A multimodal investigation of a pink-discoloured canine tooth in a jaguar (Panthera onca): a clinical, computed tomographic, microstructural, ultrastructural, and computer-aided design/ computer-aided manufacturing prosthodontic reconstruction study.

Wild animals in captivity are prone to developing dental diseases. Pink-discoloured canine teeth in jaguars are often seen in wildlife photographs but are rarely reported in the literature, and none have been formally investigated. Within 24 h post-mortem, the oral cavity of a zoo jaguar was investigated using computed tomography (CT). One pink-discoloured canine tooth was atraumatically extracted, fixed, and stained for histological and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) examination. The intravitam pink-discoloured canine tooth exhibited no evidence of periodontal or periapical lesions. M

Development and Validation of Chinese Version of Dental Pain Screening Questionnaire.

INTRODUCTION: Dental pain is one of the most prevalent oral complaints. This study aimed to establish a Chinese version of Dental Pain Screening Questionnaire (DePaQ) to help classify patients into three groups of dental pain diseases (group 1, reversible pulpitis and dentine hypersensitivity; group 2, acute periapical periodontitis and irreversible pulpitis; and group 3, pericoronitis). METHODS: The DePaQ was translated from English to Chinese. The clinical subjects (CS, n = 290) and nonclinical subjects (NS, n = 100) with dental pain were collected. The CS were randomly divided into two sub…

Concentrated Growth Factors for Managing a Nonvital Maxillary Central Incisor With an Open Apex.

Apexification procedure on a necrotic, infected tooth with an open apex is achievable if the canal is adequately disinfected. This case report aims to add an endodontic case to the body of knowledge currently available on the application of concentrated growth factor (CGF). A 24-year-old man with a history of a fall 15 years earlier developed apical periodontitis and pulpal necrosis in his maxillary central incisor with an open apex. Following the preparation of the access cavity, a solution containing 20 mL of sodium hypochlorite solution (5.25%) and 10 mL of 0.2% chlorhexidine was used to ir

Biological characteristics and whole-genome analysis of the Enterococcus faecalis phage PEf771.

Enterococcus faecalis is a common pathogen causing refractory periapical periodontitis and secondary intraradicular infections. In this study, E. faecalis YN771 isolated from a re-treated root canal at a stomatology department was used as the host bacterium and was co-cultured with wastewater from the same department and patient samples to isolate a phage that lyses E. faecalis. We studied the biological and genomic characteristics of this phage. Transmission electron microscopy showed that this phage's head is icosahedral in structure, with a head diameter of around 98.4 nm, and a contractile…

Outcome of Autotransplantation of Mature Third Molars Using 3-dimensional-printed Guiding Templates and Donor Tooth Replicas.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Autotransplantation exhibits a number of advantages compared with other treatment options (ie, dental implants or fixed partial prostheses), such as greater resistance to occlusal loading, maintenance of the periodontal ligament and surrounding bone, and the potential for better esthetics. The aim of this study was to determine clinical outcomes for autotransplanted teeth with complete root formation using 3-dimensional-printed guiding templates and tooth replicas. Twenty-seven third molars with completely formed roots were autotransplanted. Each donor tooth and recipient site were examined cl

A history of frequent dental care reduces the risk of tooth loss but not periodontitis in older subjects.

OBJECTIVES: Information on the significance of dental care in older adults is limited. We hypothesized that regular dental visits has an effect on the number of remaining teeth and periodontal conditions in older subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 1020 randomly selected individuals age 60 - 96 from the Swedish National Study on Aging and Care Blekinge received a comprehensive oral health examination. RESULTS: Dentate women and men had, on average 18.4 teeth (SD +7.6,) and 18.9 teeth (SD + 7.5) respectively (NS). In the youngest group (60 and 66 years old) with less than one dental visit per ye

A clinical study of formocresol pulpotomy versus root canal therapy of vital primary incisors.

OBJECTIVES: Pulpotomy of primary incisors is a serious challenge due to the lack of a distinct boundary between the coronal and the radicular pulp and the inaccuracy of the clinical indication criteria. The aim of the present study is the clinical and radiographic evaluation of pulpotomy versus root canal therapy (RCT) of vital primary incisors. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 100 incisors in 50 patients (female: 27, male: 23) aged 3-4 years were allocated to formocresol pulpotomy (45 teeth) and RCT (46 teeth) using zinc oxide-eugenol. A multivariate analysis of the outcome of endodontic treatment.

In the present study, multivariate analyses were performed on clinical and treatment variables that may influence the outcome of endodontic treatment. Data collected in a previous clinical-radiographic follow-up study were used. Of 810 treated, 675 roots in 498 teeth were followed for 6 months to 4 yr. Of these, 192 (the CAP group) had pre-existing, chronic apical periodontitis and 483 (the NAP group) had not. Root canal treatment followed a standard procedure with one of three sealers chosen at random. Demographic, clinical and radiographic variables were recorded at the start of, and during

Management of severe partial hypodontia: case report.

Hypodontia is characterized by partial or total congenital missing of one or more teeth, on one or both dentitions. Heredity is the main etiological factor and the principal clinical features are reduction on number, size and form of teeth, and late eruption. Removable partial prosthesis, fixed prosthesis, overdentures and adhesive prosthesis are alternative treatments; and the indication is type dependent. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical case of an eleven-year-old child with eight missing permanent teeth of idiopathic etiology. The patient had facial and skeletal symmetry,

Non-invasive computed tomography and three-dimensional reconstruction of the dentition of a 2,800-year-old Egyptian mummy exhibiting extensive dental disease.

A second CT scan of the mummy Djedmaatesankh, which is housed in the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, Ontario, has been undertaken after an interval of some 15 years. The image data set of her dentition and the associated tissues acquired from 3 mm thick x 3 mm spacing slices was transferred to an ISG Allegro work station where two-dimensional reformats and three-dimensional reconstructions were produced. This non-invasive examination provided information on dental disease that is, in a number of respects, an advance on that which previously could be obtained from mummies by the traditional meth

Endodontic Treatment of Apical Periodontitis Mitigates Systemic Inflammation and Restores the Blood-Brain Barrier Integrity in an In Vitro Model.

AIM: A growing body of research supports an association between periapical inflammation and an increased risk of various systemic effects. However, there is currently no scientific evidence demonstrating a causal relationship between this inflammation and changes in epithelial or endothelial permeability in patients with apical periodontitis (AP). This study aimed to evaluate the potential association between AP, circulating inflammatory cytokines known to affect cellular permeability, and serum proteins associated with an impaired cellular barrier permeability. Additionally, we investigated t

The Führer's Teeth: Oral Health, Dental Prosthetics, and the Forensic Identification of Adolf Hitler.

Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) presents one of the most thoroughly documented cases of progressive oral disease in modern European history, remarkable not only for its clinical severity but for the extraordinary forensic consequences to which that clinical condition gave rise. By the final year of his life, Hitler retained only 4 of his natural teeth; the remainder of his dentition had been replaced by an elaborate network of gold crowns, bridges, and prosthetic elements constructed and maintained by his personal dentist, Professor Hugo Johannes Blaschke (1881-1959), a graduate of the University of

Management of a Late Complication of Strip Perforation with Overextended Gutta-percha Using Intentional Replantation: A 10-Year Follow-up Case Report.

Strip perforation is a severe procedural complication during root canal therapy, often associated with poor prognosis, especially when combined with overextended gutta-percha. While surgical or nonsurgical retreatment is commonly indicated, patient-centered decision-making and long-term follow-up may influence the management strategy. This case report describes the conservative follow-up and eventual successful treatment of a mandibular second molar with an extensive midroot strip perforation and extruded gutta-percha, ultimately managed with intentional replantation and root-end filling using

Systemic Health Associations of Apical Periodontitis: A Systematic Review of Observational Studies.

Apical periodontitis (AP) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the periapical tissues, often caused by pulp necrosis. While primarily localized in the oral cavity, evidence suggests that AP may contribute to systemic inflammation, influencing conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, pregnancy complications, osteoporosis, and autoimmune disorders. This review examines the association between AP and various systemic health conditions. A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and EMBASE was conducted, focusing on observational studies reporting systemic outcomes in individuals with AP
