Formation and Transformation of Clathrate Hydrates under Interstellar Conditions.

ConspectusContinuing efforts by many research groups have led to the discovery of ∼240 species in the interstellar medium (ISM). Observatory- and laboratory-based astrochemical experiments have led to the discovery of these species, including several complex organic molecules (COMs). Interstellar molecular clouds, consisting of water-rich icy grains, have been recognized as the primordial sources of COMs even at extremely low temperatures (∼10 K). Therefore, it is paramount to understand the chemical processes of this region, which may contribute to the chemical evolution and formation of new

Microclimatic effects on activity patterns in a montane chimpanzee population.

Climatic variation can shape primate activity budgets by altering the energetic and thermoregulatory costs of feeding, resting, locomotion and social behaviour. However, little is known about how chimpanzees that inhabit cool, wet montane forests adjust their activity in response to fine-scale meteorological conditions. We examined the effects of temperature, absolute humidity (water vapour pressure (WVP)), wind speed and rainfall on eastern chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) in Nyungwe National Park, Rwanda, one of the highest-elevation chimpanzee habitats. From March 2024 to Februa

Self-directional liquid transport by anisotropic molecular diffusion in 3D nanostructured membranes.

HYPOTHESIS: Asymmetric micro- and nanostructured surfaces have enabled spontaneous directional liquid movement over limited distances, primarily driven by surface tension gradients. However, when structural features approach the nanometer or sub-nanometer scale-comparable to intermolecular spacing in fluid-molecular dynamics begin to dominate transport behavior, leading to a shift in underlying mechanisms. EXPERIMENTS: In this study, we fabricate oriented-shape nanofiber membranes via electrospinning, featuring fibers with uniformly oriented elliptical cross-sections that form a multilayered

Investigating high pathogenicity avian influenza virus incursions to remote islands: detection of H5N1 on Gough Island in the South Atlantic Ocean.

Understanding the mechanisms underlying the emergence and spread of high pathogenicity avian influenza virus (HPAIV) is critical for tracking its global dissemination, particularly via migratory seabirds, given their role in transmission over long distances. Scavenging seabirds, such as skuas, may act as both reservoirs and vectors, and have been linked to multiple outbreaks since 2021. Here, we report the detection of HPAIV H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b in three Tristan skua (Stercorarius antarcticus hamiltoni) carcasses on Gough Island in the central South Atlantic Ocean. To investigate potential incu

Three-dimensional reconstruction reveals distinct endodermal network topology associated with root ion transport characteristics in balsa.

The endodermis plays a critical role in root function by regulating the movement of water and nutrients. Because endodermal function emerges from coordinated interactions among neighboring cells, the three-dimensional (3D) organization of cellular networks may influence how transport pathways are spatially arranged within root tissues. However, the 3D cellular network topology of the endodermis and its potential functional significance in woody plants remain poorly understood. Here, we combined light-sheet fluorescence microscopy (LSFM), 3D reconstruction, and network topology analysis to comp

Proton Transfer Mechanisms in the MmpL3 Transporter of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Studied by Computer Simulations.

The mycobacterial membrane exporter MmpL3 transports trehalose monomycolates (TMM) from the cytosol to the outer membrane of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, making it a potential drug target. Proton influx is believed to drive TMM efflux, suggesting that disrupting proton transfer (PT) could be therapeutic. However, the PT mechanism and its relation to function remain unclear. Recent MmpL3 structures reveal a potential proton channel in its hydrophobic core, which also binds potential antituberculosis compounds. We investigated the PT process using hybrid quantum-mechanical/molecular-mechanical an

Optoretinography - Mechanisms and applications.

Optoretinography (ORG) refers to the optical imaging of light-evoked neural activity, specifically in the retina. The general protocol involves using an imaging instrument, such as a scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO) or optical coherence tomography (OCT), to monitor the retinal response evoked by a visual stimulus. Advances in imaging technology, such as adaptive optics, high-speed and parallel recordings, and phase-resolved detection with SLO and OCT, have together enabled the recording of stimulus-evoked retinal events across a range of spatiotemporal resolution, from individual to collect

Expanding the wildlife reservoir landscape: A high-throughput molecular surveillance study of zoonotic pathogens in Korean water deer.

The movement of wildlife across geographic boundaries increasingly drives the emergence and dissemination of transboundary zoonotic diseases. Here, we applied the TaqMan Array Card (TAC) platform for the first time in wildlife disease surveillance, enabling high-throughput screening of multiple pathogens in Korean water deer (Hydropotes inermis argyropus, KWD)-a species widely distributed and frequently interacting with humans and livestock. Between April and November 2023, we collected 192 spleen tissue samples from 12 regions. Pathogen screening was performed using the TAC system, with posit

Understanding zoonotic pathogens and risk factors from wildlife in Southeast Asia: a systematic literature review.

The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the significance of the human-animal interface in the emergence of zoonotic diseases, with wildlife serving as an important source of infection. A better understanding of the specific pathogens and mechanisms involved is vital to prepare against future outbreaks, especially in Southeast Asia, a hotspot for zoonotic diseases. This paper reviews the published literature on wildlife zoonoses in this region from 2012 to 2022. The results show a diverse range of potential zoonotic pathogens and the widespread occurrence of zoonotic diseases from wildlife. Driv

A novel postoperative delayed neurocognitive recovery model established based on preoperative rapid eye movement sleep deprivation in adult mice.

BACKGROUNDS: Postoperative delayed neurocognitive recovery (dNCR) usually occurs in older patients, however, the extremely high cost of older animals has hindered postoperative dNCR research to some extent. Preoperative sleep disturbance increases the risk of postoperative dNCR in patients. Therefore, this study aimed to construct a dNCR model in adult mice based on preoperative sleep disturbance. METHODS: A modified multiple platform method was used to induce rapid eye movement sleep deprivation (REM-SD), and the surgical model was established by laparotomy in 3-month-old C57BL/6 J mice. The

Injectable Dual-Crosslinked Poly(oligo(Ethylene Glycol) Methacrylate) Hydrogels Inspired by Mussel Adhesion for Cutaneous Wound Healing and Functional Tissue Regeneration.

Traditional dermal wound closure methods, such as sutures and staples, are invasive, causing soft tissue trauma, increasing the likelihood of inflammation and infections. Alternatively, while existing tissue adhesives can seal and adhere to wounds, they may cause immunogenic responses, tissue necrosis, restricted movement, and wound disruption upon removal, leading to secondary injuries and scarring. Herein, injectable poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) (POEGMA)-dopamine (DA) hydrogels co-crosslinked via hydrazone linkages and dopamine self-polymerization are fabricated tha

In Silico Investigation of Mineralocorticoid Receptor Antagonists: Insights into Binding Mechanisms and Structural Dynamics.

The mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) is a steroid hormone receptor that plays a key role in regulating sodium and water homeostasis and blood pressure. MR antagonists are a guideline recommended for therapy for the treatment of hypertension and cardiovascular disease but can cause hyperkalaemia. Modelling was performed for binding of the endogenous ligands aldosterone and cortisol and MR antagonist spironolactone to the ligand binding domain (LBD) of the MR. A molecular docking screen of compounds that were structurally similar to known antagonists was performed, leading to the identification o

Non-ketotic hyperglycaemia-induced hemichorea-hemiballism may represent glioma-like pattern on multimodal magnetic resonance imaging: can 1H spectroscopy help in the differentiation?

Non-ketotic hyperglycaemia (NKH)-induced hemichorea-hemiballismus (HC-HB) is an infrequent reversible condition observed in individuals with poorly controlled diabetes. In this report, we present a case of NKH-induced HC-HB exhibiting distinctive morphological and functional alterations on conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), and 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), followed by subsequent monitoring. A 70-year-old male with a 20-year history of diabetes presented with severe unilateral involuntary movement. Computer tomography revealed heightene

A Review of Epithelial Ion Transporters and Their Roles in Equine Infectious Colitis.

Equine colitis is a devastating disease with a high mortality rate. Infectious pathogens associated with colitis in the adult horse include Clostridioides difficile, Clostridium perfringens, Salmonella spp., Neorickettsia risticii/findlaynesis, and equine coronavirus. Antimicrobial-associated colitis can be associated with the presence of infectious pathogens. Colitis can also be due to non-infectious causes, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug administration, sand ingestion, and infiltrative bowel disease. Current treatments focus on symptomatic treatment (restoring fluid and elect

Cerebellar contributions to a brainwide network for flexible behavior in mice.

The cerebellum regulates nonmotor behavior, but the routes of influence are not well characterized. Here we report a necessary role for the posterior cerebellum in guiding a reversal learning task through a network of diencephalic and neocortical structures, and in flexibility of free behavior. After chemogenetic inhibition of lobule VI vermis or hemispheric crus I Purkinje cells, mice could learn a water Y-maze but were impaired in ability to reverse their initial choice. To map targets of perturbation, we imaged c-Fos activation in cleared whole brains using light-sheet microscopy. Reversal

Ascidian-Inspired Temperature-Switchable Hydrogels with Antioxidant Fullerenols for Protecting Radiation-Induced Oral Mucositis and Maintaining the Homeostasis of Oral Microbiota.

A key characteristic of radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) is oxidative stress mediated by the "reactive oxygen species (ROS) storm" generated from water radiolysis, resulting in severe pathological lesions, accompanied by a disturbance of oral microbiota. Therefore, a sprayable in situ hydrogel loaded with "free radical sponge" fullerenols (FOH) is developed as antioxidant agent for RIOM radioprotection. Inspired by marine organisms, 3,4,5-trihydroxyphenylalanine (TOPA) which is enriched in ascidians is grafted to clinically approved temperature-switchable Pluronic F127 to produce gallic
