ceiling effects for speech perception tests in pediatric cochlear implant users.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of ceiling effects for commonly used speech perception tests in a large population of children who received a cochlear implant (CI) before the age of four. A secondary goal was to determine the demographic factors that were relevant for predicting which children were more likely to reach ceiling level performance. We hypothesize that ceiling effects are highly prevalent for most tests. DESIGN: Retrospective chart review of children receiving a CI between 2002 and 2014. RESULTS: 165 children were included. Median scores wer…

Correlations between weight perception and overt risk-taking among Canadian adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Perceptions of body weight represent an important health issue for Canadian adolescents. While associations between weight perception and mental health concerns like eating disorder symptomatology are well established, there is need for more Canadian evidence about how weight perception is associated with overt risk-taking among adolescents, and further how such associations differ by biological sex. METHODS: We conducted a national analysis of grade 9-10 students participating in the 2017-2018 cycle of the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study in Canada. This analy…

Self-Perception of Cognitive-Communication Functions After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

PURPOSE: A mixed-method approach was used to investigate the lived experiences of adults with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The study aimed to understand the perceived relationship between cognitive-communication problems, thinking and communication concerns, and neurobehavioral symptoms. We hypothesized that individuals with cognitive-communication problems would attribute their problems with communication to their mTBI history and their self-perceived problems would be correlated with symptomatology. METHOD: The Neurobehavioral Symptom Inventory (NSI) and an online cognitive-communica

Assessment of the perception of vertical subjectivity in children born preterm.

Children born preterm have increased rates of paediatric mortality and morbidity. Prematurity has been associated with impaired visual perception and visuo-motor integration. The alteration of the perception of verticality translates into alterations of the vestibular system at central and/or peripheral level, which may manifest itself in symptoms such as imbalance, dizziness or even vertigo. The aim of this study was to compare subjective visual vertical (SVV) test scores in children born preterm with those of children born at term at ages between 7 and 10. One hundred ten children with no ne…

Validating models of sensory conflict and perception for motion sickness prediction.

The human motion perception system has long been linked to motion sickness through state estimation conflict terms. However, to date, the extent to which available perception models are able to predict motion sickness, or which of the employed perceptual mechanisms are of most relevance to sickness prediction, has not been studied. In this study, the subjective vertical model, the multi-sensory observer model and the probabilistic particle filter model were all validated for their ability to predict motion perception and sickness, across a large set of motion paradigms of varying complexity fr…

[Moyamoya in Aragon: epidemiology and self-perception of quality of life].

INTRODUCTION: Moyamoya angiopathy is a vasculopathy caused by stenosis/occlusion of one or both intracranial internal carotid arteries. Although more common in Eastern countries, its prevalence is increasing in the West. An angioresonance or angiography is essential for its diagnosis. There are two options for treatment: conservative (medical) treatment or surgical bypass techniques. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients were selected using International Classification of Diseases codes, and their demographic characteristics and health outcomes were studied. They were administered a scale f

Form, Function, Perception, and Reception: Visual Bioethics and the Artificial Womb.

Artificial wombs are already in development that have the potential to radically alter how we perceive the developing fetus and the role of pregnancy in society. That this technology would allow greater visibility of gestation than ever before also highlights the risk that artificial wombs will be used to further restrict women's reproductive liberty and access to abortion. This article uses Paul Lauritzen's theory of "visual bioethics" to explore the ethical significance of images of the developing fetus and how artificial wombs might best be visually designed and integrated into society.

Provider's Perception of Parental Anxiety in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Parents of critically ill children in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) commonly experience new or worsening anxiety, which can lead to long-term sequelae in the form of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). To investigate how well the PICU providers recognize and assess parental anxiety, we assessed the acute and baseline anxiety level of 30 parents in the PICU with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and compared the results with the PICU physician's and nurses' assessments. All but four parents experienced higher acute anxiety scores compared to baseline, with a 34% increase in

Psychometric approach to evaluate periodontal disease using Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire.

INTRODUCTION: Illness perception is the cognitive representation of an illness, which determines how a person responds to it. The Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire (IPQ-R) assesses seven components of illness representation in various chronic diseases, but queries prevail about its factor structure. The study assesses the components of illness representation in patients with chronic periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 625 voluntary, consecutive dental patients with a clinical diagnosis of periodontitis were recruited into the study. The Hindi version of IPQ-R was used, con…

Self-perception in anorexia nervosa: When the body becomes an object.

OBJECTIVE: Women with anorexia nervosa (AN) act as if they have a larger body, as evidenced in obstacle avoidance tasks, where an allocentric perspective is adopted. This alteration emerges not only when they perform, but also when they imagine movements. However, no previous study has investigated own body centered tasks. As such, in this study we aim at documenting if women with AN show an altered behaviour also when the task requires a first-person perspective. METHOD: We explored the performance of eleven woman affected by AN compared to eighteen matched controls, in two motor imagery tas

Combined Multi-Atlas and Multi-Layer Perception for Alzheimer's Disease Classification.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive and irreversible neurodegenerative disease. To distinguish the stage of the disease, AD classification technology challenge has been proposed in Pattern Recognition and Computer Vision 2021 (PRCV 2021) which provides the gray volume and average cortical thickness data extracted in multiple atlases from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Traditional methods either train with convolutional neural network (CNN) by MRI data to adapt the spatial features of images or train with recurrent neural network (RNN) by temporal features to predict the next stage.
