Seroprevalence of spotted fever group rickettsiae in canines along the United States-Mexico border.

Portions of northern Mexico are experiencing a re-emergence of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), a tickborne disease caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, a member of the spotted fever group of rickettsiae (SFGR). Infection with R. rickettsii can result in serious and life-threatening illness in people and dogs. Canine seroprevalence has been used as a sentinel for human RMSF in previous studies. This study aims to quantify SFGR seroprevalence in canines in three northern Mexican states and identify risk factors associated with seropositivity. A total of 1,136 serum samples and 942 ticks were ob

Recent applications of the Dot-ELISA in immunoparasitology.

The dot enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Dot-ELISA) is a highly versatile solid-phase immunoassay for antibody or antigen detection. The assay uses minute amounts of reagent dotted onto solid surfaces such as nitrocellulose and other paper membranes which avidly bind proteins. After incubation with antigen-specific antibody and enzyme-conjugated anti-antibody, the addition of a precipitable, chromogenic substrate causes the formation of a colored dot on the solid phase which is visually read. The Dot-ELISA has been used extensively in the detection of human and veterinary protozoan and metaz

First detection of Babesia spp. in Amblyomma mixtum from Veracruz, Mexico.

Tick-borne diseases pose a major threat to cattle production in Mexico, with bovine babesiosis caused by Babesia bigemina and Babesia bovis being among the most severe. While the invasive tick Rhipicephalus microplus is the primary vector, increasing infestations by the native Amblyomma mixtum raise concerns about its potential role in pathogen transmission. This study assessed the diversity and minimum infection rate (MIR) of piroplasmids in R. microplus and A. mixtum across 15 municipalities in Veracruz, Mexico. Ticks were collected from hosts and the environment between June 2023 and March

[Viremia in patients with tick-borne encephalitis and in persons with attached ixodes ticks].

An original method of virus isolation developed by the authors made it possible to collect 64 strains of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus isolated from the blood of TBE patients and subjects complaining of sucking Ixodidae ticks. It is demonstrated that only a small part of the tick natural population cause acute TBE. The majority of the strains (54 isolates) of TBE virus have been isolated from the blood of clinically healthy subjects. Half of the strains showed no immunogenic properties in human body. Season infectivity corresponds to monthly virusophority of the ticks.

An alternative to killing? Treatment of reservoir hosts to control a vector and pathogen in a susceptible species.

Parasite-mediated apparent competition occurs when one species affects another through the action of a shared parasite. One way of controlling the parasite in the more susceptible host is to manage the reservoir host. Culling can cause issues in terms of ethics and biodiversity impacts, therefore we ask: can treating, as compared to culling, a wildlife host protect a target species from the shared parasite? We used Susceptible Infected Recovered (SIR) models parameterized for the tick-borne louping ill virus (LIV) system. Deer are the key hosts of the vector (Ixodes ricinus) that transmits LIV

Emerging tick-borne disease in African vipers caused by a Cowdria-like organism.

Heartwater is a tick-borne infectious disease caused by the rickettsial organism Cowdria ruminantium, currently Ehrlichia ruminantium. It poses an imminent threat to the Western Hemisphere, where it could cause mortality in cattle and other ruminant livestock in excess of 70%. It has been reported in the Caribbean; and its vector, Amblyomma sparsum, has been found on imported African spurred tortoises (Geochelone sulcata) and leopard tortoises (Geochelone pardalis) in southern Florida in the United States, leading to an importation ban on these reptiles. Symptoms have not been previously repor

Acaricidal and repellent properties of permethrin, its role in reducing transmission of vector-borne pathogens.

Vector-borne pathogens causing canine vector-borne diseases (CVBD) are recognized as being of increasing importance in small animal clinics. The pathogens and their vectors (eg, fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and sand flies) have a global distribution. Their prevalence may vary depending on region, climate, hygiene and many other factors; however the risk of infection for companion animals in our highly developed and supposedly regulated environments will never be zero. Even in highly developed markets, with high socioeconomic standards, ectoparasites are still a threat to both pets and humans. One

Tick-borne parasitic diseases in cattle: current knowledge and prospective risk analysis related to the ongoing evolution in French cattle farming systems.

Parasitic diseases, like babesiosis and theileriosis are transmitted by ticks: their occurrence is therefore linked to the size of the tick stock and the seasonality of the vectors. Babesia divergens bovine babesiosis transmitted by Ixodes ricinus is widespread and often reported in France. Serological prevalence is high, ranging from 20 to 80% according to the farms. Clinical incidence is low: around 0.4% for the whole cattle population. The endemic situation is unstable and clinical cases occur more frequently with farming system modifications. L. ricinus is a tick essentially found in woodl

Mapping the potential suitable habitats for Hyalomma rufipes (Acari: Ixodidae) in Africa and Western Eurasia.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever is a broadly distributed tick-borne disease and is caused by the arthropod-borne Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV). Hyalomma ticks have been associated with the circulation of the virus in natural foci and in laboratory experiments. One of the main species, Hyalomma rufipes, is originally distributed in Africa. However, anthropogenic activities, bird migration, and domestic animal movement, could break the natural barriers that prevent its spread out of its natural area of colonization. This study explored the potential suitable areas for H. rufipes

First molecular detection of Borrelia theileri subclinical infection in a cow from Brazil.

Borrelia theileri is a relapsing fever group Borrelia that is transmitted to cattle by ticks of the genus Rhipicephalus. In this study, we describe the first molecular detection of B. theileri subclinical infection in a cow in Brazil. During the examination of stained blood smears of 10 cows from a farm with a recent history of fatal Trypanosoma vivax trypanosomiasis, spirochete-like structures were incidentally detected in one of the cows. The animal presented good body score, normal hematocrit and normal-colored ocular mucosa. Temperature, heart rate and respiratory rate were all normal. The

The role of juvenile Dermacentor reticulatus ticks as vectors of microorganisms and the problem of 'meal contamination'.

Juvenile Dermacentor reticulatus ticks inhabit nests and burrows of their rodent hosts and cannot be collected from vegetation. To detect vertical transmission of Babesia canis in D. reticulatus, we studied larvae and nymphs collected from rodents. However, the molecular techniques used for detection of pathogen DNA are sensitive enough to detect not only pathogens vectored by ticks but also those taken up with current or previous blood meals ('meal contamination') or just present in the environment and on the tick or host surface ('environmental contaminations'). Thus, an additional aim of ou

Insight into oriental theileriosis: Indian perspective.

Theileria orientalis, an emerging haemoprotozoa, primarily targets large ruminants, especially cattle. Being a globally distributed haemoprotozoa, it causes oriental theileriosis, which is transmitted by the tick vector Haemaphysalis longicornis. In tropical countries, such as India, Rhipicephalus microplus (Asian Blue tick) is another potential vector for disease transmission. Unlike T. parva and T. annulata, schizonts of T. orientalis are non-lymphoproliferative in nature and the main pathogenic effect is contributed by the piroplasms destroying erythrocytes, resulting in anemia. The T. orie

First identification of Cytauxzoon manul in Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in northwestern China.

BACKGROUND: Multiple species of the genera Cytauxzoon and Hepatozoon can infect wild felines, but the diversity of these and other apicomplexan parasites in Eurasian lynx is scarcely known. The aim of this study was to detect Cytauxzoon and Hepatozoon species with molecular methods in Eurasian lynxes and their ticks in northwestern China. METHODS: DNA was extracted from the heart, liver, spleen, lung, and kidney samples of three Eurasian lynxes as well as from their five ixodid ticks. These DNA samples were screened with polymerase chain reactions (PCRs) for Cytauxzoon with the partial cytoch
