Long-term effects of oral clefts on health care utilization: a sibling comparison.

Oral clefts are among the most common birth defects affecting thousands of newborns each year, but little is known about their potential long-term consequences. In this paper, we explore the impact of oral clefts on health care utilization over most of the lifespan. To account for time-invariant unobservable parental characteristics, we compare affected individuals with their own unaffected siblings. The analysis is based on unique data comprising the entire cohort of individuals born with oral clefts in Denmark tracked until adulthood in administrative register data. We find that children wit…

Using a sibling design to compare childhood adversities in female patients with BPD and their sisters.

Abuse and neglect are well-established risk correlates of borderline personality disorder (BPD). The goal of this study was to examine whether BPD probands can be differentiated from their sisters with respect to a range of developmental adversity and maltreatment indicators, including retrospective self-reports of past experiences of childhood abuse and neglect, dysfunctional parent-child relationships and peer victimization and dysfunctional peer relationships. A total of 53 patients with BPD were compared to 53 sisters who were currently free of psychopathology on measures assessing childho

Unusual presentation of Kallmannn syndrome with contiguous gene deletion in three siblings of a family.

We report the case of 3 brothers aged 34, 24, and 22 years, unmarried, who presented to our endocrinology clinic with absence of secondary sexual characters. There was no such history in other siblings, but their maternal uncle had similar complaints. On examination, all 3 had pre-pubertal appearance, voice, and genitalia along with anosmia and bimanual synkinesia. Cryptorchidism was noticed in 2 while third person had small hypoplastic testes. It was also noted that all 3 patients had icthyosis mainly involving trunk, back, and limbs. The hormonal assays were consistent with isolated hypogona…

Sibling sex ratio and birth order in early-onset gender dysphoric adolescents.

Several sibship-related variables have been studied extensively in sexual orientation research, especially in men. Sibling sex ratio refers to the ratio of brothers to sisters in the aggregate sibships of a group of probands. Birth order refers to the probands' position (e.g., first-born, middle-born, last-born) within their sibships. Fraternal birth order refers to their position among male siblings only. Such research was extended in this study to a large group of early-onset gender dysphoric adolescents. The probands comprised 94 male-to-female and 95 female-to-male gender dysphoric adolesc…

Home environment: association with hyperactivity/impulsivity in children with ADHD and their non-ADHD siblings.

OBJECTIVE: We wished to ascertain if there is an association between symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and home environment in children with ADHD and non-ADHD siblings, controlling for other environmental measures. METHODS: 96 children with ADHD combined type (ADHD-CT) and their siblings participated in the study. Parent and teacher Conners' rating scales were completed and home environment was assessed using the middle childhood and early adolescent Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment (HOME). ADHD symptoms were assessed for correlation with HOME in c…

The Richieri-Costa and Pereira syndrome: report of two Brazilian siblings and review of literature.

Richieri-Costa and Pereira syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized specially by Pierre Robin sequence with cleft mandible and limb anomalies. There are a typical laryngeal anomaly which encompass short and round larynx, absent or abnormal epiglottis, and abnormal aryepiglottic folds. Most patients reported were from Brazil. We describe a brother and sister with Richieri-Costa and Pereira syndrome on another Brazilian family documenting their physical findings and laryngeal defects. We also review the literature and discuss the main clinical characteristics and etiology.

Siblings of young people with Duchenne muscular dystrophy--a qualitative study of impact and coping.

BACKGROUND: Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a progressively debilitating neuromuscular disorder markedly affecting family life. AIMS OF THE STUDY: To obtain descriptive accounts from siblings about impact and coping with DMD and consider implications for psychological function. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of healthy siblings of young people with DMD attending a regional centre. Main carers were interviewed for corroborative evidence. Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim prior to a thematic analysis. RESULTS: 35 siblings (18 girls, 17 boys fr…

Impact of fathers on daughters' age at menarche: a genetically and environmentally controlled sibling study.

Girls growing up in homes without their biological fathers tend to go through puberty earlier than their peers. Whereas evolutionary theories of socialization propose that this relation is causal, it could arise from environmental or genetic confounds. To distinguish between these competing explanations, the authors used a genetically and environmentally controlled sibling comparison design to examine the effects of differential exposure to family disruption/father absence in a community sample of sister pairs. As specified by evolutionary causal theories, younger sisters had earlier menarche

Screening of parents and siblings of patients with thyroid dysgenesis by thyroid function tests and ultrasound.

AIMS: To investigate the frequency of thyroid dysgenesis (TD) in first-degree relatives of TD cases. METHODS: 244 first-degree relatives of 82 TD cases were screened by thyroid ultrasound (USG), T(4), fT(4) and TSH. USG was also performed in 220 unrelated, age- and sex-matched healthy controls to obtain normative data for thyroid volumes. RESULTS: Specific diagnoses of indexes were 35 ectopia, 22 athyreosis, 14 severe hypoplasia, 8 hypoplasia, and 3 hemiagenesis/asymmetric hypoplasia. In 5 of 77 families (6.5%), there were 2 cases with known symptomatic TD. A total of 10 cases made familial

The development of interpersonal aggression during adolescence: the importance of parents, siblings, and family economics.

Latent growth curve modeling employed data from a longitudinal study of 451 sibling families to examine parents, siblings, and family economics as factors in individual differences in the developmental course of interpersonal aggression during adolescence. Findings suggest that individual change in interpersonal aggression during adolescence can be predicted by the gender and aggression of one's sibling; predictions varied by the gender composition of the sibling dyad. Rates of parental hostility predicted levels of interpersonal aggression for both older (mean age = 12 years) and younger sibl…

Sibling cases of Vici syndrome: sleep abnormalities and complications of renal tubular acidosis.

Vici syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by albinism, agenesis of the corpus callosum, and developmental delays. Cardiac complications usually cause poor prognosis. We report sibling cases of Vici syndrome, and address complications of renal tubular acidosis. We also demonstrate the significance of serial examinations of brain natriuretic peptides, and discuss the possible early use of a beta-blocker to control cardiomyopathy. A sleep study including polysomnography indicated functional brainstem involvement, in which muscle atonia during non-rapid sleeping eye movements, and

Fine-Lubinsky syndrome: sibling pair suggests possible autosomal recessive inheritance.

In 1983, Fine and Lubinsky reported a single patient with craniofacial anomalies, hearing loss, cataracts, microstomia, CNS anomalies, and developmental delay. Since that time, three additional patients with similar findings have been described. In each case the patients was the only affected child in his or her family. Here we describe the first brother and sister sibling pair with features suggestive of Fine-Lubinsky syndrome. Features present in one or both of our patients, and the majority of previously described individuals with Fine-Lubinsky syndrome, include: craniosynostosis/abnormal c

The Belgrade childhood diabetes study - comparison of children with type 1 diabetes with their siblings.

A case-control study was conducted in Belgrade (about 320,000 inhabitants 0-16 years old) during the period 1994-97, comprising 68 diabetic children (cases) and 68 controls chosen from the siblings of the cases. Analysis using multivariable logistic regression analysis indicated the following independent risk factors for Type 1 diabetes: higher birth order, infections during the 6 months preceding the onset of the disease and stressful events. Out of individual stressful and psychological factors, 'other' stressful events (severe accident or hospitalisation or death of a close friend, conflict…

Familial clustering of major depression and anxiety disorders in Australian and Dutch twins and siblings.

The aim of this study was to investigate familial influences and their dependence on sex for panic disorder and/or agoraphobia, social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder and major depression. Data from Australian (N = 2287) and Dutch (N = 1185) twins and siblings who were selected for a linkage study and participated in clinical interviews to obtain lifetime Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; DSM-IV) diagnoses were used. In a liability model, tetrachoric correlations were estimated in sibling pairs and sex differences between sibling correlations were tested. For…

[Identification of geophilic and zoophilic dermatophytes in siblings with tinea capitis. A pathogenic factor or contamination?].

Two siblings of African origin presented with multiple scaling patches and alopecia on the scalp four weeks after returning from a vacation in Eritrea. Direct KOH examination revealed fungal elements; Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton terrestre were identified in the fungal culture. We discuss the putative pathogenic role of both microorganisms in causing disease. Although infection with Microsporum canis currently accounts for almost fifty percent of all cases of tinea capitis in Germany, other fungi have gained importance due to tourism and increasing migration.

No association between season of birth of patients with schizophrenia and risk of schizophrenia among their siblings.

Previous studies on the relationship between the season of birth of patients with schizophrenia and the risk of schizophrenia among their siblings have yielded contradictory results. We investigated whether proband's month of birth affects siblings' risk of developing schizophrenia. We used the Finnish Hospital Discharge Register to identify all patients born in Finland from 1950 to 1976 who had been hospitalized because of schizophrenia at least once between 1969 and 1995. Their siblings were identified from the National Population Register, and data on siblings were linked to the Hospital Di…
