Response-initiated imaging of operant behavior using a digital camera.

A miniature digital camera, QuickCam Pro 3000, intended for use with video e-mail, was modified so that snapshots were triggered by operant behavior emitted in a standard experimental chamber. With only minor modification, the manual shutter button on the camera was replaced with a simple switch closure via an I/O interface controlled by a PC computer. When the operant behavior activated the I/O switch, the camera took a snapshot of the subject's behavior at that moment. To illustrate the use of the camera, a simple experiment was designed to examine stereotypy and variability in topography of

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) decreases open-field spontaneous activity of Zucker rats.

The behavioral endpoint of open-field spontaneous activity was used to characterize further the central nervous system actions of dehydroepiandrosterone. DHEA, administered by intraperitoneal injection, causes a dose-dependent decrease in the spontaneous activity of lean and obese Zucker rats when exposed to a novel environment. The midpoint of DHEA's effect is around 50 mg/kg, a dose similar to that which reduces caloric intake of the rat by nearly 50%. d-Fenfluramine, a known anorectic agent, decreases spontaneous activity under the same conditions. Administration of either DHEA or d-fenflur

Angiotensin II receptor subtype antagonists can both stimulate and inhibit salt appetite in rats.

In urethane-anaesthetised male Wistar rats iontophoretic application of the angiotensin II (Ang II) type 1 (AT-1) receptor specific nonpeptide antagonist losartan in the septo-preoptic continuum can produce neuronal excitation of short- and long-term duration which has been interpreted as removal of tonic Ang II-induced inhibition. Mineralocorticoid pretreatment, which increases neuronal sensitivity to Ang II to enhance salt appetite, also removes this losartan-induced long-term excitation. These results suggested steroid modulation of the AT-1 receptor and a complex involvement of Ang II in s

Treatment in the Hypertension Prevention Trial. Hypertension Prevention Trial Research Group.

The Hypertension Prevention Trial (HPT) was a randomized, controlled, multicenter (four clinics, four resource centers) trial designed to test the feasibility of achieving and sustaining dietary changes in the intake of calories, sodium, and potassium and to assess the effect of those changes on blood pressure in a normotensive population. The trial involved 841 men and women (plus a test cohort of 78) who, at the first baseline (BL) examination were in the age range of 25-49 years and had diastolic blood pressure (DBP) greater than or equal to 76 but less than 100 mm Hg (average of two readin

Evidence for postsynaptic dopamine agonist effects of B-HT 920 in the presence of the dopamine D-1 agonist SKF 38393.

The ability of B-HT 920, a selective dopamine (DA) D-2 agonist, to stimulate postsynaptic DA receptors in brain was evaluated by assessing its ability to induce stereotypy and to increase locomotor activity in rats. When administered alone, B-HT 920 (0.03-3.0 mg/kg) did not induce stereotypy and produced only inhibition of locomotor activity, suggesting a lack of postsynaptic DA agonist actions. However, a different pattern of effects emerged when B-HT 920 was administered in combination with the selective DA D-1 agonist SKF 38393 (10 mg/kg): stereotypies (sniffing, licking, and gnawing) were

Synthesis and psychoanaleptic properties of new compounds structurally related to diphenhydramine.

A new series of benzhydryloxyalkylpiperazines carrying a trivalent function has been synthesized and studied for its effects on the central nervous system. Most of the compounds exhibit unexpected nonamphetaminic psychoanaleptic properties. The structure-activity studies revealed the importance of the nature and the position of the substituents on the phenyl rings. However, no significant correlation between atropinic or antihistaminic effects and psychoanaleptic properties was observed.

Behavioral deficits induced by bingelike exposure to alcohol in neonatal rats: importance of developmental timing and number of episodes.

The importance of the timing and number of episodes of bingelike alcohol exposure in neonatal rats on subsequent behavioral outcomes was evaluated with a parallel bar task and a spatial conditional alternation task. Different groups of Sprague-Dawley rat pups were exposed to alcohol delivered via artificial rearing procedures either on postnatal Days (PD) 4 and 5, on PD 8 and 9, or on both PD 4/5 and 8/9 (Combined), producing daily peak blood alcohol concentrations around 400 mg/dl. Controls included an artificially reared group and a normally reared group. Exposure during PD 4/5 produced sign

Inhibitory control mediates the effect of high intensity interval exercise on food choice.

Exercise is associated with changes in food consumption and cognitive function. The aim of this study was to examine the immediate effects of acute exercise on appetite, food choices, and cognitive processes, and the mediating role of cognitive functioning, namely inhibitory control, working memory, cognitive flexibility and decision making. We compared the effects of high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) to a resting condition on appetite and food choices, using visual analogue rating scales and a computerised portion selection task. Mediation analysis was performed with exercise/rest condi

Methyl Donor Deficiency during Gestation and Lactation in the Rat Affects the Expression of Neuropeptides and Related Receptors in the Hypothalamus.

The micronutrients vitamins B9 and B12 act as methyl donors in the one-carbon metabolism involved in transmethylation reactions which critically influence epigenetic mechanisms and gene expression. Both vitamins are essential for proper development, and their deficiency during pregnancy has been associated with a wide range of disorders, including persisting growth retardation. Energy homeostasis and feeding are centrally regulated by the hypothalamus which integrates peripheral signals and acts through several orexigenic and anorexigenic mediators. We studied this regulating system in a rat m

Functional connectivity for an "island of sparing" in autism spectrum disorder: an fMRI study of visual search.

Although autism is usually characterized with respect to sociocommunicative impairments, visual search is known as a domain of relative performance strength in this disorder. This study used functional MRI during visual search in children with autism spectrum disorder (n = 19; mean age = 13;10) and matched typically developing children (n = 19; mean age = 14;0). We selected regions of interest within two attentional networks known to play a crucial role in visual search processes, such as goal-directed selective attention, filtering of irrelevant distractors, and detection of behaviorally-rele

The interaction of amylin with other hormones in the control of eating.

Twenty years of research established amylin as an important control of energy homeostasis. Amylin controls nutrient and energy fluxes by reducing energy intake, by modulating nutrient utilization via an inhibition of postprandial glucagon secretion and by increasing energy disposal via a prevention of compensatory decreases of energy expenditure in weight reduced individuals. Like many other gastrointestinal hormones, amylin is secreted in response to meals and it reduces eating by promoting meal-ending satiation. Not surprisingly, amylin interacts with many of these hormones to control eating

Rats exhibit aldosterone-dependent sodium appetite during 24 h hindlimb unloading.

Hindlimb unloading (HU) is an animal model of microgravity and bed rest. In these studies, we examined the role of ingestive behaviours in regulating body fluid balance during 24 h HU. In the first experiment, all rats were given distilled water to drink while two groups were also given access to a sodium chloride solution (0.9% or 1.8%). Water and saline intakes were measured before, during and after 24 h of HU. Rats reduced water intake during 24 h HU in all conditions. During HU, rats increased their intakes of both saline solutions (0.9% NaCl (n= 11): control 7.8 +/- 3 ml; HU 18.2 +/- 4 ml

Obesity in schizophrenia: what can be done about it?

OBJECTIVE: To selectively review the literature on obesity in people with schizophrenia. CONCLUSIONS: Obesity is a common problem for people with schizophrenia, with an estimated 40-60% of this population being obese or overweight. Obesity among the mentally ill may contribute to adverse medical and psychological consequences as well as medication non-compliance and poorer quality and enjoyment of life. This review discusses the issues related to obesity in schizophrenia and the role of pharmacological and behavioural treatments in the reduction of obesity and maintenance of gains.

Relationship of gender and eating disorder symptoms to reported cravings for food: construct validation of state and trait craving questionnaires in Spanish.

Using confirmatory factor analysis, we cross-validated the factor structures of the Spanish versions of the State and Trait Food Cravings Questionnaires (FCQ-S and FCQ-T; ) in a sample of 304 Spanish college students. Controlling for eating disorder symptoms and food deprivation, scores on the FCQ-T were higher for women than for men, but no sex differences were observed on the FCQ-S. Eating disorder symptomatology was predictive of trait cravings, whereas food deprivation was predictive state cravings. Trait cravings, but not state cravings, were more strongly associated to symptoms of anorex

The relationship between reading beauty and fashion magazines and the use of pathogenic dieting methods among adolescent females.

This study examined the relationship between reading women's beauty and fashion magazines and the use of pathogenic dieting methods (laxatives, appetite suppressants/diet pills, skipping two meals a day, intentional vomiting, and restricting calories to 1,200 or less each day) among 502 high school females. Weak to moderate positive associations were found between reading frequency and each of these unhealthful practices except the use of laxatives. When controlling for anxiety about weight and frequency of regular exercise, however, the original bivariate relations between reading frequency a
