Postural sway following inversion sprain of the ankle.

The single-limb sway of 20 individuals with a history of unilateral inversion ankle sprain was compared to that of a control group of 30 individuals without a history of ankle sprain. Using a force platform to obtain center-of-pressure data, the linear distance traveled (mm) and the mean power frequency, (Hz) of postural sway were calculated for each subject. The results of this study showed that postural sway amplitude was significantly greater in the injured group than in the control group. Contrary to previous investigations, this study indicates that individuals with a history of inversion

Vection and simulator sickness.

Simulator sickness has been identified as a form of motion sickness in which users of simulators exhibit symptoms characteristic of true motion sickness. In a fixed-base simulator, visual and vestibular sources of information specifying dynamic orientation are in conflict to the extent that the optical flow pattern viewed by the pilot creates a compelling illusion of self-motion, which is not corroborated by the inertial forces transmitted through the vestibular sense organs. Visually induced illusory self-motion is known as vection, and a strict interpretation of sensory conflict theory of mo

Cervical vertigo. Diagnostic and semiological problem with special emphasis upon "cervical nystagmus".

There is a strong evidence that vertigo can be produced by cervical disturbance, either via the neck-proprioceptor, or via the vascular supply by the vertebral artery. However, it is very difficult to confirm the cervical origin of the vertigo in a particular patient. "Cervical nystagmus" has been proposed as a diagnostic clue. But critical analysis, discussed in this paper, has raised doubt about its reliability. The most know type, the neck torsion nystagmus, appears to be in fact a "normal" cervico-ocular reflex. Its inconstancy and low gain makes that it is only present in 50% of the subje

Osteochondritis dissecans of the vertebral endplate of C5 with concomitant C4-C5 disc protrusion in a French Bulldog.

A 4-year-old French bulldog was presented with neck pain and left forelimb lameness. CT scan revealed a bony defect in the craniodorsal rim of the endplate of C5 with a concomitant disc protrusion leading to ventral spinal cord compression. Ventral slot at C4-C5 was performed to remove the protruding material and the fragment. Based on CT and histological findings, this bone defect was consistent with osteochondritis dissecans. Neck pain was absent immediately after the operation and the dog recovered without complication. Only a slight proprioceptive deficit of the left forelimb persisted dur

Foot and Ankle Conditions: Chronic Lateral Ankle Pain.

Chronic ankle pain is relatively common in family medicine. Sequelae from lateral ankle sprains are the most common cause. Other etiologies include peroneal tendinopathy or subluxation, osteochondral injury, lateral ankle impingement, sinus tarsi syndrome, cuboid syndrome, bony stress injury, and other unusual factors. A thorough history focusing on the mechanism of injury (if traumatic) and the nature of the pain along with a targeted physical examination typically will provide the information needed to make the diagnosis. Imaging might be necessary for diagnosis or confirmation of the diagno

[The dependence of motor response time in discrimination task on the type of available visual information].

The interaction of proprioceptive and visual afferentation was studied in motor task for discrimination of weights of falling objects. The availability of visual information decreased the time of motor response but to different extent depending on the kind of this information. The shortening of response time was significantly greater when subject have seen the beginning of real fall that when he simply seen the control LED signaling the release of object by electromagnet. So, subject accomplishes the task of discrimination of light and heavy object more efficiently if he sees the real falling

[Certain aspects of combined vibration training for the treatment of neurological manifestations of osteochondrosis in the lumbar spine region].

The physical rehabilitation of the patients presenting with neurological manifestations of osteochondrosis in the lumbar spine region remains a challenging problem due to the high prevalence of this condition. Vibration training in the form of graduated vibration impacts was shownto induce muscular stimulation, activate metabolic processes by promoting microcirculation, stimulate operation of the complex proprioceptive apparatus with a rise in the energy level of the gamma-system, and lead to the development of long-term post-activation alterations in the muscular fibers. These observations gi

Myelopathy caused by a histiocytic sarcoma in a cat.

An eight-year-old, female spayed, domestic shorthair cat presented with a three-week history of progressive general proprioceptive ataxia and upper motor neuron paresis of the hindlimbs. Computed tomography revealed a mediastinal mass invading the vertebral canal with the T1 spinal nerve and roots, causing extramedullary compression of the cranial thoracic spinal cord. Histopathological and immunohistochemical studies of the mass during postmortem examination disclosed a neoplasm, later determined to be a poorly differentiated histiocytic sarcoma. Feline histiocytic tumours are rare, with only

Dynamic and static subjective visual vertical with aging.

OBJECTIVE: Our vestibular function is gradually deteriorating during aging, although, its behavioral consequences are not easily recognized due to a substitution process by other sensory modalities as visual or proprioceptive inputs. METHODS: To reveal such a hidden substitution process by visual signals, the measurement of the static as well as the dynamic subjective visual vertical (SVV) was performed among 63 healthy subjects of different age. RESULTS: The static SVV was found to be stable among all subjects, whereas the shift of the dynamic SVV during rotation of a background scene gradu

[Situational anxiety in myasthenia gravis].

Neuromuscular block can cause anxiety. These known experimental results lead to the expectation of conditioned phobic reactions in myasthenia gravis. A sample of 240 patients with the disease do not show the theoretically expected results in the Fear-Survey-Schedule. But interindividual variation of anxiety corresponds to some clinical parameters, relevant for the disease. Patients with facial muscular symptoms have higher values on social phobia but no higher scores on a depression-scale. Opposite to the facial-feedback theory, this result supports the hypothesis, that intersubjective feedbac

Muscle spindle distribution in the levator veli palatini muscle in the rat.

We previously reported that the levator veli palatini muscle (LVP) in the rat is innervated by the glossopharyngeal nerve. The LVP positioned between the mouth and nasopharynx, has important roles in respiration, swallowing, and speech. Muscle spindles, structures scattered through skeletal muscles, appear to function like miniature strain gauges, sensing the degree of tension in the muscle. Muscle spindles were demonstrated in the rat's LVP in our neurophysiologic and histologic studies. We think the stretch of LVP modulates the rapid movements of the LVP by the proprioceptive component of th

[Homologous replacement of the cruciate ligament in the animal experiment].

A homologous cruciate ligament transplantation was effected in 20 Alsation dogs. Clinical, pathologico-anatomical and histological results were obtained from 16 animals after 3, 6 and 9 months, respectively, proving metaplasia of the transplant to endogenous body tissue. The clinical conclusion of this finding is that an anatomically optimally-structured ligament replacement can be inserted by means of a relatively uncomplicated operation--possibly even by using arthroscopy. The low amount of traumatization due to this type of surgery will be of advantage especially to sportsmen, who, as is we

Multisensory dysfunction across sleep disorders: A systematic review of 31 human modalities.

Sleep disorders are increasingly understood as systems-level conditions in which the brain and body reweight sensory evidence from the external world and internal milieu. We systematically reviewed human evidence for sensory and multisensory dysfunction across sleep disorders and experimental sleep loss. Searches identified 25,777 records; after removal of 7235 duplicates, 18,542 records were screened, 4452 full records were assessed for eligibility, and 377 studies met inclusion criteria. Evidence was organised across 31 sensory modalities in seven domains: olfaction, gustation, vision, audit

A single exposure to prolonged flexor carpi radialis muscle vibration increases sensorimotor cortical areas activity.

Prolonged local vibration (LV) is thought to promote brain plasticity through repeated Ia afferents discharge. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study therefore aimed at determining the acute after-effects of 30-min LV of the flexor carpi radialis muscle (FCR) on sensorimotor (S1, M1) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC) areas activity. Sixteen healthy participants were tested before and immediately after 30 min of FCR LV. Electroencephalographic signals were recorded during isometric submaximal wrist flexions. Time-frequency analyses were performed at source levels during

Unraveling the Twist: Spatial Navigational Challenges in Cervical Dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Cervical dystonia (CD) is an intricate neurological condition with motor and nonmotor symptoms. These include disruptions in visual perception, self-orientation, visual working memory, and vestibular functions. However, the specific impact of CD on perceiving self-motion direction, especially with isolated visual or vestibular stimuli, remains largely unexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the effects of CD on linear motion perception, hypothesizing impaired heading discrimination in both vestibular and visual tasks, and that such deficits correlate with the disease se

Functional characterization of the fronto-parietal reaching and grasping network: reversible deactivation of M1 and areas 2, 5, and 7b in awake behaving monkeys.

In the present investigation, we examined the role of different cortical fields in the fronto-parietal reaching and grasping network in awake, behaving macaque monkeys. This network is greatly expanded in primates compared to other mammals and coevolved with glabrous hands with opposable thumbs and the extraordinary dexterous behaviors employed by a number of primates, including humans. To examine this, we reversibly deactivated the primary motor area (M1), anterior parietal area 2, and posterior parietal areas 5L and 7b individually while monkeys were performing two types of reaching and gras

Sensorimotor integration in movement disorders.

Although current knowledge attributes movement disorders to a dysfunction of the basal ganglia-motor cortex circuits, abnormalities in the peripheral afferent inputs or in their central processing may interfere with motor program execution. We review the abnormalities of sensorimotor integration described in the various types of movement disorders. Several observations, including those of parkinsonian patients' excessive reliance on ongoing visual information during movement tasks, suggest that proprioception is defective in Parkinson's disease (PD). The disturbance of proprioceptive regulatio…
