Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy was carried out at 1.5 T on a patient with histologically proven Pott's spine affecting D11 vertebral body. In addition to the significantly reduced signals from the lipids in the region between 1 and 2 ppm, a prominent resonance at 5.1 ppm is seen. The spectrum is very different from that recorded on the one hand for a normal spine and, on the other, for a tumor arising from the vertebral body of a patient.

Long-term results of reconstructive osteoplastic operations on the vertebral column performed for tuberculous spondylitis in 116 children, aged from 1 year and 4 months to 6 years, are presented. All of them were practically cured, thus having a complete recovery of their vertebral column supporting function; in 65.5% of these patients, there was a reduction of a cyphotic deformity with age; 18.7% of the operated persons, including merely 13% of the disabled in their childhood, had resumed their work and 23% of the patients were taken off the dispensary record upon their recovery. Osteoplastic

A case of tuberculosis initially involving the vertebral arch is presented, and this rare mode of presentation is contrasted to more typical radiographic presentation of Pott disease. The role of CT in delineating the extent of disease and in detecting complications such as paravertebral abscesses and cord compression is illustrated specifically and through a literature review.

Retropharyngeal and prevertebral abscesses, although uncommon, present a perplexing diagnostic and therapeutic problem. In the adult, the disease is less common than in the child, but its etiology may be more diverse. Four cases of retropharyngeal or prevertebral abscesses in the adult are presented, resulting from (1) endotracheal intubation trauma, (2) esophageal perforation, (3) tuberculosis of the cervical spine, and (4) coccidioidomycosis. The pathophysiologic conditions and pertinent anatomy are discussed in relation to the medical and surgical approach to these lesions.

OBJECTIVE: To review our experience of anterior thoracoscopic decompression and reconstruction in the treatment of thoracolumbar vertebral fractures, tuberculosis and herniated disks, and to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of such procedures.
METHODS: Twelve patients who underwent thoracoscopic decompression and reconstruction of the spine since June 2003 have been reviewed retrospectively.
RESULTS: There were 8 male and 4 female patients, with a median age of 48.4 years (range 32 to 74 years) with thoracolumbar vertebral fractures (8 patients), tuberculosis (3 patients) and herni

Bilateral psoas abscesses are uncommon in Pott's disease. We describe a 28-year-old Nigerian woman with a 2-year history of constitutional symptoms and a 1-year history of bilateral paravertebral masses. She had received anti-tuberculosis (TB) treatment in an interrupted manner. A computed tomography (CT) scan revealed T10-T12 spondylitis, wedge collapse and extensive bilateral psoas abscesses. Histology of the abscess wall was definitively diagnosed as soft tissue TB, and special staining for acid-fast bacilli was positive. She was successfully treated with anti-TB therapy and ultrasound-guid
