The association between longitudinal changes in inter-hemispheric IPS functional connectivity and math gains depends on children's age and task requirements.

The role of the approximate number system (ANS) in scaffolding symbolic mathematics remains unresolved. A prior neuroimaging study from our group (Suárez-Pellicioni & Booth, 2018) found no significant longitudinal effects of ANS acuity-indexed by intraparietal sulcus (IPS) activation-on gains in math fluency. However, the absence of age-specific analyses and exclusive focus on fluency, which emphasizes retrieval, may have contributed to these null findings. To address these limitations, the present study examined whether age moderates the relationship between inter-hemispheric IPS functional c

Mild forced exercise in young mice prevents anergia induced by dopamine depletion in late adulthood: Relation to CDNF and DARPP-32 phosphorylation patterns in nucleus accumbens.

Mesolimbic dopamine (DA) plays a critical role in behavioral activation and exertion of effort in motivated behaviors. DA antagonism and depletion in nucleus accumbens (Nacb) induces anergia in effort-based decision-making tasks. Exercise improves motor function in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the beneficial effects of physical exercise on anergia, a symptom present in many psychiatric and neurological pathologies needs to be studied. During 9 weeks, young CD1 male mice were trained to run at a moderate speed in automatically turning running wheels (RW) (forced exercise group) or locked

Dopamine differentially modulates medial temporal lobe activity and behavior during spatial navigation in young and older adults.

Aging is associated with changes in spatial navigation behavior. In addition to an overall performance decline, older adults tend to rely more on proximal location cue information than on environmental boundary information during spatial navigation compared to young adults. The fact that older adults are more susceptible to errors during spatial navigation might be partly attributed to deficient dopaminergic modulation of hippocampal and striatal functioning. Hence, elevating dopamine levels might differentially modulate spatial navigation and memory performance in young and older adults. In t

An Update on Outcomes for COPD Pharmacological Trials: A COPD Investigators Report - Reassessment of the 2008 American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society Statement on Outcomes for COPD Pharmacological Trials.

Background: In 2008, a dedicated American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society task force published a paper on the possible use and limitations of clinical outcomes and biomarkers to evaluate the impact of pharmacological therapy in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Since then, our scientific understanding of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has increased considerably; there has been a progressive shift from a one-size-fits-all diagnostic and therapeutic approach to a personalized approach; and many new treatments currently in development will require new endpo

Adaptive short-term plasticity in the typical reading network.

The left temporo-parietal cortex (TPC) is crucial for phonological decoding, i.e., for learning and retaining sound-letter mappings, and appears hypoactive in dyslexia. Here, we tested the causal contribution of this area for reading in typical readers with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and explored the reading network's response with fMRI. By investigating the underlying neural correlates of stimulation-induced modulations of the reading network, we can help improve targeted interventions for individuals with dyslexia. 28 typical adult readers overtly read simple and complex words a

Lower pro- to anti-inflammatory ratios associated with reduced neurocognitive flexibility in symptomatic adolescents with bipolar disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), are elevated among adolescents and adults with bipolar disorder (BD), particularly during symptomatic episodes. Neurocognition, predominantly in the domain of executive function, is also impaired among adults and youth with BD. In adults with BD, CRP is negatively associated with neurocognitive functioning. We aim to investigate this relationship in BD adolescents. METHODS: Serum levels of CRP and five other inflammatory markers (interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-10, IL-4 and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF)) were exami

Noninvasive Brain Stimulation Rescues Cocaine-Induced Prefrontal Hypoactivity and Restores Flexible Behavior.

BACKGROUND: To obtain desirable goals, individuals must predict the outcome of specific choices, use that information to direct appropriate actions, and adjust behavior accordingly in changing environments (behavioral flexibility). Substance use disorders are marked by impairments in behavioral flexibility along with decreased prefrontal cortical function that limits the efficacy of treatment strategies. Restoring prefrontal hypoactivity, ideally in a noninvasive manner, is an intriguing target for improving flexible behavior and treatment outcomes. METHODS: A behavioral flexibility task was

Unilateral accumbal dopamine depletion affects decision-making in a side-specific manner.

Mechanisms underlying affective and cognitive deficits in Parkinson's disease (PD) remain less studied than motor symptoms. Nucleus accumbens (NAc) is affected in PD and due to its well-known involvement in motivation is an interesting target in this context. Furthermore, PD is frequently asymmetrical, with side-specific deficits aligning with evidences of accumbal laterality. We therefore used a 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) model to study the role of left and right NAc dopamine depletion in a battery of behavioral tasks. 2 months old male rats were used in all experiments. Habitual-based and go

Visual Search in Amblyopia: Abnormal Fixational Eye Movements and Suboptimal Sampling Strategies.

PURPOSE: Microsaccades shift the image on the fovea and counteract visual fading. They are also thought to serve as an optimal sampling strategy while viewing complex visual scenes. The goal of our study was to assess visual search in amblyopic children. METHODS: Twenty-one amblyopic children with varying severity of amblyopia and 10 healthy controls were recruited. Eye movements were recorded using infrared video-oculography during amblyopic and fellow eye viewing while the subjects performed (1) visual fixation, (2) exploration of a blank scene, and (3) visual search task (spot the differen

Aged Chinese-origin rhesus macaques infected with SIV develop marked viremia in absence of clinical disease, inflammation or cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: Damage to the central nervous system during HIV infection can lead to variable neurobehavioral dysfunction termed HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). There is no clear consensus regarding the neuropathological or cellular basis of HAND. We sought to study the potential contribution of aging to the pathogenesis of HAND. Aged (range = 14.7-24.8 year) rhesus macaques of Chinese origin (RM-Ch) (n = 23) were trained to perform cognitive tasks. Macaques were then divided into four groups to assess the impact of SIVmac251 infection (n = 12) and combined antiretroviral therapy

Calibration of the Leg Muscle Responses Elicited by Predictable Perturbations of Stance and the Effect of Vision.

Motor adaptation due to task practice implies a gradual shift from deliberate control of behavior to automatic processing, which is less resource- and effort-demanding. This is true both for deliberate aiming movements and for more stereotyped movements such as locomotion and equilibrium maintenance. Balance control under persisting critical conditions would require large conscious and motor effort in the absence of gradual modification of the behavior. We defined time-course of kinematic and muscle features of the process of adaptation to repeated, predictable perturbations of balance eliciti

Neural networks underlying the metacognitive uncertainty response.

Humans monitor states of uncertainty that can guide decision-making. These uncertain states are evident behaviorally when humans decline to make a categorization response. Such behavioral uncertainty responses (URs) have also defined the search for metacognition in animals. While a plethora of neuroimaging studies have focused on uncertainty, the brain systems supporting a volitional strategy shift under uncertainty have not been distinguished from those observed in making introspective post-hoc reports of categorization uncertainty. Using rapid event-related fMRI, we demonstrate that the neur

The Effect of Positive and Negative Feedback on Risk-Taking across Different Contexts.

Preferences for risky choices have often been shown to be unstable and context-dependent. Though people generally avoid gambles with mixed outcomes, a phenomenon often attributed to loss aversion, contextual factors can impact this dramatically. For example, people typically prefer risky options after a financial loss, while generally choosing safer options after a monetary gain. However, it is unclear what exactly contributes to these preference shifts as a function of prior outcomes, as these gain/loss outcomes are usually confounded with participant performance, and therefore it is unclear

Characterisation of spatial neglect induced by unilateral 6-OHDA lesions on a choice reaction time task in rats.

Unilateral dopamine depletion and excitotoxic lesions of the striatum have been shown to induce a contralateral neglect when rats have to respond in a choice reaction time setting. Whereas, in a lateralised setting when response options are to either side of the animal's head all contralateral responding is impaired, testing animals only on one side of the head per day but with a near and far response option, rats are able to correctly respond to contralateral stimuli, but rather bias their responses towards the near hole. Here, we further investigated the nature of the contralateral neglect i

Comparative neuropsychological profile of pathological gambling, hypersexuality, and compulsive eating in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders (ICDs), in particular pathological gambling, hypersexuality, and compulsive eating, are being increasingly identified in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Pathological gambling has been associated with frontal/executive dysfunctions, whereas hypersexuality and compulsive eating, and their relation with cognitive dysfunctions, have not been investigated in PD. METHODS: We investigated cognitive correlates underpinning pathological gambling, hypersexuality, and compulsive eating in PD. PD outpatients were screened for pathological gambling, hypersexuality,

The effects of constraint-induced movement therapy for a child less than one year of age.

The aim of this single case study was to determine the effectiveness of a modified version of constraint-induced movement therapy (mCIMT) on a child less than one year of age with a diagnosis of hemiplegic cerebral palsy. A single-subject ABAB design with a 6-month follow-up evaluation used repeated measures of gross and fine motor skills to determine changes at each phase of the study. Measures included the Peabody Developmental Motor Scale-2 (PDMS-2), the Gross Motor Fine Motor Measure-88 (GMFM-88) and videotape analysis of specific motor skills typically seen in children less than one year

Executive function in parents of children with autism.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that individuals with autism show impaired performance on tests of executive function (Ozonoff et al. 1991, 1993; Hughes & Russell, 1993; Hughes et al. 1994). There is also strong evidence for genetic involvement in autism (see Rutter, 1991 for review). If executive dysfunction is a core impairment in autism, then similar impairments are hypothesized to exist in a subtler form among the parents of autistic children. METHODS: Forty parents of autistic children were compared with 40 parents of learning disabled children and 36 adults from unaffected famil

[Dynamics of memory retrieval in health and diseases].

Memory retrieval is not a static readout of fixed traces but a dynamic regulatory process where the accessibility of engrams, neuronal ensembles that are active during learning, fluctuates with internal and external states. Recent studies suggest that such variability may support adaptive, selective access to behaviorally relevant memories. Here, we review how contextual, stress-related, bodily, and brain-state factors regulate retrieval via engram state transitions and network-level control. Retrieval is facilitated when the external context or affective state at test matches that at encoding

Muscle Coordination During an Endurance Walking Task With Elbow Exosuit Assistance.

Exosuits have the potential to support human performance during daily and rehabilitation activities. Understanding how neuromuscular coordination adapts in response to external assistance is essential to designing assistive devices and control strategies that interact effectively with the human motor system. In this work, we investigate muscle synergies and networks in ten healthy adults performing an isometric load-carrying task during treadmill walking, assisted by a hybrid soft-rigid elbow exosuit. Comparison between assisted and unassisted conditions showed that, although the overall netwo
