Sex and gender differences in migraines: a narrative review.

INTRODUCTION: Gender medicine is a new medical approach aimed at the study of the differences between women and men in terms of prevention, diagnosis, and the outcome of all diseases. Migraines are among these. They represent the most common neurological illness; they are most prevalent in adults between 20 and 50 years of age and are three to four times more frequent in woman than in men. Affecting people in working age, migraines are a problem that strongly impacts the psychophysical health and productivity of workers, regardless of the specific job task they have. METHODS: A narrative revi

Olfactory identification disorders due to Alzheimer's disease: A new test from France to Quebec.

Olfactory identification disorder is regarded as an early marker of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and of similar diagnostic significance of biological or cognitive markers. Premature damage of the entorhinal olfactory cortex, the hippocampus and the orbitofrontal cortex characterize AD and suggest a specific impairment of olfactory identification. The use of psychophysical olfactory identification tests in clinical diagnostic practice is therefore strongly recommended, but not required. As these widespread tests are rarely used, an innovative test, adapted to this target group has been developed. I

Suprathreshold Contrast Perception Is Altered by Long-term Adaptation to Habitual Optical Blur.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether visual experience with habitual blur alters the neural processing of suprathreshold contrast in emmetropic and highly aberrated eyes. METHODS: A large stroke adaptive optics system was used to correct ocular aberrations. Contrast constancy was assessed psychophysically in emmetropic and keratoconic eyes using a contrast matching paradigm. Participants adjusted the contrasts of gratings at various spatial frequencies to match the contrast perception of a reference grating at 4 c/deg. Matching was done both with fully corrected and uncorrected ocular aberrations.

Fixational eye movements enable robust edge detection.

Human vision relies on mechanisms that respond to luminance edges in space and time. Most edge models use orientation-selective mechanisms on multiple spatial scales and operate on static inputs assuming that edge processing occurs within a single fixational instance. Recent studies, however, demonstrate functionally relevant temporal modulations of the sensory input due to fixational eye movements. Here we propose a spatiotemporal model of human edge detection that combines elements of spatial and active vision. The model augments a spatial vision model by temporal filtering and shifts the in

Short-Term Effects of COVID-19 Lockdown in Italian Children and Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: The Role of Separation Anxiety.

In March 2020, the Italian Government imposed mandatory home confinement to limit the spread of COVID-19. Few studies assessed the psychophysical impact of COVID-19 on chronically ill children. This study examined these effects on children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1D) and their caregivers. Seventy-one patients (7-13 years) with T1D and their caregivers were administered a survey created ad hoc and some standardized questionnaires, assessing psychological well-being and anxiety. Medical data (physical and biochemical characteristics) were recorded before (T0, January-February) and after

Contrast sensitivity and higher-order aberrations in Keratoconus subjects.

This study analyzes the relationship between contrast-sensitivity and higher-order aberrations (HOA) in mild and subclinical-keratoconus in subjects with good visual-acuity (VA). Keratoconus group (including subclinical-keratoconus) and controls underwent autokeratometry, corneal-tomography, autorefraction and HOA measurement. Contrast-sensitivity was tested using a psychophysical two-alternative forced-choice Gabor patches in three blocks (6, 9, 12 cycles/deg). Controls were compared to the keratoconus group and to a keratoconus subgroup with VA of 0.00 LogMar group ("keratoconus-0.00VA"). Sp

Measuring the sensitivity of tactile temporal order judgments in sighted and blind participants using the adaptive psi method.

Spatial locations of somatosensory stimuli are coded according to somatotopic (anatomical distribution of the sensory receptors on the skin surface) and spatiotopic (position of the body parts in external space) reference frames. This was mostly evidenced by means of temporal order judgment (TOJ) tasks in which participants discriminate the temporal order of two tactile stimuli, one applied on each hand. Because crossing the hands generates a conflict between anatomical and spatial responses, TOJ performance is decreased in such posture, except for congenitally blind people, suggesting a role

A systematic review of olfactory-related brain structural changes in patients with congenital or acquired anosmia.

Brain structural features of healthy individuals are associated with olfactory functions. However, due to the pathophysiological differences, congenital and acquired anosmia may exhibit different structural characteristics. A systematic review was undertaken to compare brain structural features between patients with congenital and acquired anosmia. A systematic search was conducted using PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus electronic databases to identify eligible reports on anosmia and structural changes and reported according to PRISMA guidelines. Reports were extracted for information on demographics

Calculation of left ventricular volumes and systolic indices in monitoring the therapeutic effect of levothyroxine replacement therapy in subclinical hypothyroidism.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is defined as high thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and normal thyroxine (T4) levels. Data on the effects of early substitution with levothyroxine on psychophysical health in SCH are not consistent enough to support its general administration. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of 3-months levothyroxine (LT4) treatment on cardiovascular function in symptomatic SCH with TSH <10 mIU/L. METHODS: Anthropometric, biochemical, electro- and echocardiographic indices were measured in 35 patients with persistent symptomatic SCH (4 mIU/L <

Synergistic but separable sensory changes in postural tachycardia syndrome and chronic migraine.

PURPOSE: Up to 90% of patients with postural tachycardia syndrome (PoTS) report headaches, and comorbid migraine headaches are common. Given this, pathophysiological interaction is possible, which may reveal key aspects of disease expression and treatment opportunities. We hypothesized that PoTS subjects-both with and without migraine-would show features of central sensitization, including allodynia and photophobia. METHODS: Eighty participants were evaluated, including 30 PoTS, 30 chronic migraine (CM), and 20 non-headache healthy controls (NH), using tilt table testing, psychophysical asses

Retinotopic adaptation reveals distinct categories of causal perception.

We can perceive not only low-level features of events such as color and motion, but also seemingly higher-level properties such as causality. A prototypical example of causal perception is the 'launching effect': one object (A) moves toward a stationary second object (B) until they are adjacent, at which point A stops and B starts moving in the same direction. Beyond these motions themselves - and regardless of any higher-level beliefs - this display induces a vivid visual impression of causality, wherein A is seen to cause B's motion. Do such percepts reflect a unitary category of visual proc

Retrospective analysis of new psychoactive substances in blood samples of German drivers suspected of driving under the influence of drugs.

Driving under the influence of drugs (DUID) is a serious global problem and poses a public health risk. With new psychoactive substances (NPS) entering the illicit drug market several years ago, a significant number of highly potent and harmful drugs have become easily available and the use of these substances may impair a person's ability to drive a vehicle safely. Since NPS are not usually covered in routine toxicological analyses used in DUID investigations, only little is known about their prevalence. To gather more information on the prevalence of NPS in cases of impaired driving, a retro

Neural Correlates of Enhanced Audiovisual Processing in the Bilingual Brain.

Bilingualism is associated with enhancements in perceptual and cognitive processing necessary for juggling multiple languages. Recent psychophysical studies demonstrate bilinguals also show enhanced multisensory processing and more restricted temporal binding windows for integrating audiovisual information. Here, we probed the neural mechanisms of bilinguals' audiovisual benefits. We recorded neuroelectric responses in mono- and bi-lingual listeners to the double-flash paradigm in which auditory beeps concurrent with a single visual flash induces the perceptual illusion of multiple flashes. Towards a Mechanistic-Driven Precision Medicine Approach for Tinnitus.

In this position review, we propose to establish a path for replacing the empirical classification of tinnitus with a taxonomy from precision medicine. The goal of a classification system is to understand the inherent heterogeneity of individuals experiencing and suffering from tinnitus and to identify what differentiates potential subgroups. Identification of different patient subgroups with distinct audiological, psychophysical, and neurophysiological characteristics will facilitate the management of patients with tinnitus as well as the design and execution of drug development and clinical

Chemosensory Changes from Cancer Treatment and Their Effects on Patients' Food Behavior: A Scoping Review.

Individuals undergoing treatment for cancer can experience changes in taste or smell that are often assumed to affect constructs related to food behavior, although this relationship is rarely measured directly. To ascertain the extent to which measured changes in taste and smell during and after cancer treatment affect food behavior, we conducted a scoping review and completed a comparative analysis for studies that met our criteria, which were: they directly measured cancer patients' (a) psychophysical response to taste and/or olfactory stimuli, and (b) food behavior (including food enjoyment

Evidence Integration in Natural Acoustic Textures during Active and Passive Listening.

Many natural sounds can be well described on a statistical level, for example, wind, rain, or applause. Even though the spectro-temporal profile of these acoustic textures is highly dynamic, changes in their statistics are indicative of relevant changes in the environment. Here, we investigated the neural representation of change detection in natural textures in humans, and specifically addressed whether active task engagement is required for the neural representation of this change in statistics. Subjects listened to natural textures whose spectro-temporal statistics were modified at variable

Multi-line Adaptive Perimetry (MAP): A New Procedure for Quantifying Visual Field Integrity for Rapid Assessment of Macular Diseases.

PURPOSE: In order to monitor visual defects associated with macular degeneration (MD), we present a new psychophysical assessment called multiline adaptive perimetry (MAP) that measures visual field integrity by simultaneously estimating regions associated with perceptual distortions (metamorphopsia) and visual sensitivity loss (scotoma). METHODS: We first ran simulations of MAP with a computerized model of a human observer to determine optimal test design characteristics. In experiment 1, predictions of the model were assessed by simulating metamorphopsia with an eye-tracking device with 20
