Novel application of human morphomics to quantify temporal soft tissues in Pierre Robin and Treacher Collins.

INTRODUCTION: Pierre Robin sequence (PR) and Treacher Collins syndrome (TC) are congenital disorders associated with multiple craniofacial abnormalities. The mandibular malformations linked with these maladies are closely associated with the form and function of the temporalis muscle. Despite these associations, a paucity of research has been directed at quantifying how these malformations affect the tissues of the temporal region. In this paper, we seek to quantify differences in the temporalis muscle and the temporal fat pad using a novel CT-derived analytic program to examine craniofacial m

Three-dimensional computed tomography for lung cancer in a patient with three right vein ostia.

Some variations in pulmonary vein anatomy can have serious consequences in patients undergoing lung surgery, but clinicians rarely encounter patients with these variations. We report here a thoracoscopic lobectomy for right lung cancer in a patient with three right vein ostia. Preoperative review of three-dimensional 64-row multidetector computed tomography (3D-MDCT) of the patient showed a variation that was not confirmed in transverse plane computed tomography films. However, the variant anomaly was confirmed during thoracoscopic right lower lobectomy. The postoperative course was uneventful

An exceptional combination of congenital coronary anomalies.

We present a case of congenital coronary artery anomalies combining the absence of the circumflex artery, ectopic origins of left anterior descending and diagonal arteries and abnormal courses of these vessels. These rare anomalies were detected during an elective coronary angiography in a patient with stable angina that was related to significant stenosis of the posterolateral and middle right coronary artery. A computed tomography scanner with three-dimensional reconstructions confirmed the anatomy.

C-arm cone-beam CT: applications for spinal cement augmentation demonstrated by three cases.

Spinal canal narrowing as a result of retropulsion of spinal structures before or during cement augmentation has been considered a contraindication to therapy. The authors describe three cases of compression fractures safely treated with cement augmentation with the novel application of C-arm cone-beam computed tomography (CT). All cases involved small amounts of posterior cement extrusion, after which osteotomy needles were left in place during C-arm cone-beam CT. Rapidly reformatted images were viewed with the use of bone windows, yielding three-dimensional visualization of pertinent anatomy

Benefits of routine use of coronal and sagittal reformations in multi-slice CT examination of the abdomen and pelvis.

AIM: To evaluate the usefulness of coronal and sagittal reformations from isotropic abdomino-pelvic computed tomography (CT) examinations. METHODS: Fifty consecutive abdomino-pelvic CT examinations were reconstructed into two sets of axial source images: 0.9 mm section width with 0.45 mm reconstruction interval (isotropic) and 4 mm section width with 3 mm reconstruction interval. The isotropic dataset was reformatted into coronal and sagittal stacks with 4 mm section widths. Three readers independently reviewed the three image sets with 4 mm section widths. The coronal and sagittal reformatio

Coronary artery fistula in a patient with coronary artery disease: evaluation by coronary angiography and multidetector computed tomography.

A 54-year-old man with acute myocardial infarction was successfully treated with coronary artery stenting. Coronary angiography is the preferred diagnostic method for imaging the coronary arteries, but coronary artery fistulas origin and course may not be apparent. New tomographic cardiovascular imaging tests such as, multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) can be used to precise delineation of coronary fistulas.

Computer-aided diagnosis scheme using a filter bank for detection of microcalcification clusters in mammograms.

Mammography is considered the most effective method for early detection of breast cancers. However, it is difficult for radiologists to detect microcalcification clusters. Therefore, we have developed a computerized scheme for detecting early-stage microcalcification clusters in mammograms. We first developed a novel filter bank based on the concept of the Hessian matrix for classifying nodular structures and linear structures. The mammogram images were decomposed into several subimages for second difference at scales from 1 to 4 by this filter bank. The subimages for the nodular component (NC

Diagnostic imaging and differential diagnosis in 2 case reports.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective resident's case reports. BACKGROUND: In today's healthcare setting, it is important for physical therapists to recognize when diagnostic imaging is necessary--as well as know how to interpret the results of these tests--to assist in the clinical decision-making process. Two cases are presented that illustrate how a physical therapist, credentialed to request and review diagnostic imaging, effectively and efficiently utilized multiple forms of diagnostic imaging to assist in his differential diagnosis and clinical decision making. DIAGNOSIS: The first case report d

Impact of adaptive iterative dose reduction (AIDR) 3D on low-dose abdominal CT: comparison with routine-dose CT using filtered back projection.

BACKGROUND: While CT is widely used in medical practice, a substantial source of radiation exposure is associated with an increased lifetime risk of cancer. Therefore, concerns to dose reduction in CT examinations are increasing and an iterative reconstruction algorithm, which allow for dose reduction by compensating image noise in the image reconstruction, has been developed. PURPOSE: To investigate the performance of low-dose abdominal CT using adaptive iterative dose reduction 3D (AIDR 3D) compared to routine-dose CT using filtered back projection (FBP). Cervical lesion assessment using real-time microendoscopy image analysis in Brazil: The CLARA study.

We conducted a prospective evaluation of the diagnostic performance of high-resolution microendoscopy (HRME) to detect cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) in women with abnormal screening tests. Study participants underwent colposcopy, HRME and cervical biopsy. The prospective diagnostic performance of HRME using an automated morphologic image analysis algorithm was compared to that of colposcopy using histopathologic detection of CIN as the gold standard. To assess the potential to further improve performance of HRME image analysis, we also conducted a retrospective analysis assessing pe

Femoral morphology due to impingement influences the range of motion in slipped capital femoral epiphysis.

Femoroacetabular impingement due to metaphyseal prominence is associated with the slippage in patients with slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), but it is unclear whether the changes in femoral metaphysis morphology are associated with range of motion (ROM) changes or type of impingement. We asked whether the femoral head-neck junction morphology influences ROM analysis and type of impingement in addition to the slip angle and the acetabular version. We analyzed in 31 patients with SCFE the relationship between the proximal femoral morphology and limitation in ROM due to impingement based
