The aim of this study was to evaluate long-term (more than 5 years) quality of life issues after parotidectomy for the treatment of benign disease. A questionnaire survey was performed after institutional review board approval, on patients who had undergone any type of parotidectomy for benign salivary diseases. Fifty-three patients were surveyed at more than 5 years (the long term group) and 39 patients at 1-2 years after surgery (the control group). The questionnaire included the items on self perception of known sequelae. Descriptive and comparative analyses were performed to determine majo

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To assess, in individuals referred for evaluation of obstructive sleep apnea, the potential clinical significance of brief versus longer arousals from sleep.
METHODS: Full-night polysomnographic tracings from 100 patients referred for evaluation of obstructive sleep apnea were analyzed to delineate the duration of each arousal event. These data were then correlated to the patient's subjective perception of sleepiness as estimated by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS).
RESULTS: A significant relationship (p < .0001, r(2) = .167) was noted between the frequency of the longer

Sensory thresholds for vibrations and electrical shocks and the sensory nerve conduction velocity (median nerve) were measured during 30 minutes of induced limb ischaemia in 10 normal subjects and 15 patients with chronic hepatic failure. Sensory action potentials were recorded simultaneously at the wrist and elbow. Seven patients (group A) had a normal perception time for vibrations. As in normal subjects, the potential amplitude decreased from the onset of ischaemia, more pronounced at the elbow than at the wrist, and the conduction velocity became reduced more rapidly in the wrist-elbow tha

Depressive symptoms have been associated with lower cardiac autonomic control, thus contributing to cardiovascular diseases, especially among older adults. Interpersonal factors have been found to attenuate physiologic stress responses, but little is known about whether these factors (e.g., perceived affiliation) would moderate the relation of depressive symptoms and cardiovascular activation. The present research aimed to investigate the interplay of depressive symptoms and momentary-assessed interpersonal perceptions on cardiac vagal tone as indexed by heart rate variability (HRV). The sampl

OBJECTIVES: Based on the evidence that the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) is the main region affected by the aging process, and that tDCS modulates cortical excitability, the aim of the study is to prove the feasibility of tDCS for pain perception and executive function of community-dwelling elderly individuals.
METHODS: We performed a double-blind, single-arm trial, including a sham period. 5 consecutive anodal tDCS was applied over DLPFC of twenty-four elderly for 20 min during each intervention periods (in order of Sham-1 mA-2 mA). First, we classified chronic non-inflammatory pain

The perception-action model with its assumptions of distinct visual pathways for perception and visuomotor control has been highly influential but also contentious. The controversy largely focused on the evidence from studies on perceptual illusions and this scientific field has been reviewed quite a few times in recent years. In contrast another aspect of the model, namely the role of visual memory in action control, received comparatively little attention. With respect to visual memory the perception-action model proposes that only the perceptual or ventral stream can maintain a sustained re

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on healthcare systems worldwide, leading to significant disruptions in healthcare services and an increase in delayed or foregone care. South Korea has been no exception. While the importance of public perceptions of COVID-19 and healthcare use has been recognized, how such perceptions shape healthcare-seeking behaviour remains underexplored in the Korean context. The aim of this study was to examine the association between public perceptions of preventive measures and instances of delayed or foregone care during the early phase of the pandemic i

Hearing helps us know where we are relative to important events and objects in our environment and it allows us to track our changing position dynamically over space and time. Auditory cues are used in combination with other sensory inputs (visual, vestibular, proprioceptive) to help us perceive our own movements through space, known as self-motion perception. Whether we are maintaining standing balance, walking, or driving, audition can provide unique and important information to help optimize self-motion perception, and consequently to support safe mobility. Recent epidemiological and experi

Imaging and neurocognitive studies have searched for the brain areas involved in speech perception, specifically when speech is accompanied by noise, attempting to identify the underlying neural mechanism(s). Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a noninvasive, painless cortical neuromodulation technique, has been used to either excite or inhibit brain activity in order to better understand the neural mechanism underlying speech perception in noise. In the present study, anodal (excitatory) and cathodal (inhibitory) stimulations were performed on 48 participants, either over the left

BACKGROUND: Although neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) has high recurrence and disability rates, cases of relapses can be recognized, and timely intervention can be provided if the risk of relapse is properly perceived. However, there have been no studies to explore patients' perceptions of recurrence risk and coping strategies. This study aimed to explore the characteristics of relapse risk perception and coping strategies of patients with NMOSD.
METHODS: We adopted the phenomenological method of qualitative research. Face-to-face, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conduc

OBJECTIVE: An important goal of neuroprosthetic research is to establish bidirectional communication between the user and new prosthetic limbs that are capable of controlling >20 different movements. One strategy for achieving this goal is to interface the prosthetic limb directly with efferent and afferent fibres in the peripheral nervous system using an array of intrafascicular microelectrodes. This approach would provide access to a large number of independent neural pathways for controlling high degree-of-freedom prosthetic limbs, as well as evoking multiple-complex sensory percepts.

BACKGROUND: Visual neglect is one of the most frequent neuropsychological consequences of acute brain damage. Generally, paper-and-pencil tests, administered in the peripersonal space, are used to establish the presence of neglect. However, the multidimensional nature of neglect makes the diagnostic process challenging. Neglect varies, among other things, in spatial regions; that is, personal, peripersonal, and extrapersonal space.
OBJECTIVE: In this feasibility study, we aim to establish the reliability and validity of a newly developed Functional ExtraPersonal Space Neglect Test (FEPSNeT) e

In noisy environments, filtering out the relevant speech signal from the background noise is a major challenge. Visual cues, such as lip movements, can improve speech understanding. This suggests that lip movements carry information about speech features (e.g. speech envelope, formants, word onsets) that can be used to aid speech understanding. Moreover, the isolated visual or tactile presentation of the speech envelope can also aid word recognition. However, the evidence in this area is rather mixed, and formants and word onsets have not been studied in this context. This online study investi

Prism adaptation training (PAT) as a treatment for visuospatial neglect (VSN) involves two components: recalibration and realignment. We conducted a randomized controlled trial with PAT protocols requiring different degrees of recalibration and realignment, by using a single or multi-step protocol and varying visibility of the pointing movement. Twenty-five VSN patients received an alertness treatment without prisms, followed by four PAT protocols, encompassing a multi- or single-step procedure with terminal exposure, a single-step procedure with concurrent exposure, and sham PAT, presented in

Research in humans and animal models suggests that visual responses in early visual cortical areas may be modulated by top-down influences from distant cortical areas, particularly in the frontal and parietal regions. The right posterior parietal cortex is part of a broad cortical network involved in aspects of visual search and attention, but its role in modulating activity in early visual cortical areas is less well understood. This study evaluated the influence of right posterior parietal cortex (PPC) on a direct measure of visual processing in humans. Contrast sensitivity (CS) and detectio

Localizing touch relies on the activation of skin-based and externally defined spatial frames of reference. Psychophysical studies have demonstrated that early visual deprivation prevents the automatic remapping of touch into external space. We used fMRI to characterize how visual experience impacts the brain circuits dedicated to the spatial processing of touch. Sighted and congenitally blind humans performed a tactile temporal order judgment (TOJ) task, either with the hands uncrossed or crossed over the body midline. Behavioral data confirmed that crossing the hands has a detrimental effect

When an object moves behind a bush, for example, its visible fragments are revealed at different times and locations across the visual field. Nonetheless, a whole moving object is perceived. Unlike traditional modal and amodal completion mechanisms known to support spatial form integration when all parts of a stimulus are simultaneously visible, relatively little is known about the neural substrates of the spatiotemporal form integration (STFI) processes involved in generating coherent object representations from a succession visible fragments. We used fMRI to identify brain regions involved i

BACKGROUND: Both monkey neurophysiological and human EEG studies have shown that association cortices, as well as primary sensory cortical areas, play an essential role in sequential neural processes underlying cross-modal working memory.
OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to further examine causal and sequential roles of the primary sensory cortex and association cortex in cross-modal working memory.
METHODS: Individual MRI-based single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (spTMS) was applied to bilateral primary somatosensory cortices (SI) and the contralateral posterior parietal cortex
