Iron deficiency (ID), with or without anemia, is commonly found worldwide and affects the health and wellbeing of pregnant and nonpregnant women. Symptoms of ID- which include fatigue, pica (ice craving), restless legs syndrome, poor concentration and work function, increased susceptibility to infection, and cardiovascular stress- can cause significant morbidity and reduced quality of life. The etiologies of iron deficiency in women are usually specific to each community. In the developing world, iron deficiency is usually associated with poor iron intake and parasitic infections, whereas in h

Sleep disturbances such as excessive daytime sleepiness, central and obstructive sleep apneas, restless legs syndrome, and rapid eye movement sleep dysregulation are prominent in patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1). Mild intellectual deficits presented in many patients with DM1. In addition, psychosocial issues caused by neuropsychiatric symptoms are a clinical problem. We herein present the cases of four DM1 patients with sleep disturbances and neuropsychiatric symptoms in the preceding stage of clinically significant muscle symptoms. One of the cases exhibited a sleep disorder and

Apart from the typical motor symptoms, Parkinson's disease is characterized by a wide range of different non-motor symptoms, which are highly prevalent in all stages of the disease and have an incisive influence on quality of life. Moreover, their treatment continues to be challenging. In this review, we critically summarize the evidence for the impact of dopaminergic therapies on non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease. We performed a PubMed search to identify relevant clinical studies that investigated the response of non-motor symptoms to dopaminergic therapy. In the domain of neuropsychi

Most antidepressants change sleep; in particular, they alter the physiological patterns of sleep stages recorded overnight with EEG and other physiological measures. These effects are greatest and most consistent on rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and tend to be in the opposite direction to the sleep abnormalities found in major depression, but are usually of greater degree. Reductions in the amount of REM sleep and increases in REM sleep onset latency are seen after taking antidepressants, both in healthy volunteers and in depressed patients. Antidepressants that increase serotonin function b

BACKGROUND: Sleep is vital to physical, cognitive, and emotional development in children, yet sleep disturbances remain underrecognized, particularly in pediatric psychiatric populations. Prior studies suggest a bidirectional relationship between psychiatric disorders and sleep dysfunction. In Lebanon, the compounded effects of social unrest, economic instability, and widespread psychiatric morbidity have raised concern over pediatric sleep health. This study aims to compare the prevalence and characteristics of sleep disturbances among pediatric patients with and without psychiatric disorders

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Contradictory evidence on the impact of single sleep-wake-disturbances (SWD), such as sleep-disorderd breating (SDB) or insomnia, in patients with stroke, on the risk of subsequent cardio- and cerebrovascular events (CCE) and death, exists. Very recent studies in the general population suggest that the presence of multiple SWD increases cardio-cerebrovascular risk. Hence, the aim of this study was to asssess whether a novel score capturing the burden of multiple SWD, a so called "sleep burden index", is predictive for subsequent CCE including death in a prospectively fo

BACKGROUND: Unipolar depression is one of the most important mental disorders. Insomnia is a symptom of cardinal importance in depression. It increases the risk to develop depression, negatively affects disease trajectory, is the most common symptom after remission, increases the risk of relapse, and is associated with higher suicide rates. Existing therapies for insomnia in depression have limitations. Further adjuvant therapies are therefore needed. Acute aerobic exercise has been shown to have beneficial effects on sleep in healthy individuals and patients with insomnia. We therefore hypoth

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence provides a clear association between rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorders (RBD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), but the clinical features that determine the co-morbidity of RBD and PD are not yet fully understood.
METHODS: We evaluated the characteristics of nocturnal disturbances and other motor and non-motor features related to RBD in patients with PD and the impact of RBD on their quality of life. Probable RBD (pRBD) was evaluated using the Japanese version of the RBD screening questionnaire (RBDSQ-J).
RESULTS: A significantly higher frequency of pRBD

INTRODUCTION: Many antidepressants are associated with periodic limb movements (PLM) during sleep. Although some tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline, promote sleep and are thus often prescribed as a treatment for sleep disturbances that can accompany depression, it remains unclear whether amitriptyline is associated with PLM.
METHODS: 32 healthy males (18-39 years) spent 2 consecutive nights in the sleep lab for polysomnographic recording. During the second night, they received either 75 mg amitriptyline or placebo in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled manner.

Sleep disorders are highly prevalent during childhood and adolescence. It is known that if left untreated, these problems can have significant impact on daytime function, including learning, memory, attention, and behavior. The approach to the treatment of these disorders (whether with or without pharmacotherapy) is dependent on a thorough evaluation of the sleep complaint and determination of an accurate diagnosis. Many pediatric sleep problems are due to insomnia. There is good evidence that young children with behaviorally based insomnia respond to appropriate behavioral interventions. Ther

Dexmedetomidine sedation in elderly patients is associated with cognitive benefits due to its biomimetic non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep–like state. However, this state may predispose patients to periodic limb movements (PLMs), which can cause unintended procedural risk during sedation. We aimed to determine the incidence of PLMs during dexmedetomidine-based multimodal sedation for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and explore associations with the need for conversion to general anesthesia. In this prospective observational study, 35 consecutive patients (mean age 81 ± 6 years

Insufficient sleep is common in the general population, and can result from environmental and psychosocial factors, medical and psychiatric disorders, and sleep disorders, such as insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, sleep apnoea and restless legs. Women are particularly at risk for sleep disorders, and complaints of sleep disturbance are more prevalent among women than men across the life span. During the perinatal period, many common sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnoea or restless legs may be exacerbated, or in the case of insomnia or narcolepsy, treatment options may change.

We report the first published case study of a suddenly occurring panic attack in a patient with no prior history of panic disorder during combined functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI, 1.5 Tesla) and electrocardiogram (ECG) recording. The single case was a 46-year-old woman who developed a panic attack near the planned end of the fMRI acquisition session, which therefore had to be aborted. Correlational analysis of heart rate fluctuations and fMRI data revealed a significant negative association in the left middle temporal gyrus. Additionally, regions-of-interest (ROI) analyses indicate

In a double-blind, parallel-group study of 135 patients with a mean age of 60 years, zopiclone 5 mg was compared with propiomazine 25 mg. The patients rated their sleep in a diary. There were statistically significant differences in favour of zopiclone for nine out of 13 variables measuring subjective sleep quality and quantity. Concerning side-effects, bad taste was reported more frequently in the zopiclone group and restless legs in the propiomazine group.

Childhood parasomnias and movement disorders arise from a variety of etiologic factors. For some children, psychopathology plays a causal role in sleep disorders; in other cases, recurrent parasomnia episodes induce psychopathology. Current research reveals complex interconnections between sleep and mental health. As such, it is important that clinicians consider the impact psychiatric disorders have on childhood parasomnias. This article describes common parasomnias and movement disorders in children and adolescents, with emphasis on psychologic and behavioral comorbidities.

The American College of Rheumatology (ACR) 2016 criteria for fibromyalgia (FM) is recommended for use in primary and referral setting. However, neither the ACR 2016 nor its predecessor ACR 2010 criteria have been validated in a referral setting. We hypothesized that the presence of higher comorbidities in the referral care setting may affect the performance of the ACR 2016. All patients referred to a tertiary care hospital with widespread pain for more than 3 months were screened using (1) the ACR 2016 criteria and (2) by a blinded expert physician (using ACR 1990 criteria). Using the ACR 1990

Erythropoiesis and iron metabolism are closely interconnected, under both physiological and pathological conditions. Polycythemia vera (PV) is a myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) caused by a Janus kinase-2 (JAK2) mutation, resulting in uncontrolled red blood cell production and elevated hemoglobin and hematocrit levels. In PV, iron deficiency is common and may be due to several factors, including chronic gastrointestinal bleeding, chronic inflammation, dysregulated hepcidin signaling, and therapeutic phlebotomy. Many patients exhibit low serum ferritin and low to normal hepcidin levels despite

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system characterized by the dissemination of lesions in time and space. Although tremors are the most commonly reported movement disorder in MS, less frequent manifestations such as paroxysmal tonic spasms, dystonia, chorea, ballism, myoclonus, myokymia, restless leg syndrome, and hemifacial spasms can also occur. Chorea and ballism are particularly rare in MS.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 20-year-old female who presented with a 1-month history of unsteady gait and involuntary movements of the
