Awareness about the significance of acid-base balance of saliva in maintaining oral health.

Saliva is a multilayered secretion. The quality of saliva is just as crucial as the quantity. Saliva is necessary for preserving the integrity of oral structures, personal connections, digestion, and acid-base balance. The acid-base balance in one's oral environment is always being challenged. It happens every time we eat a meal, and when microorganisms are present. At a pH of 5 or 5.5, the demineralization of the enamel and hard tooth structures occurs. This study aimed to raise awareness about the importance of acid-base balance of saliva in dental health. A self-structured questionnaire was

Establishment of perpendicular protrusion of type I collagen on TiO2 nanotube surface as a priming site of peri-implant connective fibers.

Natural teeth are supported by connective tissue collagen fibers that insert perpendicularly in the tooth cementum. Perpendicular insertion plays an important role in the maintenance of the junction between the oral epithelium and the periodontal connective tissue. Most titanium dental implant surfaces have no micro or macro structure to support perpendicularly oriented collagen attachment. Without this tight biologic seal to resist bacterial invasion and epithelial downgrowth, progressive bone loss in peri-implantitis is seen around dental implants. The purpose of this study was to establish

Action of nitric oxide on healthy and inflamed human dental pulp tissue.

Irreversible pulpitis has been associated with pain and an increase in the number of pulp inflammatory cells. Based on the action of nitric oxide (NO) elsewhere, NO may possibly participate in the sensory and autonomic innervation of the dental pulp, and may influence local inflammatory responses. The purpose of this study was to analyze normal and inflamed human dental pulp for the presence of NADPH-diaphorase (NADPH-d), as an index of NO system activity. Six non-carious second premolar pulp tissue samples were obtained from young patients who required extractions for orthodontic reasons and

Enamel fluoride uptake of a novel water-based fluoride varnish.

Aim of the in situ-study was to evaluate fluoride retention in sound and demineralised enamel after application of a novel water-based fluoride (0.12% F) varnish Mirafluorid (Hager and Werken, Germany) compared to the resin-based varnish (2.26% F) Duraphat (Colgate, USA). Each five enamel specimens were prepared from 60 bovine incisors. In 150 of these specimens, incipient lesions were produced with acidic hydroxyethylcellulose (pH 4.8; 72 h), 150 specimens were not demineralised. The samples were equally (n=100) allotted to three groups (A: Mirafluord, B: Duraphat, and C: control). Each 80 sp

A stereologic analysis of collagen phagocytosis by periodontal ligament fibroblasts during occlusal hypofunction in the rat.

Maxillary molars were extracted unilaterally from 4 young male rats so as to leave the agonist mandibular molars in hypofunction. The mandibular molars on the opposite side of the mouth acted as controls. Three days later, the animals were killed by perfusion and all mandibular molars removed en bloc. After demineralization, each block was trimmed, prepared for electron microscopy and embedded in Epon. The Epon blocks were trimmed so as to comprise the middle-third of the buccal periodontal ligament of the mesio-buccal root of the first molar together with some cementum and alveolar bone as la

Aerosol mitigation efficiency of high-volume suction systems during aerosol-generating dental procedures with patients.

Routine dental procedures can expose dental providers to aerosols associated with potential acute or chronic respiratory health effects. High-volume suction (HVS) systems can potentially mitigate aerosols generated during routine dental procedures; however, few studies to date have evaluated HVS systems' aerosol exposure mitigation efficiency during procedures with patients. This study reports the aerosol mitigation efficiency of 5 commercially available HVS systems [standard high-volume evacuation (HVE), 3 intraoral HVS systems (Systems A-C), and 1 modified HVE (System D)] when used during de
