We report a 73-year-old right-handed female who presented with an acute amnesic syndrome. On November 18, 1991, she was admitted to a local hospital complaining of sudden-onset vertigo and nausea, but immediately after the admission she developed an amnesic syndrome. On November 27, she was transferred to our hospital for further assessment of her memory disturbance. Neurologically she was normal except for mild right hemianopsia and increased deep tendon reflexes in the extremities. Neuropsychological assessments were performed over 3 weeks. She was always alert, attentive, and cooperative. S

We report clinical and pathological features of a case of dementia syndrome due to dural sinus thrombosis. In three years before admission, the patient, a 64-year old man, had had four convulsive attacks; scattered calcification shadows were disclosed by plain CT. Ten months before the admission, he complained of progressive memory disturbance and dyscalculia. General physical examination showed no remarkable abnormalities except for bruit at the left mastoid process. Although his time orientation was poor, he was otherwise fully awake. Neurologically, memory disturbance, finger agnosia, and d

In addition to projections through the vagus, cervical sympathetic, and aortic depressor nerves, baroreceptor afferents from the arch of the aorta are thought to rise through a superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) pathway in the rat. We evaluated this possibility, first, by determining the hemodynamic response to electrical stimulation of the SLN in anesthetized rats. Miniaturized pulsed-Doppler flow probes were placed on the right common iliac, superior mesenteric and left renal arteries. Stimulation of the SLN produced frequency-dependent (1-12 Hz) reductions in arterial pressure, heart rate and r

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is highly prevalent in adolescence. Up to 30% of patients insufficiently benefit from first-line treatments, underscoring the need for improved treatment strategies and better understanding of pathophysiology. In depression, an imbalance between cortical excitation and inhibition in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), assessed by the TMS-evoked N100 potential, is suggested as one of several contributing neurobiological mechanisms. While elevated N100 amplitudes have been observed in depressed adults and adolescents, its association with sympt

PURPOSE: To determine whether moderate cognitive load alters horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain during the video head impulse test (vHIT) and to evaluate the reliability of vHIT under dual-task conditions.
METHODS: Thirty-three healthy young adults (mean age 21.3 ± 2.1 years) completed two vHIT conditions: (1) a baseline single-task condition and (2) a dual-task cognitive load condition involving serial subtraction aloud while fixating a constant target at a single distance. Horizontal VOR gains were measured bilaterally. Mental effort and dizziness were rated on 0 to 10 numerical

BACKGROUND: Asymmetric mydriasis, or unequal pupil size, requires careful evaluation to exclude serious neurological conditions. Pharmacologic causes are well-known, but reports have mainly involved prescription antiperspirants for underarm use. This case is novel because it describes, to our knowledge, the first instance of bilateral mydriasis and anisocoria caused by a non-prescription facial antiperspirant. This highlights a new public health concern related to easily accessible consumer products. CASE PRESENTATION: A young female presented with acute, unequally enlarged pupils (right pupil

Intra-arterial chemotherapy (IAC) has become an increasingly popular approach for treating advanced retinoblastoma. It offers targeted drug delivery and reduced systemic toxicity when compared to systemic chemotherapy. Respiratory complications are rare, but this case presents a patient who experienced recurrent episodes of intraoperative bronchospasm possibly linked to an anatomical variation. A six-month-old female with Group D retinoblastoma in her right eye underwent five cycles of IAC within six months of diagnosis. Due to failed visualization of the right ophthalmic artery during angiogr

PURPOSE: To explore parents' expectations regarding the disclosure of an oligodontia diagnosis in dental practice and analysing them through the lens of core bioethical principles (principlism).
METHODS: A qualitative interview study was conducted with parents of children diagnosed with oligodontia, all of whom had attended at least one consultation at a French specialist centre. Interviews were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis.
RESULTS: The study sample consisted of 18 parents who reported frequent dissatisfaction with the way the diagnosis was disclosed. The findings suggest that

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a long-term neurological condition that impacts the brain and spinal cord. The infratentorial area houses the cerebellum and brainstem. Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) are myogenic responses with short latency. Cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) represents a reflection of the vestibulocolic reflex.
METHODS: A total of 32 consecutive patients participated in the study (males, n = 12; females, n = 20). Cervical VEMP (cVEMP) were examined for latencies, conduction block, and amplitude asymmetry ratio, and the VEMP score was

A 50-year-old Saudi woman, with a history of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), presented to the emergency room with a three-week history of progressive weakness. Her symptoms began with difficulty elevating her arms and standing up from a chair. Over the next two days, her weakness progressed, leading to bilateral wrist drop and foot drop, along with an inability to raise her hands or stand. She also reported sensory changes, including decreased sensation to touch and heat, most prominent in the lower limbs, and complaints of dry eyes and mouth. Additionally, the patient noted bluish discoloration of

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system characterized by the dissemination of lesions in time and space. Although tremors are the most commonly reported movement disorder in MS, less frequent manifestations such as paroxysmal tonic spasms, dystonia, chorea, ballism, myoclonus, myokymia, restless leg syndrome, and hemifacial spasms can also occur. Chorea and ballism are particularly rare in MS.

Differentiating between stroke and stroke mimics (i.e., non-vascular conditions) is a major challenge, as they often involve similar presenting symptoms. A common type of stroke mimic is functional neurological disorder (FND), a somatic disorder caused by severe stress, emotional conflict, or a psychiatric disorder usually presenting with one or more neurologic symptoms. This condition is associated with voluntary motor and sensory symptoms that are internally inconsistent with identifiable neurological diseases and lack structural lesions. We describe a 54-year-old female with a history of tr

Gravity provides an absolute verticality reference for all spatial perception, allowing us to move within and interact effectively with our world. Bayesian inference models explain verticality perception as a combination of online sensory cues with a prior prediction that the head is usually upright. Until now, these Bayesian models have been formulated for judgements of the perceived orientation of visual stimuli. Here, we investigated whether judgements of the verticality of tactile stimuli follow a similar pattern of Bayesian perceptual inference. We also explored whether verticality percep

BACKGROUND: Approximately half of the patients presenting with new-onset heart failure (HF) have HF with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (HFpEF) and HF with mid-range left ventricular ejection fraction (HFmrEF). These patients have neurohormonal activation like that of HF with reduced ejection fraction; however, beta-blockers and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors have not been shown to improve their outcomes, and current treatment for these patients is symptom based and empiric. Sympathoinhibition using parasympathetic stimulation has been shown to improve central and perip

To understand the role of the ipsilateral motor cortex in the control of unimanual movements, we evaluated changes in cortical motor evoked potentials (MEP) from the left abductor pollici brevis (APB) to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the right hemisphere in nine normal subjects during execution of right finger movements of different complexities. The motor tasks were (a) repetitive opposition movement (thumb tapping the 3rd finger); (b) isolated finger movements in a 'usual' sequence (thumb tapping fingers 2, 3, 4 and 5) and (c) in an 'unusual' sequence (thumb tapping fingers 3, 5
