Perceived responsibility for change as an outcome predictor in cognitive-behavioural group therapy.

PURPOSE: The study of control beliefs in psychotherapy research has been neglected in the past years. Based on the evidence that some patients do not benefit enough from therapy because of inadequate expectancies regarding the responsibility and the mechanisms of therapeutic change, assessing control beliefs specific to the psychotherapy context and linking them to therapy outcome can help highlighting this specific aspect and reactivating a neglected field of clinical research. METHOD: Using a new validated instrument (Questionnaire on Control Expectancies in Psychotherapy, TBK), this study

Hydroxyacyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase: A biomarker for authentication of death from mechanical asphyxia.

Death from mechanical asphyxia (DMA) refers to death from acute respiratory disorder caused by mechanical violence. Due to the absence of characteristic signs in corpses, it has been rather challenging to achieve the precise authentication of DMA. In this research, human pulmonary samples were collected and grouped according to different causes of death in search of potential biomarkers of DMA. Hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (HADH) was identified significantly up-regulated in DMA group. Cell experiments were conducted to figure out the mechanism of the up-regulation of HADH. According to the re

Mindfulness-based pain management for patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain: a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain is a significant global public health challenge. There is substantial evidence supporting the benefits of mindfulness-based interventions for chronic pain. Mindfulness-Based Pain Management (MBPM) is an 8-week mindfulness-based behavioral intervention program designed to help individuals manage chronic pain. However, the available evidence regarding the effects of the MBPM program in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain is limited. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain were randomly assigned to either the MBPM program group or the wai

Relationship of sexual abuse to motivation for strenuous exercise.

AIM: Sources of motivation for intense physical exercise are poorly understood. Based on views that link such behaviour to preexisting psychopathology, we tested the hypotheses that history of childhood sexual abuse would be greater in intense exercisers than in non-exercisers, and that effects of abuse on self-esteem, perfectionism and body dissatisfaction would help to explain any link between abuse and exercise. METHODS: Consecutive attenders at two types of exercise were recruited: weight training and running. Sedentary attenders at a further education college provided a third, comparison

Relationships among sleep quality, anxiety, and depression among Chinese nurses: A network analysis.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to elucidate the symptom-symptom interactions of sleep quality, depression, and anxiety in Chinese nurses and to compare a multimorbidity group, a comorbidity group, and a healthy group via a network model. METHOD: A total of 7113 Chinese nurses were recruited from sixty hospitals in January 2024, and their sleep quality, anxiety symptoms and depressive symptoms were measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), respectively. Central symptoms and bridge symptoms were ident

Validity and responsiveness of the Core Outcome Measures Index (COMI) for the neck.

PURPOSE: Patient-orientated outcome questionnaires are essential to evaluate treatment success. To compare different treatments, hospitals, and surgeons, standardised questionnaires are required. The present study examined the validity and responsiveness of the Core Outcome Measurement Index for neck pain (COMI-neck), a short, multidimensional outcome instrument. METHODS: Questionnaires were completed by patients with degenerative problems of the cervical spine undergoing cervical disc arthroplasty before (N = 89) and 3 months after (N = 75) surgery. The questionnaires comprised the EuroQol-F

Gait kinematic analysis in patients with a mild form of central cord syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Central cord syndrome (CCS) is considered the most common incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI). Independent ambulation was achieved in 87-97% in young patients with CCS but no gait analysis studies have been reported before in such pathology. The aim of this study was to analyze the gait characteristics of subjects with CCS and to compare the findings with a healthy age, sex and anthropomorphically matched control group (CG), walking both at a self-selected speed and at the same speed. METHODS: Twelve CCS patients and a CG of twenty subjects were analyzed. Kinematic data were obtai

Disproportionate Vitamin A Deficiency in Women of Specific Ethnicities Linked to Differences in Allele Frequencies of Vitamin A-Related Polymorphisms.

Background: While the current national prevalence rate of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is estimated to be less than 1%, it is suggested that it varies between different ethnic groups and races within the U.S. We assessed the prevalence of VAD in pregnant women of different ethnic groups and tested these prevalence rates for associations with the vitamin A-related single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) allele frequencies in each ethnic group. Methods: We analyzed two independent datasets of serum retinol levels with self-reported ethnicities and the differences of allele frequencies of the SNPs ass

A Preliminary Investigation of Going Online for Suicide-Related Reasons: The Impact on Suicide Risk and Prevention.

Online spaces can be a source of suicide safety as well as suicide risk. What potentially restricts their safety value is the limited contemporary evidence regarding who engages online for suicide-related reasons. This study explored characteristic differences between individuals using social media/internet for suicide-related reasons (users) and those who do not (non-users). It sought to identify whether users differ in relation to psychological, interpersonal, and social characteristics compared to non-users. These characteristics were suicide risk (SBQ-R), depression symptomology (PHQ-9), s

Adherence to LAMA/LABA therapies in middle-aged patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: A group-based trajectory analysis.

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal adherence patterns to LAMA/LABA therapy among middle-aged patients with COPD are not well understood. Because individuals aged 40-64 years typically self-manage medications with fewer age-related influences on adherence, this population allows clearer evaluation of temporal patterns. We therefore conducted a descriptive study among middle-aged patients to classify adherence trajectories and identify groups at risk of suboptimal adherence. METHODS: Using a Japanese claims database, we identified COPD patients aged 40-64 years who initiated glycopyrronium/indacaterol (G

Individual psychotherapy with victims of incest.

In treating victims of incest, therapists need to be aware of the gamut of symptoms, personality traits, interpersonal difficulties, and clinical syndromes that occur with special frequency in this population. A list of these features is provided. Vignettes with typical therapist-patient dialogue are offered, demonstrating techniques for handling the initial consultation and opening phase of treatment. During later phases of treatment the focus will usually shift to the discussion of the pertinent symptoms (such as suicidal feelings, substance abuse, dissociative phenomena, sexual disturbances

Lymphomatoid papulosis update. A historical perspective.

Soon after lymphomatoid papulosis was identified and named, it became apparent that a whole constellation of clinically benign, histologically malignant, continuing, self-healing eruptions existed. To this group of assumed entities without names, the inclusive term rhythmic paradoxical eruption spectrum was proposed. Some bands of this spectrum have since been delineated, and their surmised overt malignant potential realized. Recent immunologic studies have identified a number of shared immunologic markers among the various bands of this spectrum, which helps to explain the interrelationships
