Telehealth Versus In-Person Caregiver-Mediated Behavioral Treatment for Challenging Behaviors in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Protocol for COACH (Caregiver Outreach for Autism Coaching at Home) Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 40%-60% of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibit challenging behaviors such as aggression, elopement, self-injury, and property destruction that can endanger the health and safety of the child or others, often cause significant distress for families, and hinder the child's developmental progress. Although behavioral treatments grounded in the principles of applied behavior analysis have been shown to effectively reduce or eliminate these behaviors, significant gaps remain in how to deliver these interventions equitably. OBJECTIVE: This study

Association between profiles of psychopathy and externalizing problems in Chinese children: A longitudinal moderated mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Psychopathy is often significantly associated with serious externalizing problems, and childhood is a critical period in the development of psychopathy. However, the associations between profiles of psychopathy and children's externalizing problems remain unclear. METHODS: A total of 2141 Chinese children from a mid-sized city in South China participated in assessments at three time points, using six-month assessment intervals. Latent profile analysis and moderated mediation analysis were employed to analyze the data. RESULTS: Three profiles of psychopathy were identified and nam

Cortisol Reactivity as a Moderator in the Relationship Between Home Chaos and Conduct Problems: Gender-Specific Evidence from Chinese Preschoolers.

This study aimed to explore the moderating role of cortisol stress reactivity in the relationship between home chaos and child conduct problems among Chinese preschoolers, and further reveal these moderating patterns in boys and girls. The researchers employed a longitudinal design, surveying 160 preschool-aged children (73 boys, 87 girls) and their parents at two separate time points annually. The findings revealed a positive correlation between home chaos and child conduct problems, with cortisol stress reactivity acting as a significant moderator. Further analysis showed that low cortisol r

Pupil Response to Affective Stimuli: a Biomarker of Early Conduct Problems in Young Children.

Childhood conduct problems have been associated with reduced autonomic arousal to negative cues indicative of an insensitivity to aversive stimuli, with mixed evidence in response to positive cues. Autonomic arousal to affective stimuli has traditionally been measured through galvanic skin responses and heart-rate, despite evidence that pupillometry is more reliable and practically beneficial (i.e., no wires are attached to the participant). The current study is the first to examine abnormal pupillary responsivity to affective stimuli as a biomarker for childhood conduct problems. We measured

Exploring the neurocognitive correlates of challenging behaviours in young people with autism spectrum disorder.

Many young people with autism spectrum disorder display 'challenging behaviours', characterised by externalising behaviour and self-injurious behaviours. These behaviours can have a negative impact on a young person's well-being, family environment and educational achievement. However, the development of effective interventions requires greater knowledge of autism spectrum disorder-specific models of challenging behaviours. Autism spectrum disorder populations are found to demonstrate impairments in different cognitive domains, namely social domains, such as theory of mind and emotion recognit

The emotional and behavioural symptom trajectories of children in long-term out-of-home care in an English local authority.

The significant mental health needs of young people in out-of-home care has been well-documented. However, there is little empirical evidence on the timing or development of these difficulties, once these young people have been removed from the maltreatment-environment. Such information may provide useful clinical insight in to how problems develop and persist and whether intervention timings may allow for the prevention of later mental health problems. The current service-data study explored the emotional and behavioural symptom trajectories of 207 young people under the long-term care of a l

Moderators of Parent Training for Disruptive Behaviors in Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

We conducted a 6 month, randomized trial of parent training (PT) versus a parent education program (PEP) in 180 young children (158 boys, 22 girls), ages 3-7 years, with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). PT was superior to PEP in decreasing disruptive and noncompliant behaviors. In the current study, we assess moderators of treatment response in this trial. Thirteen clinical and demographic variables were evaluated as potential moderators of three outcome variables: the Aberrant Behavior Checklist-Irritability subscale (ABC-I), Home Situations Questionnaire (HSQ), and Clinical Global Impressions

Do High and Low Extremes of ADHD and ASD Trait Continua Represent Maladaptive Behavioral and Cognitive Outcomes? A Population-Based Study.

OBJECTIVE: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are thought to reflect the high, symptomatic extreme of quantitative trait continua. However, extreme deviations in either direction on disorder continua, high and low, may both represent maladaptive behavioral and cognitive outcomes. We aimed to test this hypothesis. METHOD: In a population sample of 378 children, ADHD and ASD traits were rated by parents on questionnaires that provide resolution at high and low extremes of the ADHD and ASD trait continua. ADHD and ASD traits were related to parent

Coordination success and interpersonal perceptions: matching versus mismatching.

Coordination is an essential part of social functioning. The authors distinguish 2 types of coordination: matching and mismatching. In matching, coordination is successful if parties choose the same action. In mismatching, coordination is successful if people choose different actions. In 3 studies, the authors investigated the downstream social consequences of tacit coordination for interpersonal perceptions. In all studies, participants repeatedly choose between 2 bets with equivalent expected values, and payoffs increased either when they choose the same bet or when they choose different bet

Somatic sensations, anxiety, and control in panic disorder.

This case study of a woman with panic disorder with agoraphobia illustrates the relationships among somatic sensations, anxiety, and the subjective sense of control, and of these three factors to panic disorder. Helping the client alter her caffeine intake and dietary habits led to a significant reduction in panic attacks, but had less impact on her anxiety levels and sense of control. In the second stage of treatment, enhancing the client's sense of control through problem-solving training led to lower levels of anxiety. Implications for treatment and the prevention of relapse in panic disord

Social network and behaviour problems among 11-13-year-old schoolchildren. A theoretical and empirical basis for network therapy.

On the basis of theories concerning the relation of the social network to health and behaviour (e.g., social ecology, systems theory, and susceptibility theory), a theoretical model has been developed to understand the influence of the social network on children's behaviour problems in school. In western societies, children may participate in a number of different groups, such as the family, and school, neighbours, and so on. These groups may have different values, ideals and norms, etc. such differences may be assumed to promote the child's development, but they may also give rise to difficul

Cognitive factors in the social skills of schizophrenic patients: implications for treatment.

This chapter illustrates how changes have occurred in a clinical research program designed to develop and evaluate treatment techniques for improving the social skills of chronic schizophrenic patients. These changes have been primarily in the definition of a socially skilled response; rather than defining such responses solely in terms of motor behaviors, we have attempted to include several cognitive elements hypothesized to be critical aspects of the process of producing an effective social response. The inclusion of these cognitive elements suggests that the findings of experimental psycho

Good learners or trouble makers? Study on the relationship between academic performance and antisocial behavior of junior high school students.

The school bullying incident has aroused widespread concern in current society. How to manage students' anti-social behavior has become an increasingly serious problem for administrators. This study uses a sample of 8270 junior high school students to examine the mechanism of academic achievement on students' antisocial behavior. The results showed that academic performance has a U-shaped impact on antisocial behavior. This study further found that the U-shaped effect of academic performance on antisocial behavior was mediated by the praise; In addition, this study also found that moral identi

Differences in developmental problems between victims of different types of child maltreatment.

This study examined differences in developmental problems between children who were victims of two child maltreatment dimensions: abuse versus neglect, and physical versus emotional maltreatment. Family demographics and developmental problems were examined in a clinical sample of 146 Dutch children from families involved in a Multisystemic Therapy - Child Abuse and Neglect treatment trajectory. No differences were found in child behavior problems within the dimension abuse versus neglect. However, more externalizing behavior problems (e.g., aggressive problems) were found in children who exper

Homelessness and its relation to the mental health and behavior of low-income school-age children.

This study examined the relationship between housing status and depression, anxiety, and problem behaviors among children age 6 and older who were members of low-income, single-parent, female-headed families. Participants were 80 homeless and 148 never homeless children living in Worcester, Massachusetts. Children in both groups had recently been exposed to various severe stressors. Mother-reported problem behaviors were above normative levels for both homeless and poor housed youths but self-reported depression and anxiety were not. Controlling for other explanatory variables, housing status …

Have you been sexually harassed in school? What female high school students regard as harassment.

The aim of the study was to explore what behaviors experienced from peers and school staff at school are acknowledged as sexual harassment, and perceived as problematic, by female high school students, and what other factors may be relevant. Analyses were performed of responses (to 540 questionnaires) in an anonymous self-report mail survey from a random sample of female Swedish high-school students (59% response rate). Exposure to relevant behaviors, of varying levels of severity, alone, does not explain the acknowledgment of harassment. Many students were subjected to many of the potentially

A disparate role of RP11-424C20.2/UHRF1 axis through control of tumor immune escape in liver hepatocellular carcinoma and thymoma.

BACKGROUND: Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are at-risk for sleep and behavior problems, and their parents are at-risk for high stress. Child sleep duration, behavior problems, and parenting stress are interrelated; however, directionality of these associations is unclear and research including youth with ASD is lacking. Using a day-to-day, within-person design, this study explores the directionality of these relationships in families of children with ASD. METHOD: Twenty-six children (ages 3-5, 73.1% male, 65.4% Hispanic/Latino) with ASD and their mothers participated in a 14-day st

Early initiation of sex and its lack of association with risk behaviors among adolescent African-Americans.

OBJECTIVE: High rates of adolescent homicide, pregnancy, substance abuse, and sexually transmitted diseases underscore the importance of interventions designed to reduce problem behaviors. However, the definition of "problem" behavior and the association with other activities may change between youth cultures. Therefore, greater attention to defining the "problem" behaviors to be targeted will permit more effective utilization of primary vs secondary intervention strategies and identification of high-risk individuals. DESIGN: Two studies of African-American adolescents regarding sexual interc…
