Background: People with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) face a wide range of social barriers, including stigma, limited support, and inaccessible … dence, and perceived safety; and (3) changes in social identity, with participants shifting from a "sick role" toward identities such as "exerciser" or "athlete." These mechanisms were supported by high-quality qualitative studies and by quantitative evidence showing small-to-moderate effect sizes for improvements in self-efficacy, social participation, and …

Genetic insight into sick sinus syndrome.

AIMS: The aim of this study was to use human genetics to investigate the pathogenesis of sick sinus syndrome (SSS) and the role of risk factors in its development. METHODS AND RESULTS: We performed a genome-wide association study of 6469 SSS cases and 1 000 187 controls from deCODE genetics, the Copenhagen Hospital Biobank, UK Biobank, and the HUNT study. Variants at six loci associated with SSS, a reported missense variant in MYH6, known atrial fibrillation (AF)/electrocardiogram variants at PITX2, ZFHX3, TTN/CCDC141, and SCN10A and a low-frequency (MAF = 1.1-1.8%) missense variant, p.Gly62C

The dual contingencies of ethnoraciality: Status-context disparities in health information sources among sexual minorities.

Researchers often explore health (care) beliefs as a function of individual characteristics; yet, few consider the role of context in shapin … ntion among Black and Latino sexual minorities by improving the quality of their relationships with sick role gatekeepers and breaking down the silos of the medical complex. The study concludes by considering the value of a place-based approach to alleviating health disparities among sexual minorities vis-à-vis the health care system.

Endogenous RGS proteins modulate SA and AV nodal functions in isolated heart: implications for sick sinus syndrome and AV block.

G protein-coupled receptors play a pivotal role in regulating cardiac automaticity. Their function is controlled by regulator of G protein signaling (RGS) proteins acting as GTPase-activating proteins for Galpha subunits to suppress Galpha(i) and Galpha(q) signaling. Using knock-in mice in which Galpha(i2)-RGS binding and negative regulation are disrupted by a genomic Galpha(i2)G184S (GS) point mutation, we recently (Fu Y, Huang X, Zhong H, Mortensen RM, D'Alecy LG, Neubig RR. Circ Res 98: 659-666, 2006) showed that endogenous RGS proteins suppress muscarinic receptor-mediated bradycardia. To

[Noroviruses are the most common pathogens causing nosocomial gastroenteritis outbreaks in Hungarian hospitals].

INTRODUCTION: Norovirus (genera; previously "Norwalk-like viruses") of the family Caliciviridae are an important cause of acute gastroenteritis outbreaks. Epidemics commonly occur in crowded community and spread by fecal-oral route through contaminated food, water and direct contact. AIMS: To determine the incidence and epidemiological role of caliciviruses in nosocomial gastroenteritis outbreaks in hospitals in Hungary. METHODS: Between November 1998 and April 2002, 277 stool samples of 39 nonbacterial hospital outbreaks reported as "enteritis infectiosa" with unknown etiology from 13 of 19

Neurally mediated syncope detected by carotid sinus massage and head-up tilt test in sick sinus syndrome.

It is generally accepted that a positive response to carotid sinus massage (CSM) or head-up tilt (HUT) in patients affected by syncope suggests a reflex cause of the syncope. To study the role of the autonomic nervous system in causing syncope in the sick sinus syndrome (SSS), CSM and HUT were performed in 35 consecutive patients (20 men, mean age 70 +/- 9 years) with syncope and SSS. Results were compared with those in 35 patients affected by syncope that, despite careful cardiovascular and neurologic examination, were of uncertain origin (21 men; mean age 68 +/- 9 years) and with those of 35

Experimental bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis: a review.

Whenever a 'new' disease is discovered and the putative agent responsible is isolated, it has been customary to attempt to reproduce the disease in similar animals under controlled experimental conditions. If an identical syndrome is produced, then the agent is considered to be responsible for producing the field disease. As early as 1892, Nocard did just that in relation to bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis (shipping/transit fever). His work however, appears to have escaped the attention of many subsequent workers. In the 1930s many workers attempted to reproduce the disease with crude preparat

Maternal Stress Experience in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit after Preterm Delivery.

OBJECTIVE: Preterm delivery with the admission of a child in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is extremely challenging for parents. Being separated from the baby and seeing her infant feeling pain and being sick together with the complexity of the NICU environment, the mother experiences great anxiety, fear, and stress. The purpose of the study was to assess NICU-related stress and to identify maternal and infant factors associated with increased stress in mothers of preterm infants. STUDY DESIGN: The maternal stress level was assessed in 122 mothers of preterm infants using the Parent

Impact of the ABO and Rh Blood Groups on Malaria Incidence, Recurrence, and Severity Among a Moroccan Military Contingent in the Central African Republic.

Malaria is a persistent and serious threat to military personnel deployed in endemic regions like the Central African Republic (CAR). While we know our blood type can sometimes influence how our bodies react to malaria, the full picture isn't always clear. We conducted an eight-month study (October 2024 - May 2025) with 749 Moroccan soldiers to investigate if their ABO and Rh blood groups played a role in their risk of contracting malaria, how often they got it, or if they developed severe forms. It's important to know that these soldiers were diligently following a weekly mefloquine chemoprop

[Triggering of paroxysmal auricular fibrillation. Study using continuous electrocardiographic recording (Holter system)].

Recent studies of the mode of initiation of atrial fibrillation (AF) have emphasises the role of the autonomic nervous system, vagal and sympathetic, in the development of this arrhythmia. Continuous 24 hour electrocardiographic recording (Holter monitoring) is a good method of studying arrhythmias. The role of vagal or sympathetic stimulation was evaluated by retrospective analysis of 3 000 Holter recordings performed in our department. Three groups of patients were identified: Group I, patients with bradycardia at the time of onset of AF (sinus rhythm less than 60/min); Group II, patients wi

The world's longest surviving paediatric practices: some themes of Aboriginal medical ethnobotany in Australia.

Contemporary paediatric practices of Australian Aboriginal men and women, in more than 100 Aboriginal Language Groups, comprise a living discipline whose origins predate Western medicine by tens of millennia. The history of paediatrics acknowledges this surviving continuum of the world's oldest child-care practices. Because of the inextricable nexus between Aboriginal men and women and the land in which they live, medical ethnobotany forms a major part of the medical aspects of Aboriginal child care. Traditional tribal healers, called 'Nungungi' in some language groups of Central Australia, ar

Developing interferon-β as a safe in vivo experimental-medicine model of human inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation is increasingly implicated in a wide range of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders from depression to dementia. Compelling evidence for an inflammatory role in these disorders includes experimental-medicine studies with IFN-α and endotoxin, alongside therapeutic benefits observed with anti-cytokine agents. AIM: To develop and characterise a new, safe in-vivo mild inflammatory response that is titratable, elicits robust host sickness manifestations within an experimentally tractable timeframe, and has minimal cardiovascular effects, avoiding the requirement

Minimal Detectable Change Scores and Factors Associated With Dynamic Exertion Test (EXiT) Performance After Sport-Related Concussion.

BACKGROUND: Factors associated with performance outside of a normative range on dynamic exertion test (EXiT) after sport-related concussion (SRC) remain unknown. This study examined the role of demographic and medical history factors on performance using minimal detectable change (MDC) cutoff scores in athletes being cleared to return to sport (RTS) from SRC. HYPOTHESIS: Older age, being female, and body mass index (BMI) ≥50th percentile would be associated with worse EXiT performance and with increased likelihood of falling outside the normative MDC score range. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectiona

Impact of virtual reality headset use on eye blinking and lipid layer thickness.

PURPOSE: Blinking plays an important role in protecting the eyes, and the use of computers has been associated with a reduction in the blink rate. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of a virtual reality headset on blinking and lipid layer thickness and to compare these data to those associated with a conventional desktop monitor. METHODS: Two experiments were performed to compare the effect of 20minutes of use of a virtual reality headset (FOVE) and 20minutes of use of a desktop monitor on the frequency and length of blinks (experiment 1, 15 participants) and on the thickness o

Brain Activation by H1 Antihistamines Challenges Conventional View of Their Mechanism of Action in Motion Sickness: A Behavioral, c-Fos and Physiological Study in Suncus murinus (House Musk Shrew).

Motion sickness occurs under a variety of circumstances and is common in the general population. It is usually associated with changes in gastric motility, and hypothermia, which are argued to be surrogate markers for nausea; there are also reports that respiratory function is affected. As laboratory rodents are incapable of vomiting, Suncus murinus was used to model motion sickness and to investigate changes in gastric myoelectric activity (GMA) and temperature homeostasis using radiotelemetry, whilst also simultaneously investigating changes in respiratory function using whole body plethysmo

SCN5A c.4720G> A: a rare genetic variant associated with familial sick sinus syndrome and sudden cardiac death.

BACKGROUND: The cardiac voltage-gated sodium channel Nav1.5, encoded by SCN5A, plays a critical role in cardiac electrophysiology. SCN5A variants represent a series of frequently identified genetic findings in molecular autopsies, with established associations across multiple arrhythmia syndromes including long QT syndrome type 3, Brugada syndrome, progressive cardiac conduction disease, sinus node dysfunction, atrial fibrillation, atrial standstill, and dilated cardiomyopathy. Recently, an increasing number of familial cases with early-onset sick sinus syndrome (SSS) were reported, bringing m

Prevalence and risk factors for depression in factitious disorder: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Factitious disorder is characterized by a pattern of abnormal behavior in which patients deliberately produce, falsify, or exaggerate physical and/or psychological symptoms that have no, or little, organic basis, to assume the sick role. In the context of a factitious disorder, depression can be both a feigned disease and an associated comorbidity. We performed a systematic review to provide an overview of the relationship between factitious disorder and depression, describe the prevalence of depression in factitious disorder, and identify factors that can contribute to the developm…

Short-term economic evaluation of physical activity-based corporate health programs: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Corporate health programs (CHPs) aim to improve employees' health through health promotion strategies at the workplace. Physical activity (PA) plays a crucial role in primary prevention, leading many companies to implement PA-based CHPs. However, there is limited examination in the scientific literature on whether PA-based CHPs (PA-CHPs) lead to economic benefits. This systematic review aimed to summarize the available literature on the economic aspects of PA-CHPs. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to identify studies focused on PA-CHPs targeting healthy sedentary workers

Frailty and sarcopenia in patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure: Assessment and risk in the liver transplant setting.

Frailty and sarcopenia are well-recognized factors related to worse outcomes in patients with cirrhosis, including liver transplant (LT) candidates. Implications of pre-LT functional and muscle deterioration also affect post-LT outcomes. Patients with cirrhosis and acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) have a lower survival rate, both before and after LT. There is a need to better identify those patients with ACLF who would benefit from LT. This review aims to present the available data about frailty and sarcopenia in patients with ACLF in the LT setting. An exhaustive review of the published
