Mpox Vaccine Acceptance Among Health Care Workers in Central Asia: The Role of COVID-19 Experience.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic may have shaped health care workers' (HCWs') perceptions of emerging infectious threats and willingness to adopt new vaccines. This study examined whether COVID-19-related experiences and psychological factors were associated with Mpox vaccine acceptance among HCWs in Central Asia. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 3,054 HCWs from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan completed an online survey between July and November 2022. Mpox vaccine acceptance was assessed using a single 5-point Likert-scale item and analyzed as a continuous outcome. Measures inc

Behavioural and social drivers of COVID-19 vaccination in Papua New Guinea: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Papua New Guinea (PNG) has one of the world's lowest COVID-19 vaccination rates, despite high awareness of the disease. Understanding the behavioural and social drivers of vaccine acceptance is essential for informing context-appropriate strategies to improve uptake. This study is the first in PNG to systematically apply the WHO Behavioural and Social Drivers (BeSD) framework to examine factors associated with COVID-19 vaccination status. METHODS: A cross-sectional, household-based survey was conducted between July 2023 and May 2024 in urban and rural areas of Eastern Highlands an

Mothers' intentions for adolescent sons' human papillomavirus vaccination in Japan: Psychosocial factors and relative influences across intention groups.

As human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination for men remains non-routine in Japan, this study aimed to explore psychosocial factors associated with mothers' intentions to vaccinate their adolescent sons, and compared the strength of these correlates across intention groups. A web-based cross-sectional survey targeted mothers with boys aged 11-16 years in Japan. Participants were classified by intention into accepting (strongly/relatively agree), undecided (unknown), and refusing (strongly/relatively disagree) groups. Binary logistic regression compared the accepting versus undecided groups and ac

Promotion over pixels: a mixed-methods analysis of vaccine communication strategies in Plateau State, Nigeria.

RATIONALE: The COVID-19 pandemic prompted the implementation of multiple public health strategies to encourage vaccine uptake. Among these, digital media campaigns, community outreach programmes and promotional efforts have been widely used. However, there remains limited understanding of their relative effectiveness in influencing vaccine acceptance, particularly within the Nigerian context. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the relationship between digital media campaigns, community outreach programmes and promotional efforts and their influence on COVID-19 vaccine acceptance in Plateau

Exploring longitudinal trends and multifactorial correlations of COVID-19 vaccination willingness among healthcare workers in China: a two-phase cross-sectional study before and after the 2023 phase of COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers' (HCWs') acceptance of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines constitutes a globally concerned issue, which exhibits variations across different countries and distinct phases of the pandemic. Specifically, the characteristics of HCWs' vaccine acceptance in China following the pre- and post-pandemic period in 2023 remain unclear. METHODS: We conducted a population-based two-phase cross-sectional study in Zhejiang, China. Phase 1 was implemented during the pre-pandemic period (July-September 2022), with the primary objective of investigating HCWs' willin

Emerging global patterns of COVID-19 vaccine information fatigue in 23 countries in 2023.

Vaccine information fatigue, exacerbated by the infodemic, misinformation, and cultural influences, hampers public responsiveness to the uptake of vaccines for COVID-19 and other vaccine-preventable diseases. This cross-sectional study of 23,000 respondents surveyed in 23 countries in October 2023 analyzed trust in information sources, perceptions of the pandemic's conclusion, and confidence in one's ability to discern false information from true and the association of these factors with willingness to pay attention to COVID-19 vaccine information, adjusting for sociodemographic characteristic

COVID-19 Information Sources and Vaccination Status Among Californian Adults by Generation Using the 2022 California Health Interview Survey: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: As communication technology advances and the digital divide grows, a deeper understanding of the influence of different information sources on vaccine uptake by generations can inform targeted public health interventions in times of future crisis. While the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the role of media sources on the decision to receive vaccines, no studies have focused on the impact of the type and number of information sources in a population-based sample in California. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we examined associations between Californians' self-reported most relied upon COVI

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a devastating neurodegenerative disorder due to a persistent mutated, wild-measles virus infection of the nervous system. While the acute infection is generally self-limiting, defective viral clearance can lead to the emergence of neurovirulent strains that undergo mutations within the host, evade immune surveillance, establishing chronic central nervous system (CNS) infection. It predominantly affects children and young adults although no age, including infants, is immune to SSPE. The characteristic neurological manifestations include progressive

Relative effectiveness of additive pain interventions during vaccination in infants.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine injections can cause acute pain and distress in infants, which can contribute to dissatisfaction with the vaccination experience and vaccine hesitancy. We sought to compare the effectiveness of additive pain interventions administered consistently during vaccine injections in the first year of life. METHODS: We conducted a multicentre, longitudinal, double-blind, add-on, randomized controlled trial. Healthy infants were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 levels of pain management for all vaccine injections at 2, 4, 6 and 12 months: (i) placebo control; (ii) parent-directed video

Unlocking the potentials of community health workers for effective control of mpox outbreaks in Africa.

Since May 2022, multiple countries have reported clusters of monkeypox (mpox) virus infections. In response to the current upsurge of mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and an increasing number of African countries, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox as a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security and a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on the 13th and 14th of August, 2024, respectively. Although community health workers (CHWs) were instrumental in controlling the 2014/2015 Ebola out

Respect for history: an important dimension of contemporary obstetrics and gynecology.

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." This maxim underscores the importance of historical awareness in medicine, particularly for obstetricians and gynecologists (ObGyns). ObGyns significantly impact societal health through their care for pregnant women, fetuses, and newborns, uniquely positioning them to advocate for health initiatives with lasting societal benefits. Despite its importance, the history of medicine is underrepresented in medical curricula, missing opportunities to foster critical thinking and ethical decision-making. In today's climate of threatened

Danish parents' vaccination readiness is associated with their children's officially registered vaccination history.

Previous research has shown that parents' vaccination readiness, as measured by the 7C vaccination readiness scale, helps to understand whether and why parents are (not) willing to vaccinate their children. However, there is a lack of research investigating the association between parents' vaccination readiness and their children's actual vaccine uptake. Addressing this gap, we examined how Danish parents' level of vaccination readiness is associated with their child's vaccination status combining survey with official registry data. Specifically, parents residing in Denmark (N = 2941, 64 % fem

The next frontier in advanced practice nursing: Infectious diseases nurse practitioner certification.

The increasing complexity of infectious diseases (ID) care, including antimicrobial stewardship, emerging pathogens, outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy, and expanding immunocompromised populations, has significantly broadened the role of nurse practitioners (NPs) in IDs practice. Concurrent challenges, including antimicrobial resistance, recurrent pandemics, evolving immunization guidelines, and vaccine hesitancy, further underscore the need for specialized expertise. This article proposes formal recognition of IDs as a NP subspecialty and outlines a framework for a postgraduate certi

Convalescent Plasma Therapy in Coronavirus Disease 2019: a Case Report and Suggestions to Overcome Obstacles.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is rapidly spreading around the world, causing much morbidity and mortality everywhere. However, effective treatments or vaccines are still not available. Although convalescent plasma (CP) therapy can be useful in the treatment of COVID-19, it has not been widely used in Korea because of the concerns about adverse effects and the difficulty in matching patients to donors. The use of ABO-incompatible plasma is not contraindicated in treatment, but can be hesitated due to the lack of experience of physicians. Here, we describe a 68-year old man with COVID-19 w

Identifying barriers to hepatitis B and delta screening, prevention, and linkage to care among people who use drugs in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

BACKGROUND: People who use drugs (PWUD) are at increased risk for blood-borne viruses, including hepatitis B (HBV) and delta (HDV). Despite the public health threats both viruses present, awareness remains low among at-risk communities and providers who serve them. This study assessed barriers to HBV and HDV prevention, diagnosis, and linkage to care, evaluated existing levels of knowledge, and identified educational needs and preferences among both PWUD and service providers. METHODS: For this mixed-methods study, data were collected through an anonymous online provider-focused survey, and i

Effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the pediatric infectious disease landscape.

This narrative review aims to present an overview of the COVID-19 pandemic's effects on the landscape of pediatric infectious diseases. While COVID-19 generally results in mild symptoms and a favorable prognosis in children, the pandemic brought forth significant consequences. These included persistent symptoms among infected children ("long COVID"), a profound transformation in healthcare utilization (notably through the widespread adoption of telemedicine), and the implementation of optimization strategies within healthcare settings. Furthermore, the pandemic resulted in alterations in the c

Safety of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines among persons 15- years and above in Ghana: A cohort event monitoring study.

INTRODUCTION: The development of COVID-19 vaccines during the pandemic occurred with an unprecedented speed, requiring extraordinary post-approval safety monitoring to facilitate ongoing evaluation of their benefit-risk profile. In Ghana, the Food and Drugs Authority granted emergency use authorization to six of these vaccines including the two mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, namely, Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. The objective of the study was to estimate the incidence of adverse events following immunization (AEFIs) and adverse events of special interest (AESIs) in persons vaccinated
