Walking autonomy in chronic dialysis patients: insights from a nationwide registry and focus group analysis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) requiring kidney replacement therapy experience a loss in walking autonomy. This study used data from the French Renal Epidemiology and Information Network in Nephrology (REIN) registry and those from the National Health Data System [Système national des Données de Santé (SNDS)] to assess associations between walking inabilities and patient characteristics. METHODS: We extracted data on all patients receiving kidney replacement therapy in France as of 31 December 2020. We used logistic regression to evaluate data associated with walking a

Sexually dimorphic neuroanatomical differences relate to ASD-relevant behavioral outcomes in a maternal autoantibody mouse model.

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) autoantibodies reactive to fetal brain proteins in mothers of children with ASD have been described by several groups. To understand their pathologic significance, we developed a mouse model of maternal autoantibody related ASD (MAR-ASD) utilizing the peptide epitopes from human autoantibody reactivity patterns. Male and female offspring prenatally exposed to the salient maternal autoantibodies displayed robust deficits in social interactions and increased repetitive self-grooming behaviors as juveniles and adults. In the present study, neuroanatomical differences in adu

Quantifying the community transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a rapidly growing Chinese city: a nine-year population-based genomic and spatial analysis.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant public health threat in urbanizing regions of China, where shifting population dynamics and migration may amplify TB transmission. We conducted a nine-year prospective epidemiological study of culture-positive TB patients diagnosed in Shenzhen, between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2022, and employed whole-genome sequencing analysis to describe local transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Mtb transmission hotspots were identified using a non-parametric distance-based mapping approach. We applied a spatially structured logistic regression and

Networked partisanship and framing: A socio-semantic network analysis of the Italian debate on migration.

The huge amount of data made available by the massive usage of social media has opened up the unprecedented possibility to carry out a data-driven study of political processes. While particular attention has been paid to phenomena like elite and mass polarization during online debates and echo-chambers formation, the interplay between online partisanship and framing practices, jointly sustaining adversarial dynamics, still remains overlooked. With the present paper, we carry out a socio-semantic analysis of the debate about migration policies observed on the Italian Twittersphere, across the p

Total glucosides of paeony ameliorate post-stroke depression-like behaviors by modulating inflammasome activation via inhibition of endoplasmic reticulum stress.

BACKGROUND: Paeonia lactiflora Pall., a medicinal herb with a documented history of over one millennium in traditional Chinese medicine, has been widely employed for its hepatoprotective and antidepressant effects. Total glucosides of paeony (TGP) is a class of bioactive compounds derived from the roots of Paeonia lactiflora Pall., have attracted considerable scientific interest in recent years owing to their demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, and neuroprotective properties. However, the exact molecular mechanisms by which TGP regulates inflammatory pathways and its therapeutic be

Social Determinants and Military Veterans' Suicide Ideation and Attempt: a Cross-sectional Analysis of Electronic Health Record Data.

BACKGROUND: Health care systems struggle to identify risk factors for suicide. Adverse social determinants of health (SDH) are strong predictors of suicide risk, but most electronic health records (EHR) do not include SDH data. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of SDH documentation in the EHR and how SDH are associated with suicide ideation and attempt. DESIGN: This cross-sectional analysis included EHR data spanning October 1, 2015-September 30, 2016, from the Veterans Integrated Service Network Region 4. PARTICIPANTS: The study included all patients with at least one inpatient or out

The influence of childhood abuse and prenatal intimate partner violence on childbirth experiences and breastfeeding outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Despite the detrimental effects and life-course health consequences of violence exposure, relatively few studies have adequate capacity to investigate the evolution of violence from childhood to motherhood. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the cyclical nature of childhood abuse and prenatal inter-partner violent victimization (p-IPV) and its adverse impact on childbirth trauma and exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) practice in Vietnam. METHOD: Using a prospective birth cohort, 150 pregnant women were recruited in the third trimester of pregnancy in Hue city in central Vietnam (Wa

Applying a Network Approach To Characterize Gender Differences in Conduct Problems and Callous-Unemotional Traits among Children from Two Countries.

Callous-unemotional (CU) traits (i.e., low empathy, restricted guilt, limited prosociality) are associated with severe conduct problems (CP) across development. However, there is heterogeneity in how CP and CU traits manifest at different ages, between boys and girls, in different countries, and different measures. The current study investigated this heterogeneity by applying network analysis to two large mixed-gender samples from the United States (US) and Spain assessed at different ages, with parent ratings of CP, conduct disorder (CD) symptoms, and CU traits. Data were from the ABCD baseli

The Associations Between Income and Depression: A Cross-National Analysis.

Depression remains one of the most prevalent global mental health challenges, while prior research has often examined its determinants through fragmented and isolated perspectives. A multidimensional understanding of how biological, psychological, social, and sociocultural factors jointly shape depression risk remains limited, particularly across national contexts. Using data from three nationally representative cohorts in the United Kingdom (Understanding Society: The UK Household Longitudinal Study), the United States (Midlife in the United States), and China (China Health and Retirement Lon

Poststroke depression in Chinese patients: frequency, psychosocial, clinical, and radiological determinants.

This study attempted to evaluate the psychosocial, clinical, and radiological predictors of poststroke depression (PSD) in Chinese patients. One hundred eighty-nine patients participated in the study. Three months after the index stroke, a psychiatrist administered the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV to all of the patients and made a DSM-IV diagnosis of depression. In addition, a host of demographic, clinical, and radiological variables were examined. Thirty-one (16.4%) of the patients had a diagnosis of PSD that included major depression (n=11, 5.8%,), minor depression (n=16, 8.5%),

Label-Free Proteomic Profiling of the dvls2 (CL2006) Caenorhabditis elegans Alzheimer's Disease (AD) Model Reveals Conserved Molecular Signatures Shared With the Human AD Brain.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia, posing significant challenges to cognitive, emotional, social, and financial well-being. The biochemical and molecular pathways associated with AD are complex, making it difficult to study and simulate in patients or through in vitro research. Thus, animal models play a crucial role in investigating the development and progression of AD. One widely used model in neuroscience studies is the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). The development of transgenic animals has allowed for the construction of the dvls2 (CL

Understanding the psychological impact of flooding on older adults: A scoping review.

Flooding is increasing in frequency and intensity as a function of climate change. Older populations are vulnerable to the physical and mental health impacts of flooding, having less ability to cope and fewer rescue possibilities compared to younger ages, with resulting mental health impacts. This scoping review, based on JBI Scoping Review Methodology, scoped and summarized the evidence for the psychological impacts of flooding on older adults. Electronic databases were searched for reports of direct or indirect experiences of flooding in older adults globally (mental health, well-being, emot

Sales and Advertising Channels of New Psychoactive Substances (NPS): Internet, Social Networks, and Smartphone Apps.

In the last decade, the trend of drug consumption has completely changed, and several new psychoactive substances (NPS) have appeared on the drug market as legal alternatives to common drugs of abuse. Designed to reproduce the effects of illegal substances like cannabis, ecstasy, cocaine, or ketamine, NPS are only in part controlled by UN conventions and represent an emerging threat to global public health. The effects of NPS greatly differ from drug to drug and relatively scarce information is available at present about their pharmacology and potential toxic effects. Yet, compared to more tra

'It pushed me back into the human race': evaluative findings from a community Christmas event.

Many older people in Britain spend Christmas day alone. The Christmas period may be especially difficult for older people who are socially isolated, living with dementia or who have physical impairments, and may feel particularly marginalised at this time of year. This paper draws on evaluative research findings from a community Christmas event held in December 2014 at the University of Salford for older people and their carers who would be on their own on Christmas day. A multi-method approach was employed, seven guests took part in semi-structured interviews to explore their experiences and

Inkwari: an emerging high-risk place potentiating hiv spread among young adults in a hyper-endemic South African setting.

Young adults in South Africa are at the epicenter of the HIV epidemic. The prevalence of HIV among young people in the province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is particularly high. This study characterizes inkwari (Zulu word for raves or weekend-long parties) in eThekwini District, KZN and explored how these place-based dynamics shape the risk environment for the young adult attendees. In 2011, 13 qualitative interviews were conducted with men and women between 18 and 30 years-old who reported unprotected sex with at least one casual partner in the prior 3 months and attended an inkwari in the same ti
